This was a great tutorial. I love that you're low-key, non-OCD, and non-drama. You show us ways to fix the most common little mistakes and move on. You're walking us through the real life experience instead of just repeating the instructions. Thank you! Subbed.

I just discovered your channel. I am so glad I did. You are soft spoken and relaxed which is helpful to anyone needing a bit of help along the way. Also mainly is you do not spend time “selling things I can neither afford or really need. I know some designers are more expensive than others but one can work around that with helpful people like yourself. I am 75 so budget is most important. I agree, don’t sweat the small stuff. I am making things for my own pleasure and fortunately I do not know any quilt police.

Thank you for your honesty. I’m a beginner at a ripe age, but I’m trying. I bought both the Chicken Salad and Bee Vintage shapes and downloaded the PDF’s. The instructions are not very clear and confusing according to my limited knowledge. It would’ve been much better if they had a guide that tells you which shape numbers shapes every “figure” in each Bloch separately ( that’s just my opinion). Has anyone bothered to actually work out exactly which shape numbers shape the house/flower/cat etc individually? I’m new to your channel and you have a very laid back and easy way, I thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you

I’m getting caught up on my KZbin videos and I love watching you. It is refreshing to not have marketing ploys added into everything. I’m enjoying how you do the Bee Vintage block. I absolutely love Lori Holt quilts and have yet to start one. I thought this would be a good one to start and get my quilting muscles loosened up but unfortunately I’m healing from carpel tunnel surgery 😕I’m not doing to well with scissors and rotary cutter yet. I’ve been quilting a long time but life interrupted my sewing/quilting time for years. I have collected lots of projects but had no time to do them. I know I’m not alone on this journey. This is a great refresher quilt. I too have been frustrated with all the tools that are recommended for quilting now and thinking what do I need all that for? I started out with cardboard templates and a good pair of scissors 😂 thank you for saying you don’t have to buy all the square up rulers and glue and thread…I think you are my kind of quiltmaker😊

Thank you for showing how to use a background of all one color. Very helpful! I too have found an occasional mistake in a pattern. I just write in the correction and move on. I have found that I need to cut most pieces a bit larger than listed. Just works better for me. And I also some times make mistakes. I often buy a fat eighth bundle to go with a quilt kit. Gives me piece of mind. And now that I am acquiring a better stash of Lori Holt fabric I really don’t need to do that as much. I am a huge fan of her method, patterns and fabrics. I appreciate all your tips and enjoy your channel. Just found you recently. I do hand appliqué, and using her method is so much faster than needle turn or other appliqué methods.

I recently found your channel and enjoyed this video very much. I've never made a Lori quilt but I have a couple of her fabric fat quarter bundles. I'm more of a Civil War Reproduction fabric lover so I'm not quite sure what to do with her fabric. I like that you're honest about the directions for cutting and perhaps a shortage of fabric. I also like that you use less expensive interfacing, which I have a lot of myself. I get tired of watching videos that are mostly marketing ploys for their products so I'm not watching a lot of those KZbinr's/Flosstubers any more. I find her products very expensive because they have her name on them. I pick and choose more carefully. Besides, I'm 76 and don't need more "stuff" to waste my money on...haha. Great video. Will watch more episodes while I sew :)

Thanks for the kind words. I think everyone, no matter the age, should be fiscally responsible. There are a million and two tools that may makes things easier for one or two projects, but for me... I've become a lot more selective where I spend my money. I grandma taught me if you don't have something... "Improvise!" I take that to heart and apply it to be creative and use what I have rather than buy one more thing.

Such helpful tips! I love the one stitch on the dip of the inner curve for the flower and the exact measurements of your zigzag stitch! Also glad to know about the pellon interfacing, I ran out once, wasn't sure what to use and there's not much info online. They're way too busy at JoAnn's and some don't seem to know much about the different pellons. Your block turned out really nice, I want to try and make my flowers, centers and leaves a little puffier. I've tried sewing the batting with the interfacing and fabric but it's challenging and the piece doesn't turn out right it's way bulky. Thinking about putting a piece of batting under the piece, would you glue it on first or make it shorter than the leave? Would love some feedback.

I do think when you find a mistake with the cutting guide you should let either RBD or FQS, who ever wrote the pattern so they can write a correction for it. We are always told to look at the website for corrections right? I will be tryint trying the pelon you suggested, I am guessing it is less expensive right?

This was my first Lori applique quilt and I was too loosey goosey with my shapes. I have since traced copies onto cardstock just in case. I had to eyeball my P28 for the blocks that use it. I did post in a Lori Holt fb group for help with the measurements bc i lost that piece but apparently that's not allowed. So lesson learned...make copies immediately of any future shape sets that I buy! Thanks for sharing all of your tips

Thank you so much for making your videos! I’m learning to machine appliqué and really appreciate your tips. What sewing machine needles do you use for your appliqué projects?

Thanks! I should’ve also asked what type of thread you use for piecing and topstitching the appliqué (besides the invisible thread)? Cotton or all purpose or something else?
@lorabrinkman
@lorabrinkman 3 ай бұрын
I don't use invisible thread. I tend to use economical options... dual duty all purpose or seracor cotton... depends on the project.

Hi, Great videos and ideas! In one of your videos you linked the size of washers you used for your project (1 1/4 x 1/4”) but I was wondering what size magnets you use and if you could also link the site where you get them. Thank you so much! 😊
@lorabrinkman

I buy rare earth magnets from Amazon. I believe they are 1", but i think you could get smaller depending on the size of your project.

Something else I do to speed up the process is cut the slit in the interfacing BEFORE I sew the two pieces together. Taking time to carefully use the seam ripper to cut into the interfacing slows down the process. At least I think so. I wonder if anyone else does this? Thanks for the tip about changing the stitch length. I lower mine but I think I need to lower it even more to get those circles smoother on the edges. Great idea about adding a stitch at the cleavage.

Also, thanks for the interfacing suggestions. I make and sell project bags and sometimes I use Lori's applique designs on them. Buying by the bolt instead of her interfacing will certainly be easier on the pocket book

Hi Loa. I love your techniques for Hime Town quilt. I cannot find the instructions for the pieced blocks for the quilt. Do you know where I can find them. Thanks

Lori Holt did KZbin videos for all the pieced Hometown blocks. Check out her channel videos... It's part of her Sew Your Stash series. She actually did 14 blocks, even though the quilt only uses 10. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmaxkmacnZ17ntU

This was interesting. I have never done one of her applique quilts. First time I have seen this interfacing. Did you cut a home in back and turn? Thanks
@lorabrinkman
@lorabrinkman 11 ай бұрын
Yes. You cut a slit in the interfacing and turn it right side out. Then, I use a 2 point turner to smooth out the edges.

This was great, Lora! Did you mention if you used a specific color thread? Also I’m thinking the zig zag stitch caught both the appliqué piece and the background? How far in did you sink your needle down before starting you appliqué stitch? Sorry if mentioned these in your tutorial-I tried to listen carefully 😉

I match my top thread color and use white for the bobbin. I use the triangle on my foot and line it up on the edge of the piece, so the stitch is half on and off. The stitch width i use is very narrow and you really don't see much of it on the background. Thanks for watching!!

I haven't used this method for letters. I would probably stick to fusible or use Lori Holt's Spelling Bee book to piece the lettering. I suppose it could be done with a stencil type font.
