Great video and narrative I was there on Saturday with my 11 year old boy we’re about to build our first ever layout and went for some ideas

There was some great layouts there for inspiration. Hopefully you got some bargains for your layout too. Dapol had some heavily reduced locos from their returns department, I got a pannier for £30 all because a handrail knob was missing!

I loved your layout the fact the fiddle yards where bigger than the scenic section and some of the trains stretches right across the scene was great. Glad you enjoyed the video

Thanks for saying about the fiddle yards. They split so when running in modern image the layout is smaller. I wanted to show a full length HST hence the size of the yards. That was the first ever showing of the layout in it,s full size. I was a bit worried that the scenic section would look like a pimple compared to the yards. Thanks again for adding the layout to your video.

@WesternSignalman Morning. Sorry for the late reply I came to Cornwall for the week directly after the show. The scenc section is around 4ft long by 10ins wide . The layout you saw on the weekend was around 20ft in length. The shorter version is about 15ft

ALL "TOY TRAIN SETS" & NOT A MODEL RAILWAY AMONGST THEM - APPALLING in 2023 !!! I had N Gauge exhibition layouts in the late 1980's. Where all rolling stock ran absolutely perfectly without ANY jerking. Handbuilt pointwork. Fully functioning & energised overhead catenary. 3 aspect Handbuilt signalling working as in real life from track circuitry & fully interlocked. Real life scale working couplings on rolling stock in flexi mountings so corridors touched. All locos fitted with 5 pole skew armature motors & double flywheel drives; clip out quick clean motor bogies; built in self uncoupling; frictionless gearing no lubrication required; LED Headlights/tailights etc..etc. So hardly surprisingly my layouts drew even bigger crowds than well known "OO" gauge layouts of that time !!! Frighteningly all the trains were out of the packet commercial items with all that technology included, even back in 1987. Even today these model locos cost only around £50 each. Literally Rolls-Royces at Ford prices !!! So who could possibly make such incredible models ? ANSWER: The Worlds biggest model train manufacturers of course, all of which are Japanese companies, and the models are ALL Japanese outline. Made by Tomix; Kato; Green Max; Hasegawa; Micro Ace; Modemo & others. Indeed TOMIX alone produce more N scale model trains per year, than ALL European ranges put together in ALL SCALES up to Gauge ONE. Tomix have an estimated 12.5 MILLION N scale customers in Japan. The whole of Europe for ALL SCALES up to Gauge 1 is estimated to have only 1.7 - 1.8 Million customers (2022 figures). Which explains the mindboggling technology, quality, & low prices !!!

Have a question for you. How did you do the streets, is it a decal or did you hand paint them ????

As it’s an exhibition video I couldn’t say how each modeller does their roads. I personally use posca paint pens with masking tape and card templates.

If I actually had any proper layout modelling skills I'd love to display my Japanese N-Gauge layout based around a fictional location in Kyushu with shinkansen, limited express and local trains, but then again I'd have no way to transport it either.

If you feel your skills need improving why not build a small layout to practise on, maybe something in a box file or similar, that way it doesn’t take up too much space and you could easily transport it. It’s what I did, I built a small 009 to improve my scenery skills

Loved your style of video and narrative, but really disappointed this year with the show, considering a lot of the layouts are supposed to be the best N scale in the country I thought the quality on some were poor. Also N scale doesn't run at 200mph like some layouts appeared to be. To the organisers cost of entry too expensive and I think there are now better exhibitions about and better value. Just my thoughts, a lot of people seemed to enjoy the show. And before you all hark on about if you've never done exhibition layouts don't knock it, I have for over 20 years and everyone appeared in print as well.

I think the heat had a part to play that day a lot of exhibitors had commented on how it was causing issues and finding slow speed wasn’t possible. This show is a funny one I’ve been a few times and some years are certainly better than others. 2021 was a good year I felt, as due to restrictions the layouts had to be more spread out which meant there was less layouts but they where all high quality.
