The only thing that really sticks out to me ( as an advanced rider) is the shoulders . Naturally, we want our eyes downhill so a common habit is pointing the chest downhill as well. This means we counter-rotate on the toe edge, and it slips out . Try taking that lead hand ( when you aren't filming) and keep it on the inner thigh. This will force your head to look over the shoulder heel side and into the toe side turns.

A little late to the party. I Like your videos. There’s a genuine and unpretentious vibe to them. As an advanced boarder of 20 years, learning how to properly carve is about first feeling when you are actually carving vs skidding. Once you understand that feeling it’s about proper body alignment, proper weight distribution to maintain and dig into the carve and lastly proper knee steering for control. I would say the progression is usually in that order. The better you are with each component the better you become with carving. And as far as learning switch, I wouldn’t worry about that unless you plan on hitting the terrain park and start doing spins, etc. and probably only learning switch after you’re able to carve properly in your normal stance. Good luck! Have fun.
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
Thank you! This is the most detailed explanation of the steps to carve Ive heard. Body alignment and weight distribution is still very new to me because sometimes I feel the sweet spot of where my weight should be, but most of the time I get it wrong and either fall or bail out and skid. Hopefully I can get it with more time in the mountain! Thank you again and enjoy your winter season!

Ok I gotchu. This is the best advice ever check it out. To carve the way you want, what’s holding you back is that right now you’re so focused on being on an edge you are forgetting to “RIDE” the edge. Try on a blue run to point your board down hill and lean like if you were on your toes or your heels. Try to do that the whole,e way down and watch how something in your brain connects. Once you are riding the edge and not forcing to speed check. You will get the carves you want

I fell countless times in many different sectors of a ski center and also just under the chairlift. The fact that I do this only for my self joy allows me to kind of forget that it might be people watching and laughing or whatever. I am also a beginner and find out that digging your sheens on your back foot will weep you into the turn and for the heel I try twist the front of the board by lifting my front toe while the back foot is still on the ball of my foot then dig my back foot calf into the high back. Always works for my toe side carves but my heel side carves are sometimes skidded
@neoc0310 ай бұрын
I've always expalined it as leaning into the front of your boots. That seems to click for people for some reason. That and if you feel like you aren't turning quickly enough put weight on your front foot. People who are having trouble initiating turns are almost always putting too little weight on their front foot. The other common mistake I see is people counter roatating or whipping their foot to complete a turn. This is useful in certain scenarios, but isn't how you should .
@EitayBicer10 ай бұрын
Bring your head and left shoulder forward when going on toe side. Your shoulder and head are pointing down the mountain while your nose is pointed against the fault line. A good way to practice this is put your arms and hands against your body and hips. That way you’re not using your arms to initiate turns.

Lots of good tips in the comments so I’ll just give you my two cents and my own feels for carving. When doing skidded turns I feel like my legs are doing a lot of work with my upper body doing counter rotation, overall a lot of energy is being used. When I’m carving, no matter how wide the turn or how steep the run, it feels like I’m using very little energy and the boards edge and edge radius is doing the actual turning. I’ve never surfed before but when I am carving on the snowboard it feels like what I imagine surfing feels like; knees slightly bent, and my shoulders (it looks as if my hands are pointing where I want to go) are just barely opening and closing but really it’s probably just a matter of transferring my weight from toe to heel and the pressure in my feet is equal whereas on skidded turns I feel more weight on my back foot. A good way to see what a proper carve feels like is to ride down a nice open green run and turning up hill by going from one side of the run to the other. If you do a skidded turn you won’t be able to go up hill at all but if you carve you will feel your board control where it’s headed and you’ll actually be able to go up hill. Once you experience that feeling you can then do more narrow turns (varying your turn width while carving is a skill in of itself). It’s also much easier to practice carving on a green run because you can be focused on technique without having to worry about your speed. But when you carve on steeper runs you can control your speed by doing wider turns. Good luck!

