The Intermatic Timer is the most common pool timer on the market. Here are some user guide tips and some troubleshooting for the most common problems you will have.
There are two voltage rated versions used on pool equipment. The most common is the 240 volt (208-277 volt) T104M, and 120 volt T101 Model. Most pool equipment is on a 240 volt breaker. Check your sub panel or main breaker panel to see if the timer is hooked up to a double breaker (240Volt) or a single breaker (120 volt). The timers are not interchangeable so if you need to replace yours, get the right volt/amp rating.
These timers seem to last forever. The first 3 pictured here are over 20 years old. I am surprised when one breaks down. A very well constructed product.
If you follow the tips and the timer is still not working, then you will need to swap out the Timer Mechanism. Refer to these two videos if you need to change out your non-working timer:

You can get a second set of "on" "off" trippers and run it on two different times. I have a few pools set up this way. I also add an extra "off" tripper sometimes so when I add chemicals in the morning I can run the pool for three hours if the timer is set to turn on later in the day. That way I don't leave it running all day. A little Pool Guy trick ;)

The Intermatic timer installed when my pool was new, lasted 20 years. The new one, installed two years ago, lasted one year. Replaced it last summer, and the newest one (purchased on Amazon) lasted less than a month. Each was the exact same model. This year, I'll replace it with something from Lowe's. At least they'll accept a return within 90 days.

I just replaced a set of trippers on a 37 year old timer this morning. I though about your comment so I compared the two trippers - green and the silver - I could see no difference but it must be microscopic. I know if the trippers are even slightly damaged the timer won't work correctly. This morning the customer said it wasn't turning off. The old "off" tripper was fractionally bent. The green tripper is a recent thing - maybe the last 3 years they have been included in the replacement bag.

When I order a set of trippers the bag comes with four of them in it; one green "on" tripper, one silver "on" & two "off" trippers. I just use the silver ones. There is a note in the bag specifying the green tripper as you commented but I haven't had any issues.

My timer motor stopped working so I had to take the cover off the timer motor to clean the debris from the gears due to ants that kept the gears from meshing. Simple to do, just little tabs that needs to be bent back. Under the big drive gear on the motor is a metal indexing tab that if put on the wrong side will make the timer motor run backwards, so make note when you carefully remove the gear cover. Been working great after a little cleaning and oiled.

Good tips. There's another video out there titled how to save 300 annually on your energy bill by changing the timer on and off to cause your pump to turn on and off 3 times a day and only run 3 hours a day. As a pool tech if you have seen the video please do NOT do that! Your pump needs to run 6-8 hours a day in the summer AND turning your pump motor on and off several times a day is not good for it. So what you save in electricity you will pay in motor repairs and chemicals to fight algae etc.

I use the wire algae brush all the time. It won't damage the plaster at all. I have never tried the Vitamin C myself so I can't comment on it. It can't hurt to try it. A Stain remover will not work in the case of a rust stain. They are only effective on small stains like fertilizer pellets or a staple that falls in the pool, and even then they are hit and miss at best.

I read that the Series 100 Timer uses the green ON tripper and the other series use the silver (IIRC). I understand if you have a 100 series timer and use the non-green tripper, the timer will start the pump.

Apparently some timers will not trip the pump on with the silver one and the green ones are just enough longer to make them work. the owner tried everything until getting the green one and then the pump would come on at the correct time.

We just replaced the mechanical timer in our box (after watching your video and it was super easy), however that did not solve our problem. The pump does not respond and turn off using the manual lever and changing it to the stop position. Is there some other component that could be bad and not allowing the manual switch to break the current? Right now we are having to operate the pump by using the circuit breaker. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi, i have the identical timer in the video. I would like to start my pool pump around 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and then turn it back on at 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The reason i would like to do that is because in Los Angeles we get charged a peak hours from 1 -5. However, when i added the new two pins and set it from 5 to 8. The pool pumps starts at 8:30 and turns off at 12:30. However, from 5-8 would not turn on. Can you shed some light on the issue. The pins are new.

Interesting. Maybe the on pin is defective in the new set. It happens sometimes. Try swapping the "On" pins and see what results you get. Just out of curiosity how many gallons of water is your pool and what size pump & filter do you have?

Not sure where to put this question. When I put my spa HEAT on using indoor control panel. I jump in, it heats up, it shuts off at 104 deg. BUT, when I leave the spa and go inside and look at the control panel, it's still RED, calling for heat ON even though it's up to temp. and shut off. It's supposed to turn GREEN when it's off/up to temp. Thoughts? Thanks!

Please help....anyone!!! My problem is that every now and then the timer will not kick on the pump. When I push the manual switch to the right, it will start. But when I let go of the switch it stops. If I push it to the right harder it works, but then if I let go again it stops. Then I switch it back and forth a few times pushing harder to the right and eventually it will hold. It will run fine, turning off and on for days then.....it does it again. Happened four or five times over the last month. Can't find an answer to this anywhere on the internet. Thanks.

