@MyRealName7 ай бұрын
@@peterdowney1492 I mean compared to airplanes, it's very slow. For moving cargo, it's limited to relatively light cargo. I struggle to find use for it, though it's would amazing as an airship that's good for luxury sightseeing trips and things like that. Unless I'm missing something, of course. Cheers!
@JohnHennessykerbute23 сағат бұрын
@MyRealName 130 km/h is over 3000km in 24hrs. That's actually quite a range in straight lines. London to say Budapest in a little over 11hrs. London to the southern tip of Africa in 3 days. Moving cargo over that distance right now uses a lot of shipping which takes weeks and quite a bit of carbon. The proposed 50 ton variant of this sounds like a game changer to me.

This aircraft has several issues. 1, it's enormous for 100passengers. 2, it's slow 3, it's a hi end indulgence 4, in long claimed journeys it's control authority and wind resistance is limited, potentially making it an immobile hazard to other aircraft in integrated airspace. 5, clearly not a viable solution to low cost air travel. 6, helium is finite rare gas. Advantages are the views are fabulous.

Basically, the company stated that they don't want to stack too many "new techs" at the same time. First, they do the airship, then, they propose an electrified version, and if there is enough progress on flexible photovoltaic cells, they will try to integrate them afterward. Actual solar panel aren't suited for this purpose.

Until solar cell and batteries become lighter, adding cells and batteries to power the ship would reduce the passenger load to 10 and make a 2 day trip into 10.

Put carbon-fiber in the structure to lighten, yet strengthen, the craft. Many of the "new" solar power generation systems would easily turn this into a 'cost per hour' miser. Very economical to operate. Initial cost would be a major consideration. Great to see this back in the news 🙂

From what I understand, they’re going for very specific niches. Examples: 1 delivering cargo to areas with rough terrain with no high-weight roads and no serviceable runway. I don’t know how much cargo a Cessna bush plane can carry for example, but I’m betting this tops that. 2 high-endurance loitering in search and rescue situations.

Wonder if the could cover the surface above it with thin layer flexible photovoltaics to increase the amount of time it could stay in the air since it has such a large surface area.
