It depends on which Asian country you’re referring to. In many Asian countries, children are expected to help their parents, but most parents have a livelihood and primarily expect their children to take care of them when they grow old. On the other hand, Filipino families often go beyond this, with children being expected to support their siblings and even extended family members, sometimes to the point where they become financial leeches. He is saying he was willing to pay for her school and did not have to pay him back, and that her mother demanded she not go to school because she wanted her to keep sending money home. She is saying she was supposed to pay him back. She is a defendant, she will say anything to make him look bad. You have no concept of human trafficking. They don't marry the victims, they bring them to the US, set them up in apartments in as many bunk beds as they can cram into a bedroom 6 people to a room, tell them they have to pay for their passage, food, rent, and indenture them for life, putting them to work at a couple bucks and hour, cleaning houses, washing dishes. They don't marry them, and they sure as hell don't risk exposure by suing a victim.

In many other parts of the world, sending support to family is expected and not something you can comfortably say no to. I've seen more recent cases where JJ seems to understand that more and commends the litigant, instead of trying to tell them, "it's not your responsibility". She obviously learned from cases like this one.

Yeah it's a good thing you're not a judge because you'd have to adhere to the ACTUAL law rather than your "feelings". The young woman is a WOMAN of legal age. You can dream up that she's a child but she's legally an adult. If you don't like that then you need to lead a campaign to change the age of legal adulthood, not expect that the law can be bent to suit your personal sensibilities.

I get what Judge Judy is trying to tell the defendant in regards to it not being her responsibility to financially support her family of origin. However in Asian culture its not uncommon for people to still provide for their parents, siblings, and other relatives even if they're married and have kids of their own. My children's stepmom is South Korean and she sends a lot of money back home to her mom and sister.
