Interior Designer Ashley Whittaker on Making Fabric Look Like Wallpaper

Fabric, it can go anywhere! Designer extraordinaire Ashley Whittaker lends us her pro-tips for applying paperbacked fabrics. Whittaker recently took on a true labor of love, revamping her childhood bedroom at her mother’s home in Gulf Stream, FL. With a goal to bring the lush and tropical outdoors in, she opted for a favorite Schumacher pattern, Sea Grapes! While the pattern comes in both a wallpaper and a fabric, Whittaker wanted a matchy-matchy effect thus opting to paperback the fabric. By doing this, the transition from the charming roman shades to the walls is nearly seamless! What may seem like a tedious process, paperbacking fabric can be a painless design element that can elevate any space! I like the idea, but am concerned about the treatments you described that make the fabric stain and water proof. My understanding is that those chemicals are terrible for both us and the environment, and I would not want to be in a room with those off-gassing. Would love to hear a discussion about that.