The gears are wearing out in the timer & you will need a new one installed. If you decide to do it yourself know that if you accidently reverse one wire you can short out the brand new timer and burn out the breaker to. This may be a job for an electrician. Cost including the new timer should be $150 to $200. It is easy to do but that is my caution.

Maybe time for a new timer mechanism

My parents have the same timer on their pool and it's such a crappy design. The on/off switch doesn't work when the timer has moved into the "off" portion of the 24 hour cycle. For example, if your automatic timer is set to power the pool on at 8am and power it off at 4pm, you CANNOT turn the spa on manually at 9pm for an impromptu pool party. You have to readjust or hack the whole timing system instead. Laaaaame.

Could be the capacitor in it going bad. It is generally better to just replace the mechanism if it is really old.

For some reason, my timer turns on well before it gets to the "on"tripper, the " off" function works fine. For example, I have it set to turn on at 10 AM, and it turns on at 9 AM. The clock is set correctly. I have it set to turn off at 4, and that works fine. Any thoughts?? The clock pointer is not near the "on" tripper, so kind of weird.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thanks for the response. It's a fairly new mechanism, but I guess it could be defective somehow. Odd that it behave like that though, I guess I will adjust the clock setting by an hour to get it correct. Not a big deal, but I want it to run for 6 hours, rather than the 7 it runs by going on early. Thanks again!

It is easier just to replace the entire mechanism if that timer is running fast. Unusual for that to happen - sounds like the gears are slightly off on that one.

The gears in my timer are not turning, and the pump won't come on when I turn the switch on. No breakers are tripped in the main panel. I used a non-contact voltage tester and the wires are hot. The pump is a Century Centurion AO Smith 1.5hp. There is a little cover for the shaft on the back of the motor, and the shaft turns freely. Could it be a bad timer, or maybe a start capacitor? I hope I don't have to replace the motor.

Adam Savage Did you find out what your problem was. I have the same exact issue. I changed the capacitor and tested it so I know it's fine. There just seems to be no power going to the timer and the on/off manual lever will not turn the pump on just like you mentioned. No gears moving but the wires are hot. Let me know if you found a solution.

They used metal conduit under my driveway and garage and it corroded. The wires were shorting out on the conduit. I had to get an electrician to help me find the problem. I ended up digging a new trench around the driveway and garage and using pvc conduit. My pool is finally ready for the summer.

Adam Savage .....thanks for the response. So my breakers are good, my wires coming out of the wall to the timer/motor are hot but the timer itself seems to be dead. I disconnected the wires from the timer and tried to connect the hot wires from the breaker/wall to the motor pump circumventing the timer and still got no power to the pump. I'm thinking the wires between my timer and the pump are shorted out which could have killed my timer and it's motor as the timer doesn't work and the manual switch doesn't turn on the pump. Thoughts based on your experience. Going to have an electrician look at it but thought I'd see if that sounds familiar to what you were seeing.
@AdamCanFly
@AdamCanFly 9 жыл бұрын
That sounds a lot like what was going on with mine. I tried bypassing the timer and it still didn't work. Really though, if you use the manual switch on the timer it's doing the same thing. If you have a voltmeter, test to see if you are getting 110v from both wires. If I remember correctly, I was getting power at the timer because one leg of the 220v was working sometimes. Maybe it was jumping across at the short or something and I was only getting 110v to the pool. I'm not an electrician, so it was confusing to me. My pool equipment is about 250' away from my breaker box. Or I should say the wire run is about 250'. There are 2 junction boxes along the run. I didn't even know about one of them. When the electrician came, we found a junction box behind my garage. When he opened it we found melted wires and wire nuts inside. As we sat there messing with it, we could hear a buzzzz down inside the conduit. That told us that there was moisture down there and the wire was welding itself to the conduit. That's what the electrician said. So, now that we knew what the problem was, I had to dig a trench around the garage, and lay new wire with pvc conduit. Now I wish It was just a bad pump! If you are going to get an electrician, ask him how much he would charge by the hour to troubleshoot your pool equipment. It took us the entire morning to troubleshoot mine, and cost more than I expected. Hopefully It's just a loose wire or a bad breaker or something easy like that. Good luck, and let me know what it turns out to be.

Our timer appears to be working, the dials are turning, and it is making noise to that effect. What is odd is that the timer dial is moving backwards, and I cannot figure out why. Just a couple of days ago it was working perfectly, and all the parts are new as it has just been installed.

Sounds like a bypass switch is in the on position - look for a light switch around the equipment area or at the back porch. Turning that off should solve the problem. It could also be a bad timer but ck for a switch 1st.

@@SPL the two wires coming from the breaker are the same color. One is giving my voltage tester a green light while the other is not. I put one of the yellow wires into the second screw in the time clock and the second yellow wire going to the 4th screw in the time clock. My time clocks gears are not moving. Do you think there is an issue with the one yellow wire not showing up my voltage green light tester? It’s not a multi meter it just shows a green light when it detects a voltage.