Crazy how your black diamonds are closer to green runs in California. How long have you been boarding? You seem to have the basics in sight. Squared shoulders, centered balance, and bent knees are the building blocks to all of it. What type of board do you ride? The shape and flex can have very different riding styles, whether you are a rocker, camber, flying V, early rise, etc... they all require you to engage your edges a little differently. Do you adjust your high back angle at all? Many park riders prefer zero high back angle, but if you are trying to progress all mountain, look into testing different angles. I use a slight angle on the front foot only, which helps with edge control. Everyone is different and relies on these aides more or less depending on riding style and discipline. All this and time, you need as much time on the mountain as possible.
@InTuned18211 ай бұрын
Thank you! and yea I've only been to mountains on the East Coast. But also the action camera makes everything look less steep. Before this season I've went 6 times. My snowboard is a flying V, +15 and -15 on the bindings. I have not adjusted my high back angle, when I bought it the guy at the store gave it a bit of an angle I forgot how much though. I might try out +15 and -9 soon though, I heard it helps with carving. But yea I think I just need more mountain time. Thanks again and enjoy your winter season!
@FlatbottomBomber11 ай бұрын
@InTuned182 No hate meant, just observation really, looks like a fun spot regardless. If you are at 15 and -15, try moving angle a bit to a 9 -9 or 6 -6 and rocking that for a few sessions to guage differences. Think of a finding a foot position that allows you to comfortably do a squat without straining the knees. Squats build center of balance, and the faster you go, the lower you want to get. The more controlled you can squat without falling to one side or another, the more improvements you will carry to the board and allow to tuck and book out at a moments notice. Sometimes, those older race stances can help, but if you are thinking of doing switch ever, it will make that a struggle. Also, too much of a forward stance will give you a control issue as more pressure is needed to engage your effective edges. Falling is part of learning, don't worry about who sees it. I've been snowboarding since 1998 and still fall, it happens.

Just be aware diamond at one mountain can be considered blue at another. I know the camera makes it look less steep but the fact he could smooth carve shows that’s considered easiest of the blue in the cascades. Our blue is steep as well but you can’t go fast because you carving through hard mounds and powder with dips mixed in just for blue, the second you carve you are slowing and even while slowing you are doing jumps you didn’t want to.
@zrob.10 ай бұрын
can confirm, i think im like low intermediate level and i hit a ton of blues at a basin, a lot of them were really challenging and probably would be considered blacks at this mountain. btw i checked fatmap and the blues at abay were steeper a lot of the time
@BradleyLindseyJr10 ай бұрын
@@zrob. I took a friend snowboarding several times teaching him. I normally run blue but do diamond sometimes. Because it’s so steep and so much snowfall natural moguls form from people carving in big powder so much. So I ended up whipping my friend’s butt thinking after two days of green he can try a blue and it was full on diamond in many places. They don’t groom much of our mountains because they can’t, over 3k feet and steep till the bottom with many runs between tree paths. Even I thought the blue was challenging when normally they are not for me. The diamond I went down that day was not much different just add more small drop offs

Just curious what board you're on. If it's a rental, and you told them you were a beginner, they probably put you on a board that isn't really good on harder runs. I've been snowboarding twice after skiing for years, so I caught on pretty quickly. I am linking turns like you and running blues confidently with ease. I quickly realized the rental board I was on was making it hard for me to progress. It was a Burton Radius which is more flat to rocker. No camber. It sucks at higher speed runs. I felt very squirly at higher speeds, and had trouble making hard carves because the board would lose the edge and I would slide.

I feel like in snowboarding injury is feared way too much. My first slope EVER was a black diamond in Breckenridge about 7 years ago. You are sure as hell I crashed and slid half way down the run, but genuinely throwing yourself into the mix and getting used to the higher slope stuff is the best way to learn. Having a hockey background helped me but in my experience if your athletic and have good edge control/balance.....skip the greens and blues. Low speeds are almost always the worst place to learn board control.
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
Now riding for a bit this season I understand what you mean. But in hindsight I was too scared back then to try it. But I'm glad you can crossover a lot of the athleticism of hockey to snowboarding. I don't think I'm that athletic. Enjoy your winter season man!

To Carve. Work on leaning forward more to initiate turns. find your edge and then lean into your back leg to initiate the carve, the power comes throw the back foot. It will feel like surfing when you have the carve going. pop up stay centered lean over front foot and repeat to the other side. You do not need to go very fast to carve, but you need to put power in your back leg to hold it. your roaring brook run almost looks like your carving when your on your heal side, your toe side your kicking the leg out to much and letting it wash.

Just subscribed. More weight on toe-side by leaning into boots more should relieve that skidding. Obviously skidding occurs when you do not have an edge well and truly in the snow! Skied last season after a break of over 20 years. At 50 had a dabble last season with snowboarding for the first time and picked it up in a couple of days. Surfing for years and skateboarding as a kid helped a lot. Those hits though if you go down! Stoked. About to head off for three weeks of skiing. Can bet the lure of snowboarding will suck me in again this year!!!! Life's short and goes by way too quickly. Enjoy it.

