I would like to know what the International District has thus far done to help the homeless. How many businesses have reached out and made the situation better, or distributed aid? I'm not saying many didn't help, however, if you are on the side that did nothing about the problem and now are upset about "encroachment," these are the fruits of such lack of efforts and empathy. Not caring about those in need and focusing on individualism has serious consequences for an entire community. Insularism and "minding your own business" when people suffer around you is a perfect way to create problematic outcomes.
@marcjones98792 жыл бұрын
"Homeless" ppl give homeless people a bad name. Homelessness for the majority of these folks is a behavioral issue which lead them to the streets through poor decisions based on selfish addiction and mental health/self medication problems. What more should communities DO to keep them on their fix? It's insane to allow these behaviors to develop as far as this. Washington has nothing for addicts and community suffers. Addicts just walk out of rehab bc they can with a big fat bill at the end of the day, for nothing! Give give give... is not the solution. Mandatory rehab, jail, hospitals for the mental is the only solution.

NYC, Seattle, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Honolulu and San Francisco are constantly on the news for their high rates of homelessness: what's the end game here? For one, there needs to be more oversight for funding allocated to addressing homelessness in the first place. A large chunk of these nonprofits that receive local/federal funding, are a HUGE part of the problem.: the people who want to get off the streets, can't. They give them just enough resources/information to check off a box, but not a real ladder to escape chronic homelessness/drug addiction.

It's amazing that this community even exists after all they have suffered and struggled through since the late 1800s in Seattle. Persecuted for their race, stereotyped, forcibly expelled and beaten. Their parents, grandparents and great grandparents had to hide and conduct normal life, practically underground for fear of prejudice and the judgement that came with it. There was actually a "Chinese Exclusion Act" created at the time, that many used as an excuse to physically attack Seattle's Chinese population in an attempt to drive them out of the state or just "get rid" of them. Many of the old businesses were established with absolutely no help from traditional banks, as Asians were unable to obtain loans based on their "status" which really equated to their skin color. There were only a few outsiders that stood in the gap and championed the Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Hawaiians that found shelter in that community as they worked hard on labor forces that helped build and feed Seattle as well as outlying cities. While those days are gone, the Asian community as a whole, is one that honors and embraces their history, both good and bad and continue to use it as motivation to improve the life, not only for their own people, but for all who visit, live, and do business in what is now called the "International District". Truth be told, you can ask any SPD officer, these encampments, no matter how well planned, become a haven for drug users, prostitutes, thieves, felons and more. Unfortunately there are very few success stories and the problem mounts! If you do a search on Asian hate crimes in Seattle, which is becoming more of a problem, the majority of them are done at the hands of someone who resides in a homeless encampment, or claims to, and therefore, frankly, is sadly dismissed by the rest of Seattle society. This is the reality of life, over the centuries, in and around Chinatown, Seattle. Their people have worked, fought and died to create a true workable, livable, sustainable community, and hopefully to keep their own people off the streets. It's absolutely unfair to flip the script on these people and question their responsibility regarding the homeless situation that the leadership of Seattle and King County should be shouldering!

The state has closer to a million homeless people And close to 3 million people living with a roommate in the state of Washington. That is almost half of the people in the state unable to afford to live in the state. The extra high our-of-touch taxes and regulations have caused low income people unable to live a normal life in the state. An apartment that went for $300 a month in 2002 is now $2300 a month. Income hasn't kept up with the outrageous increase. Most of that is due to the large companies like Microsoft and Amazon and Boeing with out of control property inflation. Cause these problems aren’t just gonna disappear if all you wanna do is just keep complaining about them! Stuff actually needs to get done! She first starts off by saying it’s somehow racist to expand the shelter & that the community has enough shelters, yet complains about all the encampments popping up, when the expansion would help eliminate the encampments! Not to mention, the very people living in those encampments that she’s complaining about are more than likely than not people who actually lived in her community, because surveys have shown that 70-80% of unhoused people are from the local area or had lived there for a year or longer before becoming unhoused! These people may have been priced out of their homes due to the pandemic recession & job losses, inflation, rent hikes, & wage stagnation, who wanna stay close to where they’re from! So wouldn’t it actually be racist not to help? Especially since the area is mostly Asian & people of color! Then she claims that it’s not the houseless folks who are the issue, even though she just got done complaining about them, but the people who supposedly “take advantage” of them, when, once again, “those people” are more than likely to be her own community members, who’ve probably been driven to do those things for the very same reasons that made people become houseless to begin with! Hell, she probably even interacts with some of these very people on a daily basis & doesn’t even realize it! It’s really sad seeing people turn against their own community members & self interests, but here we are!
