HGTV decorators aren't "real" decorators. They are mostly entertainers who tell little decorating stories. I enjoy them but it isn't really about the decorating. . Besides she wouldn't do a show unless they could film in London.

@@sososanchez3512 I usually use some kind of bed skirt, but most of mine don't cover the boxspring because they attach to the side board with velcro. I have used a fitted sheet for covering that area but I have also had box spring covers custom made and they turn out so pretty. I turn my bedding down pretty far and use bed chairs that sit against shams (sounds horrible but it is pretty) so turning back the bed exposes the box spring quite a bit. I like to use a fancy brocade like one would see on an old fashioned boxspring and it looks like my fancy box spring matches my bedding. I have thought about having the fabric upholstered directly on the boxspring instead because it can shift around a bit.

I despise duvets. I buy wool blankets and bedspreads that double as a blanket for extra warmth and add the quilts my grandmother made as well as a few I bought. I agree 100% with her about bedding, although I have recently switched from luxury cotton to bamboo and there is no going back.

@Kaththee

Absolutely! The bed is the most important and second is the bedroom itself, over the living room, dining room and kitchen etc. My beds and my bedrooms are my priority over every other room in the house. When we move to a new house I always put the bedrooms together first, starting with the beds. I am not unpacking dishes when my mattress is on the floor and my bed frame is leaning against a wall. I am not hanging up art, plugging in lamps, or in the living room I did the same thing for my children putting their beds together first, before moving on to other rooms. Seeing the bed put together, the bedside lamp on the nightstand and the rug they love and know on the floor would settle them. The bedroom is everything and it all starts with a dressed, well made comfortable bed.

White bedding is classic. She is just railing against all white bedding with the obligatory big white puffy duvet. The whole point of duvets was to use a down insert which few people do anymore for economic, ethical or allergic reasons. Now the only argument I hear for duvets is that the bed is easier to make without a top sheet. If you want a contemporary or modern look you can use a either duvet or blankets, bedspreads or coverlets. If you want a traditional look like Konig's you are going to need to go with traditional bedding which she argues is more cozy and comfortable. About two years ago I bought Pendleton heirloom wool blanket (the kind with the satin banding) and my husband and I never take it off the bed except to wash the sheets. We use all year long. In the Summer it is cool and in the Winter with the bedspread (cotton mateless reversible to matte silk damask) it is warm without being suffocating. I have since bought a wool blanket for every bed in our house. I also use my grandmothers quilts and a few I bought as well as bedspreads and coverlets. The only duvet in my house is on my granddaughters bed which has unicorns on it and I still use a top sheet because not using one seems wrong.

Why interesting content, beautiful and skilled visuals, well presented by Ms Konig and backed by irritating, inane, condescending? auditory assault. When every addition to the designed space is considered so carefully and skilfully, what exactly does this noise add to the experience? I would seriously like to know. I wonder if it is an unquestioned practice that now becomes the norm and we are asked to be unconscious about it as perhaps we are trained to be in so many other situations nowadays. Surely any Mastery is about conscious choices? This is so incongruous for me I have to abandon it half way through....

Omgosh. I almost cried when I saw the bedroom with the door opening to the side of the bed. I'm working with a room now that has to be configured that way and it bothered me to no end. When I saw how beautiful the room was in this video around 2:10, I exhaled and stopped bothering about my old mindset. I think what that says to me is that you can never watch too many videos or browse too many pictures, no matter how long you've been decorating. Eventually you'll come across a solution to a problem your stuck on. Also, the reason Konig's styling works, is the bedside table is round. I was thinking of the bedroom door opening to a boxy table with hard corners. Sounds simple now....

I know what you mean. I used to get caught up in things I thought were "rules" when they just were not. My bedroom like yours opens to the side of my 4 poster canopy bed (Maddox, Celerie Kremble) and it is beautiful. I even have a square night stand (Anna, Celerie Kemble) but it works. I like that is has long legs so I can see under the piece since the bed has a skirt and is so solid from floor to ceiling. I have a friend who is trying to make it as a "stager" but still gets hung up on the strangest things like she thinks are rules, like she can't put anything in front of a window, not a desk, or a bench much less a bed or sofa. Sometimes something belongs in front of a window. It is okay to partially block a window as well especially if it the bottom part of the window and you can still see the window view shining over the top of the bed or sofa. It is good to look at as many photos of good design as you can. Remember though, sometimes the photographers move things around to make the photo work.

@@michaelwoodbodley8099 She likes white sheets. She uses white sheets. Nothing beats white sheets, except maybe white towels. It is the all white bed that she rails against especially the white duvet on the white sheets with the white pillows that always look rumpled and boring. The whole point of the duvet was the down comforter and few people invest in down comforters for a number of reasons from allergies to expense to cruelty issues. Now they are marketed on making the bed easier to make which is true. If you want her traditional look and you too are sick of the look and feel of a duvet, she shows you an alternate way to make up the bed. If you are happy with your duvet then by all means keep it. The bed will be easier to make no doubt. I am with Konig though. I like bedspreads, blankets, and quilts on top of clean WHITE sheets.

I agree that a distinct memory of the comfort of your bed can be overriding after a visit with friends. I have always been appalled at the habit of the old, clapped out, master bed being relegated to the guest room. I have slept in beds that felt more like hammocks, laid on pillows like old sofa cushions, boiled under massive old winter duvets in summer and been given no alternatives. Quite honestly as good as dinner and the company may have been we have been reluctant to stay again.
