Theres 2 top covers. One over the hi,lo & rev section & one over the 1234 section. Under those covers there are rollers that run in slotted grooves. When the rollers break it wont shift properly. Not a big deal to remove the cover & check it. That was usually the only transmission problems they had when i worked at IH. The rest of the trans is bulletproof other than the TA which was usually damaged by operator error

66 and 86 series Internationals were some of the best farm equipment back in the day and still today. Biggest problem is shift linkage having issues. Its much easier to fix on 66 series with a simple rebuild kit, 86 series get a little more complicated. Not to mention the T/As were known to fail and have issues. If you can figure out the transmission that tractor will run a lot longer. My main workhorse 1066 has almost 13k hours on it and no rebuild any time recently if at all and runs like an absolute top. Those red machines last forever

All the tractors from that era were great tractors. We run deere stuff and have a 4240 with 24000 hours on it. Never been split or anything. Just injectors and injection pump done at 12000 hrs. It is getting a little tired now but still good old tractor! They dont make em like they used too!

@@redneckryan615 100% colour doesnt matter. Maintenance does wonders. After tons of hours you can expect it to get tired but ive heard of people needing to rebuild engines at 10000k hrs change oil and it will run for a long time. Our 4240 is getting a inframe kit and split for a trans rebuild but at 24000hrs you cant be mad. And the guy who owned it before us (we bought it at 7000 hrs) did not treat it too well. But it got everything it ever needed now that we own it. There isnt an aftermarket part on the tractor and we are gonna keep it that way haha. OEM parts are worth it imo even if it does mean its more money.

@youngtodd459011 ай бұрын
That is a very common issue for those tractors it is hung in one gear. The easiest way to solve. It is to figure out which gear it is hung in and put the lever back in that gear. Once it’s back in that gear, pull on it with the truck just enough to take the pressure off of the driveline and then put it into park. It happens if you try to pull it out of gear without the clutch all the way to the floor and there is still a load on the driveline.

I’ve taken a short rod and used a hammer to knock that linkage back into neutral from floorboard above the starter no need to take the seat off. The lever to left of the steering wheel is your torque amplifier(TA). It has a high and a low. They were known for going out.

The 1086 was the biggest selling tractor of the 86 series line with 131 Pto HP. The 1086 was introduced in September 1976 replacing the 1066. In very late 1980 and all of the 1981 models the 1086 received a new hydraulic pump system, pistol grip shifter levers, western interior option, and they also painted the side panels Red and added a stripe decal, these are known as the Tri-stripe models. The 5088 Replaced the 1086 in late 1981. IH was bought by Tenneco in 1984 then merged with Case to form Case International in 1985. The 1086 in the video apears to be an early model based on the early style cab steps "probaly a 76 or 77 " also appears to have the early style optional digital dash the later ones had push buttons instead of a dial. The lever On the left hand side of dash that wiley was asking about is the Torque amplifier (TA) which are common for failing if not properly used, the lever is In the High position (direct drive) in the video and has to be for pull starting

Many years ago, my dad's 986 got stuck in Hi range when I shifted into neutral. I turn the tractor off then put it in park; So it would not roll. So, I could get under the cab from the side of the tractor and use a bar to manually shifty the linkage out of HI range into neutral. I drove the rest of the way home in low range. I cannot from memory tell you what it was under the cab I moved, i found it by moving the shifter, if I recall correctly. But it worked and moved the HI\Low range back into neutral. This was many years ago before cell phone. As for the clutch it should work when the tractor is off. My dad’s 986 and 1086 tractors were new from the factory and they both have a hydraulic clutch booster, but still works when the tractor is off. It just takes a lot to depress the clutch. There is a safety switch that keeps the motor from turning over when the clutch is not depressed. If I recall correctly that safety switch is on the outside of the cab under the hood somewhere. As for that stuck handle on the dash you was asking about it is to shift the TA, Torque Amplifier. But I have seen the handle get rusted in place just outside the cab under the hood, when the tractor sits too long. A lot of work to fix on my dad’s 986.

@RedIron106611 ай бұрын
Not quite sure how you managed to pull start it, unless the T/A has been eliminated at some point. If you have it running, see if the PTO works. I’ll bet it doesn’t. There is a hollow shaft that drives off the clutch pressure plate, which drives the pto, and MCV pump, which supplies oil to the T/A, clutch assist, and brakes. They commonly strip the splines off the shaft & hub on the pressure plate. Shift issue is likely related to shift cover cam & roller assy.

The cover under the starter is the 4 speed cover. The next one back is where yout trouble is It could be shift levers so loose they spent returning shift shafts/ shift forks to neutral. May even be a high low eange shift rail mover out of position. There is a tool made to hold detent roller levers in a neutral position while shift cover is removed and there is a halfmoon key that may fall out of place if reverse shaft pulls up with hi lo cover.

