Excellent video! Excellent! It's such a shame that the battery was not the problem here though. I can't tell you how many times I've laid in bed and mentally dissected some non-working form of electronic technology and convinced myself that I just somehow figured out the one thing that needs to be done, the ONE thing, that will effectively and magically fix the item and get it back to working 100% again. And then in the morning, even before getting my first cup of coffee, I try my hard earned sleep depriving idea, only to find out it didn't fix it. Lol. That sucks. So, when I can hear in your incredibly awesome narrative voice, the frustration (in a good way) of finding out that your repair did not fix it, I totally relate. Totally. This video will definitely help others though, because there are those times when the battery is the problem. And now for those times there is in fact an "official" battery replacement tutorial for the 60D. Great job! It's been a long time coming for someone to make one.

Thank you for watching and for all the help you've offered. Definitely relate to what you said. I think a lot my frustration is also from the fact that I don't possess the skill or knowledge to fix it. I wish I knew more and had better equipment. I don't know when I'll have part 2 done, but in that I dissect it more and probe some of the power lines you mentioned. The one big strange thing was the one circuit that is supposed to be at 0Vdc until you spin the shutter dial. It was always at 4.75 Vdc. I suppose if I really put time, effort and research into it, I could figure it out, but alas I am not like some kind of bored retired person haha. I have a job and other responsibilities to attend to. So, off the camera goes back to its owner and hopefully into the hands of a much more professional engineer. Can't thank you enough, Robert, and I'll let you know when Part 2 goes up. Hopefully in a month or so.

I had major water damage on my 5d mark iv. After taking apart to dry/clean I lost a couple housing screws. Any ideas on where I can get an assortment of screws?
@DiCasaFilm
@DiCasaFilm Жыл бұрын
Oof. Damn. that’s a tough one. You could try buying a broken camera to harvest parts, but thats probably the most expensive route. It’s tough to do, but you could google and try to find a “parts list” for the mark iv and see if you can find the part number for the screws and order them from Canon. The parts list may also give the dimensions of the screw (really it’s a bolt, not a screw). You’d need to know the Length of it, the Diameter of the shaft, and the “Pitch” of the threads. “Pitch” just means thread count. If it’s Imperial it would be something like “24 threads per inch or just “24”. If it’s metric, it would be threads per millimeter, so it would say “1.0” or “.85” or something like that. If you can find those dimensions, you could try and just order a bolt with those dimensions from a third party site. You could also try calling Canon’s customer service; they could potentially be a good help. Good luck!

To anyone watching this video, either to replace the clock battery or to do an astrophotography mod, you don't need to remove any of the front screws and you can partially remove (peel back) the grip material just enough to access the screws. This will save a lot of time and greatly reduce the possibility of ruining the camera. You also don't need to remove the two screws on the display hinge or the diopter adjustment wheel.
@MikeHammer1
@MikeHammer1 9 ай бұрын
Another note: the battery in this camera and probably every DSLR on the market is specifically designed to be rechargeable. DO NOT USE anything other than an OEM type battery. A non-rechargeable battery will leak if charged and potentially ruin you main board.
@MikeHammer1
@MikeHammer1 9 ай бұрын
Another thing, the clock battery is not capable of powering up the camera, it only keeps the time, date and possibly some of the settings current. The big battery is the only thing that can actually power the camera and it is what keeps the clock battery charged.

I have a 60D and a T3 that don't start, even with the battery fully charged and been passed all the voodoo resets and mystery buttons combinations 😅 I think it's only a Canon thing, up to the 50D there was more quality. From the 60D they cut costs much more in the entry level range, the only APSC that works without concerns is the 7D, and all the full frame models. The entry and mid level APSC ones all have some faults in the internals that die with enough time

23:28 be careful using a metal screwdriver as a pry tool in a camera. There are some nice capacitors in there with a great voltage waiting for you to touch them
@DiCasaFilm
@DiCasaFilm 3 жыл бұрын
Very true! Great point. I am still a novice and also didn’t have a small enough plastic pry. And i was also aware where the flash capacitor was located, so I avoided it. And the camera had been dead for over a year, so where as they still could have held a charge, it was unlikely. But you are absolutely right.
@NickzAndMikz
@NickzAndMikz 3 жыл бұрын
@@DiCasaFilm That's true, but I think capacitors tend to hold on to charges for really long periods of time. I know in computer PSUs that the capacitors can remain charged for even up to 5 years after being unplugged.
