For me, when reading long/short lists, I try to evaluate the book through the lens of literary value instead of like/dislike. I am 59 years old and have found that books i dnf’d in my 20s because I hated them so much become a loved book in my 40s. Similarly, a favorite book from age 30, reread in my 50s, leaves my pondering how I could’ve enjoyed it so much. It’s not a matter of “Oh, I’m so much more sophisticated of a reader at 50 as opposed to 20,” but that reading enjoyment is completely subjective based on age, culture, life experience, education, etc., whereas literary value remains fairly unchanged by these variables. This is what I’ve discovered, at least, after decades of reading.

I’ve been waiting for someone to say if Kairos leans into the relationship or the historical aspect/political climate more. So thanks for addressing this! I’m definitely going to pick it up if it gets shortlisted because the premise interests me and I’m glad the historical part doesn’t take the lead. My favorite from the longlist so far is The Details

The time before the announcement is the best, read what takes our fancy and get excited about the potential longlist. Only read two of the longlist. Read The Details before announcement, an enjoyable reading experience, but forgettable. Now reading Crooked Plow, which is interesting in subject matter. Will pick up Not a River as I like Almada.

I read Simpatia and liked it, but it has stuck with me way more than I expected. I have questions and wish I was in a book club to discuss. I can't find a copy of white nights :-(

yes simpatia would be a good one to discuss! i was able to order white nights from MTO Publishing

Good video. The more time that passes the more I like 'A Dictator Calls' but it shouldn't be on this list. But then this panel seems to have got drunk on auto-fiction. Some of which barely qualifies as fiction.

i know!! after this longlist they might want to rename the prize to account for all of the autofiction! lol
