Great video little brother. I just bought one of these and the gears are not labeled and with 3 of the 8 firing your video saved me a headache.

Dude, it has a 2-speed rear axle, controlled by the red knob on the shifter. You were driving in high range. You need all the gears when pulling in those old trucks. That's why they came with these 10-speed combos: a 5-speed transmission times a two-speed rear axle. Unlike high/low in a truck, these work together. There are even three speed axles! It's something like this: 1. Start in 1st and LOW (button down). When it's time to shift, instead of shifting it normally, you pull the knob to set the rear axle to high when you.re ready. 2. Now, press the clutch in like you're going to shift, but DON'T ACTUALLY SHIFT IT, you just break the torque and the rear axle will shift on it's own. 3. Now you're in 1st and HIGH. You reverse and go the other way, when going from 1ST and HIGH to 2nd and low. There's some good videos here on it, also look for split shifting. Note that there are some different patterns too. That sticker on the glovebox tells you the pattern to use. I think there were several spots you could have used those extra gears. They are fun to drive though!

I didint see any double clutching going up in gears. Also something i learned if you dont know it yet. The loadstar operates like a semi, to down shift you have to push in the clutch put it in neutral then let off the clutch and rev it to about 2400 rpms. then you can succesfully put it in a lower gear without grinding. By the way double clutching i find with my semi and the loadstar i own makes it easier on slipping it into gears. Then again mine may be a might worked with then yours. I want to take off the grain bed and find one of the orginal pickup beds they made for some loadstars. Take off the weight distribution axel entirely and of course slide the drive axel further forward then switch out the front axel for something 4wd. Dont know how im gunna do it all yet turning a grain hauler with low gear distribution to a offroad king that can hit 70 without whineing like a lawnmower had sex with a chainsaw and ate the baby. But i know im gunna have to cut off the frame by half or so.

This is a synchromesh transmission, except for 1st gear and reverse. As opposed to a Fuller/Eaton/Spicer where there aren't any syncros and the driver has to match everything up. There's no point in double-clutching; the syncros do the work for you.

Hey man, thanks for the video. What is your axle gear ratio and top speed? I have a 1700 4x4 with 7.17 and drove it a few short times. But it had been converted to single with smaller tires. So I restored the dually with proper size tires 9.00x20 but im waiting on a brake part i found broken and can't drive yet. Plus i never took off passenger side hub, but i found an IH hub so im hoping that with that unlocked and taller tires, it won't shake apart at 40mph. So as its been sitting, i removed the Chevy bed and im building a wooden flatbed for the winter to haul coal, then in the spring ill finish it into a extreme off road camper i hope but not if i can't go over 45 obviously . Thanks

Dustin Pollard well idk what the speed is bc the speedo doesn’t work lol 😆 not sure either on the gear ratio I’d have to look bud! Sounds like a good project!

You need to split them all out, try shifting 5and4, but you did good need a lot more hp.

Charles Watson I would love to do a engine swap on it and drop a Cummins in it lol 😂 the truck runs and drives but it’s old and wore out!! Thanks for watching!!

@@Excavating320 im pretty sure its a 1700 it just say s on the side because its that worn out but it has a longer chassis than the 1600 or 1900 so I asumed it was a 1700

Where would reverse happen to be?
@dustinpollard62373 жыл бұрын
On the IH T35 5 speed, reverse is all the way left (toward the driver) and to the rear. Reverse and 1st gear are non synchronous, that's why he had to be so careful and still grinding the gears, have to be at a full stop like an old tractor. But 2 through 5 are the road gears and you can shift while moving. I mean, a pro can start in first and hit second with some experience and skill, but its not really meant to be. you can pull out in 4th gear lol so starting out in 2nd isn't bad even loaded.
@mentlegen81873 жыл бұрын
Okay great information I have an old IH dump model and was wondering where reverse would be because the model number and vin number are ruined. Thank you!