Your transmission is in High Range, and your shifter is in park. The shifter was moved from high range into neutral, the high range jumped back in, and the shifter was then shoved into park, the spring release locking the shifter into park. Also, the screws come out of the shifter trim, and there is a bolt underneith. So to begin, 1. Pull shifter to Neutal position. 2. Line High/Low linkage to Neutral position and connect them as the should. 3. Be careful with how you shift it. Make sure the things are going where they need to. 4. Bleed the clutch line, and inspect if the clutch is stuck. 5. Push in the clutch pedal to start. 6. Leave the T/A in Direct Drive, Unless you are going uphill starting out. DO NOT RELEASE YOUR T/A DOWNHILL!!!!!!!!!

I've had this problem with many different makes and models especially old ones some how the shifter "drops" a gear and isn't in the right spot just takes time trying to find out where it is at and pick it up right. No taking it apart will find it just have to play with it. The only thing that I'm bothered by is the lack of clutch pedal and no disengagement when pushed. My guess is that the last time it was running the clutch went out and stuck on due to bad a bad throw out bearing and/or clutch brake if it has one and when they tried to stop it jerking on the shifter to get it out of gear and it dropped it and then got shoved in park thus putting it in 2 years

If that lever has a turtle and a rabbit, then it could be a fast and slow for each gear....my Kubota has one and the turtle is creeper gear and the rabbit is normal speed for each gear. It's very possible that the linkage is out of adjustment for the gears. It may just need tightening of the linkage levers. It also might be possible that the clutch is stuck to the pressure plate in the transmission. Normally pulling it like ya'll did would free that, if it didnt free up, then it could be that the hydraulic slave cylinder is stuck or out of or low on fluid. THESE ARE JUST GUESSES! 😅 But might be helpful and worth trying. Thanks for sharing, guys!! We appreciate what you do!

I work on tractors; primarily Oliver and Fords. I am not an expert however I do have some experience with IH. Here goes: first it made prior to the IH/Case merger from what I know. I watched the video closely; it is odd that the transmission had difficulty changing gear selection obviously. First there are some basics that I hope will help: It should have a neutral safety switch and possibly clutch safety switch also which will prevent starter engagement unless both neutral is selected and clutch is depressed. Could explain the lack of starter function from the key. Next, it is perplexing to me that the clutch clearly didn't function. I would enjoy seeing yall attempt another round at fixing it. It could be very simple. I would strongly suggest first, determine rather the clutch is mechanical or hydraulic for sure. If it is hydraulic determine it it has a master cylinder specific to the clutch only; not all tractors use primary hydraulics for the clutch; when engine off no pressure therefore clutch wound not have release pressure. It it is mechanical, i'd check to see if the mechanical linkage is seized, broke or otherwise no operating the throwout bearing. Importantly I think the 1086 had what was called a torgue amplifier but from what I know of them, even if it has failed, it should prevent the tractor from forward movement or have any effect on clutch operation. When I noticed the clutch pedal was basically on the deck, first thought I had was faulty clutch master cylinder, if it's so equipped. If it's mechanical and all linkages are intact, not damaged or out of adjustment in some way, i'd suspect a possible broken throughout bearing fork (or whatever the IH designation is). The lever on the left side of the dash may be the PTO engagement lever; like John Deere. Recently worked on a 4240 which had PTO lever on left side of dash. The parking brake seemingly not wanting to disengage is peculiar. I would expect the parking brake to be mechanical but the main brakes to be hydraulic which they also would a seperate master cylinder. The 4240 I worked on, when in park seemed to be like have a parking mechanism similar to that of truck where when in park, the trans has a parking pawl that engages to prevent forward movement. I'm no John Deere expert and don't much like em; but the operation principles are similar between machines. Wiley is on to something at least in the area of the clutch; it could very well have trans issues but the clutch is not generally internal transmission and shouldn't affect gear changes if it is releasing properly. If yall can get the clutch to work again it'd give the ability to assess the transmission for proper operation/diagnosis and prevent anyone from getting run over lol. Hope this helps.

If you look underneath, if they had it locked in gear tank, they and they tried to move it while it was locked in gear they could have taken the clock out of it. If if that’s the case then you gotta split the tractor you gotta do whatever you gotta split it to get it open to replace the pressure plate and the whole 9 yards if they’ve tried to move it with it locked in gear they will have torn the clutch out of it which means then that’s what you’re getting is the clutch has been ripped out of it so you need to split it if you want to if if not, it’s like the guy could sell it the way it is he won’t get much for it.

The top step inside the doors have 2 screws you can turn them about a quarter turn and you can lift up the steps to have better acess to the battery teminals.

You boys got a gem there, she’s had an engine swap, they originally came with a dt414 but that one has either a dt436 or dt466

Sounds like the dt436 cause they also offered the same motor in the international 530 wheel loaders.
