My concerns about interlocking bricks are that ants breed between the stones. This can happen less easily with mortar and plaster. How do you handle this problem?

We have not experienced issues with ants, as long as the bricks are of equal size and stacked on an even service it shouldn’t be a problem. However the way in which this risk is mitigated is by the process of brick pointing where mortar can be used to act as a barrier and then using a brick sealant which will provide an additional form of protection.

No mortar is used in between the courses of bricks. Concrete slurry is poured into the holes in the bricks when they are stacked, which then sets to give the strength. This can be reinforced with iron rods for additional strength.

@@enobricks9969: If it was me, I would be placing vertical reinforcing rods, that were tied into the foundations at 600 mm intervals. Then, horizontal reinforcing rods every 600 mm in height. There are valley bricks that are used for the horizontal reinforcing, and this is filled with cement. The idea is that you have a tubular fence design using concrete within the wall.
