While we are in the subject I think Yoshiyuki Sadamoto deserves more recognition, he 1) Is a founding member of Gainax. 2) The original character designer for Eva 3) He's the one who decided Shinji was gonna be a man, since their previous works Gunbuster and Nadia had female leads. 4) He came up with the name for the show, originally it was gonna be called "Alcyon" in reference to Ideon. 5) He's the author for the NGE Manga, which is a great read as a standalone work or companion piece to the anime., there's even some recounts claiming the Manga was Sadamoto's pitch for Eva while the Anime was Anno's own version, so once one got approved for an Anime the other was turned into a Manga. 6) His Artwork is drop-dead georgeous, with it being a big part of NGE's popularity, just like with Haruhiko Mikimoto in Macross.

14 years old used to be the age where you were old enough to live on your own. My father who lived his teenage years during the 1960s certainly remembers when he was 14 he left school and started working as well going to a Trade School at night. Back then he would ride his bike to work and then to trade school and then back home in the dark with only the lights on the highway lamps on to help him see where he was going. That was certainly a really different time back then when you only continued going to school as a teenager if you were planning to go all the way to University to become a Doctor or Lawyer/Politician.

When people comment on how popular Rei is in Evangelion, it is mostly because of Rei 2. Rei 1 was killed when she was a kid and Rei 3 was absorbed into Adam during the 3rd Impact in the End of Evangelion film. Rei 2 is the girl who got close to Shinji and who sacrificed her life in order to save him after years blindly following the orders of Shinji's father. And for those moments when Rei interacted with Shinji leading up to the point when she discovered her own free will to sacrifice herself to save Shinji from the Angel in episode 21, that is something that strikes hard in the hearts of many fans who feel affection for Rei.

She's a very solid character. Soft-spoken, but strong. Quiet and mysterious, doesn't cause conflict and easy to work with. She had some drawbacks but still a great character.

I think there is also an instinctive desire to protect at work. Misato and Asuka are both outspoken and proactive in their own ways. Rei is not, and Shinji's first act upon seeing the injured Rei is to step into her place to protect her from further injury.

6:35 is it kind of weird to think that Asuka is getting so much attention now? She was popular too. But with her role in rebuild becoming more and more greater, her popularity sky rocketed as well. Thing is, asuka has always been a self motivating determined person to do what she wants. So when they needed an eva pilot to take all the big risk in the movie, asuka would go for it bc she knew it was a job that needed to be done for everyone. or something like that, i probably explained it wrong. its like how daryl from walking dead became popular not by choice but bc the script had him do x y z bc his character was the kind to commit to certain actions. and thus he became popular

@@pitysquid Honestly, I find Rei's silent, mysterious personality is what makes her an interesting character. She's not sexy but attractive in the sense that her mysterious background and constant re-learning make her curious of everything. Spoiler: in one episode, Shinji learned (to his and the audience's horror) that Rei is not 100% human but a genetically modified living being that his cruel father can replace. I don't know what episode it shows in but somewhere around the second half of the series, Shinji is shocked that Rei cannot remember anything and acts like they have met for the first time. A few episodes later, we see how twisted Gendo is when one scene shows the lab where Ritsuko is genetically copying Rei over and over. I think it's because Gendo has never really gotten over his wife's death and in a mild homage to Frankenstein, is trying to resurrect his wife.

When Eva was released on VHS by ADV films i was 13 going onto 14. Many older fans i interacted with on the internet criticized Shinji for being indecisive and a whiner. There i was around Shinji's age, with divorced parents where my father was away for 6-9 months a year thinking. "He's just a kid that wants to reconnect with his father, and all the adults around him are forcing the fate of the world uppn him."

I consider a kid somewhere between 5 to 10. When they are 11 onwards they may like shows the watched when they were younger but they also want to see something different as they mature into teenagers. For some people, a kid is someone who can be up to 17 years of age, yet I certainly don't think you can lump a 5 to 10 along with those between 13 to 17, they are completely different age groups and maturity levels.
