This is from a few weeks ago. Trying to start the truck in some very cold weather so I can go get some sand salt. It had been down to -30 the night before. I finally got it going when I hooked up the battery charger.

I drive a bus with a DT 466 and I have found the best way to cold start is to cycle the pre-heaters four or five times before cranking the engine. She always goes.

I drive a Thomas school bus with a DT530 out in colorado. 2 cycles down to 0 degrees and 4 cycles does it down to -20 degrees. Always fun to laugh ad the drivers with the new cummins jobs that won’t start when they don’t plug em in 😂

put a hot plate 1"below the oil pan ,and put a trickle charger on a battery .plug them in 1 hr before starting and it will start .the warm oil will allow the motor to spin over faster .

I used to drive an International concrete mixer,powered by a mechanical DT-530,300hp. Never had any issues cold starting that thing. That old truck would be loaded and on the way to a job, while the other drivers were trying to start those new gee-whiz,electronic M-11's.

You need to have 12-14 volts if you wish to start a massive vehicle such as this one.

Nope. 12.6 is fully charged. After a 30 second cycle of the grid box at 200 amps or so, you’re lucky to have 11.5 volts

I drive an '87 and a '97 International with the DT 466 and 466E respectively. NEITHER has a block heater and NEITHER have glow plugs. Both start not bad in the cold but the older one bucks, chucks burps and farts while trying to warm up. only once in very cold weather did it fail to start.

Alright it took some effort but you finally got her to fire up
@abyssunderground
@abyssunderground 9 жыл бұрын
When she started to fire on the 2nd to last attempt before the battery died, if you had kept cranking she probably would have started. Getting heat into the cylinders is the key to starting a diesel this cold. At that point she was making heat, you just had to keep going. As soon as you stop the heat stops too. Don't be afraid to use a little throttle too. Once the engine is at a certain RPM the throttle control is given to the driver rather than being held back so that can force a bit more fuel in to give it that final kick into starting. If she's lumpy at idle hold the throttle open to give her a bit more revs (200rpm more than idle) and it'll smooth out in no time. Bring back the indirect injection engines without the electronic crap, they'd start in anything with a good set of glow plugs! =)

Little trick i use to start our transit truck which has no heater is to get an old peice of flexy hose from an old hoover stick it on the exaust of the tractor or car and shove it under the bonnet. Few min of that and shes away.

***** Mr. Butler, I am realy amazed. -18 C 4 attempts 15+20+35+40 sec. in 5min 40sec. Just see the Voltmeter, preheat at 10.5V Start engine at 11.5V and when cranking the voltmeter go to about 10V and below. Isn't it amazing? How many batteries have this truck, what brand are they, what is the total in amperes,what is the total starting current, how old is the starter and what brand is it? All these matter?! P.S. Driver in Canada since 2004, total expirience 26y. Best Regards!

only use ether once the wait to start is out and starts to crank over, she will back fire ether out the air cleaner if not careful. the wait to start is a air/grid heater in the air intake manifold. sometimes they fail, and super hard to start..the 466 is a HEUI engine hydralically actuated unit injector.basically oil pressure driven injectors.needs a volume of oil to activate injectors.which also makes it hard to start. basic help is heat, and always is heat for any diesel in cold temps.
@MrMan5014
@MrMan5014 Жыл бұрын
There is a good possibility the oil rack in the head is leaking oil and the high pressure oil pump is having trouble building pressure to fire the injectors…in any case if my truck was hard starting like that I would be plugging it in even for just a half hour..be better than cranking the crap out of it!..

i work for internation , the 466's we hard starts any colder then -15, even worse in -40c if we had a no start when cold block heater and tiger torch on the oil pan until the oil was warm, international called for 15w40 all year long..warranty would be void if it wasnt 15w40.other then ether is about the only way to keep it turning over until enough heat is produced to take over. if she doesnt start on the first go at it stop and heat her up, she will go after about 10 min of a tiger torch.

left up, right down...on your cruse control buttons...push and hold left up and push and hold right down at the same time...this will give you an ERROR reading. Let it run a system check then turn your left turn signal on and push both buttons up at same time and hold. This should help clear out ERRORs. Keep key in on position and park brake on.

@BobcatNinja2124 I would point out that you should have hooked the battery charger up first... that comes from 8 years of living in Alaska... once you hit -20℉ you just kinda assume the battery is going to be killed by cranking :-p heck I used a booster even after leaving the block heater going all night (I know you don't have the block heater), it just helps prolong the life of your expensive equipment :-)

Got a DT360 now? Same engine family, both great but the 466 is a hella lot bigger dimension wise. If you do have the 360 turn it up some and make 466 power with a lot less weight, work & $$$. Just don't go nuts on the boost or wrap it too tight. All post 2003 DT's are smogged into oblivion and don't live near as long, I'd avoid them.

Just to state something it doesn't have glowplugs. A DT466 has never had plugs far as what I was told. I was told older engines like that started with compression and newer ones like this have a intake/grid heater. You will see also he did have a wait to start light on the first time before he tried which was the intake/grid heater.
