I have seen this exact set up hauling a million pound vessel from Odessa,TX to somewhere in Colorado. It was truly mind boggling how big this heavy haul rig really is.

Steven, the reason for the extra trucks are what we call push or pull trks. the ones in the rear help push when taking off from a dead stop or help going up the hills. Same as the front truck. help pull. The driver of the main truck hooked to the trailer is the lead man. He says when he needs power or more braking assist. 1 miscue and drive shafts or rear ends can be tore up. plus other issues Hope that explains your question

Did anyone notice the big Peterbilt with double nutted front spoked wheels and hub reduction rears, like the old AP19 Autocar's, 850 Kenworth's, Hayes HDX & WHDX, Pacific P-12 & P16's & some heavy older Oshkosh trucks? Most likely for extra heavy hauls like this to keep all vehicles in sync they would have Allison's in them. It would be a tough job trying to shift each truck.

most often the trucks have different transmissions and rear end ratios so that no two trucks shift gears at the same time

Some companies trucks that move heavy stuff have automatic transmissions so they maintain that speed and torque also they communicate via cb radio

Can someone explain me why is that whenever I see a big huge trailer with massive load, there got to be atleast three truck behind or either in front of the trailer. What is the purpose of such trucks? What are they called and Why?

Steven Ethan Steven a load like this may weight 750,000 to 1,000,000 lbs. With such a load it requires that much power to keep it moving. And then when you come to a hill (up or down) that takes a lot of power. This is very taxing on even the best of equipment. Inter mountain Heavy Haul is as good as they come and buy only the best equipment from what I see but this kind of abuse is exponentially move difficult that your ordinary tractor trailer. You would call the front tractors and the rear pushers.

These types of loads are at least a year in advance to plan. It would be a gross amount, not hourly.

It them 2 days from east of Columbus NM to near Santa Teresa NM about. I saw it got through Columbus early one day and the next day we went to El Paso and came across it about 14 miles east of town, and then that evening coming back it was parked near the Border Patrol before the Pete Dominici Highway. About 38 miles in a day. And there is nothing, I mean nothing between Columbus and Santa Teresa.

One just went through my town and they had one less pull truck, and it was 1.35mil gross weight

it can only be 544,000 lbs on the trailer, max... (16 x 34,000 lbs), based on the maximum allowance of 34,000 lbs on a "Tandem Set" The trucks will have a maximum weight of 46,000 each, with the tag-axles lifted, with the tag-axles on the road, I believe another 14,000 lbs can be added... You do the math...
