Not that I practise what I'm about to preach (I tend towards clutter), but I found the best way to get a real sense of how your home/a room looks, is to take a picture. We're so used to the objects we live with every day, that they become invisible to us. Take a picture of that room/corner/hall/alcove & suddenly you SEE all the stuff, and realize how cluttered it is. Use your camera, then remove, remove, remove.

A tip my mother taught me in organizing framed art for a gallery wall is to place them on the floor in front of the intended wall and organize them there first before hanging on the wall. Much easier than the mock cutout papers on the wall, and this way you can also see how well they will look next to each other.

This is absolutely true, thank you!! Regarding curved lines: I used to be a devoted DesignHome member for a long time and I closely watched how people voted for designs, trying to work out what makes a winning design. And I arrived at a mind-boggling discovery: designs with curved lines inevitably won over those with straight lines. They could be mismatched, colors could clash, décor choices could be downright ugly, but they still won on the strength of curved lines alone. People just liked organic curves much more than minimalist rectangular shapes. That was a huge eye opener for me.
@babakitty9311

I think we’re responding with our true nature when we prefer curved lines. There are no perfectly straight lines anywhere in nature! One of the best galleries I’ve ever been to was the Kunsthaus in Vienna. Designed by the artist Hundertwasser there’s not a single straight line or surface in the place even the the floor undulates!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree that a home should first and foremost be functional and fit our lifestyle. Once those needs are met, many people naturally want to improve their spaces further, and that’s where aesthetics becomes important. Humans are attracted to beauty, and creating a home that looks and feels beautiful doesn’t have to be shallow or ego-driven, it can feed our emotional wellbeing and make everyday life more enjoyable. I don’t believe everyone decorates to impress others or from a lack of confidence-many do it purely for themselves, to create a space they truly love. I definitely feel more happy when I’m in a nicely designed space😍✨(whatever the style or budget or location) Expensive-looking spaces often seem ‘nicer’ because of how they’re designed. This video is about breaking down those design principles-beyond the money-so anyone can apply them to their own home. I hope that helps explain my intent with this video, and I appreciate your perspective! 🙏

Thank you for saying that committing to painting or paneling the entire room is the way to go! I tried (very nicely) to explain to my mother-in-law that her living room’s accent wall isn’t exactly giving off the fancy vibe she was aiming for. I told her that fully embracing the color she chose would make the room look much more impressive to visitors, that it would look more 'deliberate' and 'confident'. Sadly, she didn’t take my advice, but at least she likes it. I mean, it's her home. ☺

There are some interesting and universal tips here but most of them will suit only a certain type of people. For example me. 😁 But for the majority of people these tips aren't going to make them feel at home. My friend for example LOVES glass tables. I HATE them. Not only because they are SO difficult to keep clean but also the "cold" look of them. My friend on the other hand doesn't mind wiping them every single day and loves that they don't block the view. So for her the material glass is very luxurious (which I totally get - it's just definitely nothing for me) but for me wood is very luxurious. Another friend of mine LOVES velvet and gold and all of those heavy, dark and opulent "luxurious" materials. Whereas I LOVE natural materials like cotton etc. And yet their homes do feel luxurious to me because they are. They fit their owners' vibes so perfectly. And I do feel comfortable in them. Just not homey. If you want to make a home feel luxurious for yourself and want to feel at home at the same time I suggest to find out first what type you are and what you like. Because if you follow all of these tips you will only make your home feel "luxurious" to some types of people but probably not for yourself (if you are a different type).

Just had built-ins crafted by a proper carpenter and lit with LEDs. Hardware was from Lusso. It cost around £10k as there are 2 opposing walls, and the final result was painted with farrow and ball eggshell. Although expensive, it has transformed the living space and increased the value of my home.
@evelynzlon9492
@evelynzlon9492 Ай бұрын
I just realized you can cheaply simulate the look of built-ins without looking like you were trying to obscure your lack of built-ins because you couldn't afford them. Paint your shelving/cabinetry in a shade roughly similar to your walls. Stencil your walls in the same color you painted the furniture. Then stencil the furniture the same color as the base color for the walls. That'll make the furniture seamlessly coordinate with the walls without matching exactly. (Matching exactly may look like a failed attempt to fool the eye into perceiving built-ins.)

Curved shapes are in recently, which makes us perceive interiors using them trendier and more high end. 10-15 years ago clean rectangular lines, sticking to simple scandi look would do the same job.
@teejay1650
@teejay1650 19 күн бұрын
Actually curved shapes have been in for a few years and are now on their way out. (See top designers updated in not) They are impractical, typically do not fit in most rooms, and don’t fit people’s needs. The pictures of curved vs straight in this video is silly as all the curved furniture is surrounded by high end accessories and well decorated. The pictures of the angled pieces are cheaper furniture, accessories, and poor decor. It’s not a fair comparison.
@headlesschicken99
@headlesschicken99 19 күн бұрын
@teejay1650 My point was that the narrative that curved equals high end interior look is not necessarily always correct. But in case these shapes are in AND obviously furniture looking well made. '80s granny oak table will not have the same impact as another one only coz they are both "organically" round...

I think the last point would be better called _poorly integrated_ accent walls since they are actually _often_ seen in luxury homes, hotels, and other beautiful spaces. In the hands of a good designer, judicious use of wallpaper or a textural wall treatment can balance other elements in a room without overwhelming it, similar to not overfilling shelves or crowding a room with furniture.
@evelynzlon9492
@evelynzlon9492 Ай бұрын
That's true. That's why she showed examples of classic "accent walls". It just looks like they decorated one wall and totally neglected the other ones. The same could be said for other large design elements such as panel wallpaper. There's nothing more annoying than seeing a $1000 Chinese silk wallpaper slapped on a wall without further accentuating it with the surrounding decor. It's a waste of the $1000 without spending an additional $10 to luxify the whole look.
@bellaluce7088
@bellaluce7088 Ай бұрын
@@evelynzlon9492 Yes, it's amazing what even a tiny amount of money/effort to integrate a dominant color or design element throughout a space can do! The accent walls she chose were like experiments in aggressively ignoring that basic design tip. Even the *gorgeous* accent wall at 13:05 😍 that _does_ have some colors and shapes echoed in the other elements in the space looks lopsided with everything crammed to one side. I would feel oppressed by that paper on every wall, but with some thoughtful balancing, it's scrumptious! I just hope people aren't DE-inspired by this video to follow their intuition about when an accent wall would improve a space, since that's what good design really requires, and what professional designers do! ❤
@evelynzlon9492
@evelynzlon9492 Ай бұрын
My idea of interior design is repeatedly scribbling "All work no play makes Jack a dull boy" on my walls in red lipstick. It's a budget-friendly alternative to conventional decor. But for most frugal home decorators, I might recommend splurging on one design element and cheaply integrating it into the space. In the Chinese wallpaper example, you could rag glaze the background walls to suggest the organic shapes featured in the wall panels. Like so.

What I took from this video is that in order to make your home look luxurious, you'll either Enormous amount of time and energy (Since you are not a professional, a very steep learning curve and numerous failures are pretty much guaranteed) DIY tones of things, or, you spend enormous amout of money to buy/hire people for those fancy stuff which you probably won't be able to afford anyway (Since you want it to "LOOK" luxurious). Since time is also money, then the conclusion is that, in order to make your home look luxurious, actually buy luxurious stuff.
