Interesting Traction elevator @ Civic Center BART Station San Francisco CA

(8-16-2014) This is a very interesting elevator. It has a single slide on one side and a center open 2 speed on the other.

The four stations in downtown SF each have 3 layers to them. The bottom is the Bart platform, next would be the Muni platform, and the top level is the street or bart entrance level. The elevator here has 2 sets of doors so that so you can transfer to Muni without having to go to the street level, and go back down a different elevator or stairs.

MU is Muni, a light rail. This station through embarcadero are pretty much the same. BART, MUNI, money, ground.

BART a/k/a Frisco Area Rapid Transit. Post 9-11,they closed all the bathrooms in the underground stations which helped intensify the elevators being used as urinals.

+Dante Trainmaster Imagine that there are thousands of homeless people and drug addicts, many of which are crazy. Now imagine what some of them might do inside those bathrooms, on a daily basis. That's why they closed them...of course they could have increased security and cleaned the bathrooms more often, but i guess closing them was cheaper/easier.

Dante Trainmaster The bathrooms were closed post 9/11 due to the worries of them being used for a terrorist attack. Plus they were absolutely disgusting, much in the same way the elevators now are. It's a lose-lose situation that unfortunately lead to the elevators being nearly unusable.

I used to live in the Bay Area, rode Bart often, the station elevators I've seen have been hydraulic, interesting this low rise four level is a traction machine. I wonder if it had been modernized with an MRL.

very sad that cleaning maintainance once in a while does' nt get out the mop and soapy bleach mix in a five gallon bucket. They could give the walls and floor a bath. As you previously mentioned parking garage elevators and lifts at transit places such as trains or multi level urban bus stations sadly some abuse.

That's definitely an interesting elevator! I know on there are scenic KONE Ecospace on all of Denver's light-rail stations and they're very slow also. I don't think they're as slow as this though.

It's a overhead traction not hydraulic elevator. The cab is still original, but fixtures were replace to Innovation as you see in this video.