For most people it's the opposite - but as you say - it's personal. If I look at the rider in the video his toe turns suffer a bit from open hips so wouldn't recommend it to him. I would rather recommend him to try steer toe turns with the hip. Or push when carving.

set the max front lean angles on your bindings for easier carving. Watch Ryan Knapton vids to learn carves

Any tips on getting more comfortable on the toe edge? I’m working on getting it instead of riding the heel side and flipping for turns
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
It took me a while to get some comfort on my toe edge. I'm still working on it too but I improved my toe side by leaning into the front leg (60% front, 40%back), bending my knees, commit to the turn, turn your front shoulder to the direction of your toe edge. Turn perpendicular to the downhill because the reason it was hard for me to learn the toe edge is because I'm scared to pick up speed and wasn't too comfortable slowing on my toe edge. Hope this helps!

instead of forcing your heel or toe side gradually lean into that edge and use the bite of the edge to turn instead of the base of your board
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
Thank you! Ill keep that in mind the next run! I have to learn to be patient and wait for the bite.

im looking to buy a board and urs is dope wwhat type of board do u have, im ttrying to find a board thats good on the park and for carving
@InTuned1829 ай бұрын
I have the k2 manifest all mountain flying V profile. Although I think my board is good, I haven't rode enough variety to know what's good. The only complaint I have with my board is its more on the stiffer side so it very rigid. It does help me stabilize when I try to go fast. I would be more comfortable with a softer board for parks though.

I was scared of black diamonds until someone taught me proper technique and kept telling me it's just a steeper blue.
@michakwiatkowski37010 ай бұрын
My advice would be to try to keep your posture straight and keep your shoulders always parallel to your board. Try not to initiate your turns with your shoulders, rather wait for the board to turn at the same time as your body. Don’t force your turns. You can achieve that by just shifting your body weight either to the frontside or backside and just waiting until your board starts turning. Also rather than checking your speed at almost every turn try making a few turns without slowing down to feel getting the curve of your snowboard slicing almost through the snow and as soon as you feel that you’ve got too much speed you can stop completely and start again.
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
Ill try that next time! I think my problem is im a bit hunched up. I mean I still have a lot of problems but if I get the posture and shoulder right I can move on to the next step easier. Thank you and Enjoy your winter season!

How do you keep your snowboard from turning to the goofy stance also I subbed before 750 just for future purposes

Thank you man! And I keep most of my weight on my front foot so my board is biased on the regular stance.

You’re crushing it bro!! I’m a beginner myself, only been up to the mountain once & have been doing a lot of studying from riders like Malcolm Moore, that like to educate here on KZbin & you are definitely on your way man!! Can’t wait to see your riding a year from now! Great stuff & love the self analyzation aspect to this video! Also I could see your technique & turns getting better & better throughout the video as you got thru multiple different runs! Keep going!! Great content!
@InTuned1829 ай бұрын
Thanks man! Yea Malcolm Moore has the best method of teaching, he does it so differently than any other youtuber in a good way. But having reps in the mountain and being self critical is what helped me improve a lot. Thanks again and enjoy your winter season! Hope we both improve so we can enjoy more of the mountain!

@@InTuned182 absolutely agreed!! Love his ways of teaching as well! It’s really cool how he has multiple ways of teaching the same exact techniques. & yessirr!! Likewise! Can’t wait to get back up to the mountain to begin working on all the great techniques I’ve learned! Cheers man! Enjoy the rest of the season & let’s find some ways to keep our techniques sharp in the off season as well!! 💪🏾💪🏾

This is not to put you down, but I think an intermediate snowboarder is someone who knows how to really set an edge and carve hard. I would say you're on the more experienced side of beginner. I think you're on the cusp of intermediate though, keep it up!

How old are you?
@InTuned18211 ай бұрын
I started in 2014 but rarely went. I went only 6 times until late year. Green to blue was scary for me, specially the long blues and the change of steepness. It was the speed that scared me in the blues but the more you go the more comfortable you get. Enjoy the process man! I know I did even during the falls!
@elijahha.p8 ай бұрын
where is this ?
@sogtrot469210 ай бұрын
one thing I could recommend is to care less about the difficulty because some blues are harder then some blacks. also some areas on the sides are easier/harder than the run. your doing great and remember falling is good.
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yup I found that narrower blues with sharp turns are harder than wide black diamonds. And yea falling keeps you in check that you still need to learn haha.

KEEP THAT WEIGHT BACK WHEN GOING FAST...I'm big believer in it. gives you a bail out plan too....better to slide out if shit goes south
@InTuned18210 ай бұрын
Yea that what I tend to do on black diamond runs but when I'm at comfortable speed do front weighted to practice edge control.
@DrasticBreeeZy9 ай бұрын
Fix your shoulder position on your toe side. You are to open, keep your shoulders parallel with the board and you’ll be in a good body position for a strong carve and be in more control

I recommend not twisting your upper body as much on your toe side edge, twisting will create and weird angle where you're more prone to catching an edge and falling backwards. Try to focus on keeping your shoulder and board aligned to create a more smooth ride and less risk of falling.

Thank you, yea I just learned what knee steering is and I will try to do that more to keep my upper body more stacked and stable.

Although we you might be a little better than me what i can tell you is when you carve don't stop all the way like when you carve you are carving to much and it looks like you are losing a ton of speed and the only reason why you fell at first is because you carved to much keep the speed and little carves and you be be much better. Also take every run like a green or blue don't be scared confident is key
