Also check which size spring you require as I believe there are 2 turn, 2.25 turn and 2.50 turn which will make a difference to the force required to open the door handle. And as mentioned above check the thickness of your original spring as these come in different thicknesses.

The reason your (circular) washer didnt fit back on, is down to the thickness of the spring. There are a couple of different sizes. The washer is there for a reason and should be put on, for anyone watching. Hope that helps.
