At least what I know, It's all thanks to the Powerplay26-program they started in like 2010 where they give more room for the young players in the top league (or something like that). Rise of Finnish hockey recently is all thanks to a former coach of the national team, Erkka Westerlund. He put up a meeting in like 2008 where all the "big bosses" of hockey would meet and he wanted to reform the junior development program, focusing more on individual skills (without forgetting the Finnish style of play in hockey), better co-operation between the national- and youth teams (better tracking of development and room for improvements of the prospects). This was made possible by hiring a fulltime coaches to each of the national junior teams starting from like U15 or something.

@@ibee7823 I actually also have to credit the Suiss NLA and its marketing towards to the german markets, it provided a real stepping stone league for German players to develop, and garnered great fan interest in the game. Then the silver medal in 2018 really brought the worlds attention to german hockey. The Spengler cup too I think if the federal government knows it has potential to compete with the best, it will continue funding ice hockey development - and Germany will be a force alongside the traditional greats. I

Yeah 962$ is low low. Thats less than i paid for single A. 962$ is the equipment but then you have Travel cost, league registration costs, and in most cases you have to pay to enter tournaments with your team, then you have hotel costs in that case. Its crazy to think that there could have been some kid who was better than Gretzky who never got to leave the Pond because his family was poor. If youre not middle class or upper middle class you are dead in the water

I play beer league in central Japan. We have 22 men's league teams, most of it is the legacy of Paul Kariya and the Nagano winter games which really sparked a passionate (though not widespread) interest in the world's greatest sport.

Matvei Michkov is probably the best prospect I've ever seen. I've never seen any kid close to his age with his goal scoring ability except maybe Ovi. I think he's quite a lot better than Bedard. He probably won't go first though, because of his KHL contract.

most KHL contracts signed at that age have an NHL out. But these outs only are for the NHL, if the player is sent to the AHL or any other league, the KHL team can recall them. Thats why many russian prospects don't play in the AHL. Michkov's contract most likely has this out so he probably would play in his true rookie year

I think it’s a sign of stupidity to scout children like they are close to the nhl. I remember I played with Nick Suzuki in minor hockey and no one woulda thought he was going to the nhl at that age. There was at least 7 guys on my team that people woulda picked over him. Parents actually got kicked off the team for the year when they got mad at the coach for making Suzuki captain. Growth spurt matters way to much in hockey. This kid might grow and lose all his skill, or he might not grow at all. I’ve seen both happen to plenty of unreal children when everyone else develops.

Germany has had several great players before Uwe Krupp and Jochen Hecht in NHL. Erich Kühnhackl was the German Lemieux in his prime. 83 goals and 155 points in 48 German league games during his best season. He was a big boy! Also Udo Kiessling was also great, Markus Kuhl, Gerd Truntschka, Dieter Hegen... Italy also had one of the most dominating international lines of the 80's. Zarrillo - Orlando - Topatigh were lighting the red light every night, although Gaetano Orlando had a dual citizenship with Italy and Canada.

Im always gonna root for someone who comes out of a less privilaged country and enviroment. Hockey is in many ways similar to motorsports that you see the same nationalities mostly and rarely do you see someone with poor financial situation making it out of junior categories or even having chance to have it as a hobby for a long time.

$962? really? It was over $1000 just to sign up to the league. I'm from a small town in Alberta so the travel costs alone for the year was 10x that. Nevermind needing bigger skates every year, taller sticks. Pretty much all new/used equipment every 2 years. I really dont know how my parents did it on top of feeding the 3 of us kids

I had to buy my son 2 pairs of skates last year because with the supply shortage he had a growth spurt right before tryouts, and the only skates we could find were either $70 or $400. Turned out they were both wrong for him (his skating was much more labored and he was much slower and less confident in the expensive skates the before) and we had to buy another pair partway through the season, which was another $250, but made a world of difference in his play. He's broken 2 sticks this year ($100 each), spent the money on a good stick for him now ($179)...and he's 11. So I know.

@@Milehighsnake98 oh man your experience sounds similar to what my parents went through. I went through 3 pairs of skates the one season. Finally when the feet stopped growing it was $500 for a nice fitted pair. And from about 12 it was 3-5 sticks a year. Started buying the pro grade sticks. The same ones they use in the NHL. About $300 to $500 a stick but at least they last me more then half a season. Gloves were 200. That's why I think the average number given is a little low.

@@tomwilson3969 I guess in a way I was lucky because we had to replace his skates after the first 2 years not because he outgrew them, but because the boot broke down. His feet didn't grow. Not often a kid is wearing the same size skates at 10 as he did at 7. But last year, we didn't realize that anyone made a "mid cut" boot for hockey skates, and that's what the expensive ones were. So he wasn't getting the ankle support he was used to and he was bending his ankles bad, had never done that before. It was printed in real small letters on the back of the boot where you wouldn't think about it. Got normal skates and he took off.

Several issues here: -Iguchi was never an elite prospect. He was the most popular because armchair scouts on YT were wow’d by his moves. -Ando was first draft eligible in the 2021 draft. He’s not going to see his name called this year either (most likely).

I grew up without much, but played hockey from age 10. I delivered newspapers year round and mowed lawns in the summer. That covered game fees and used or cheap equipment. It doesn’t have to be expensive. I’m 37 now, so it wasn’t ages ago. Wasn’t really a big deal back then. My friends and I wanted to work to make money. Raking leaves, shoveling snow, mowing lawns, washing cars, paper routes, etc. An afternoon on the weekends and a kid can earn more than enough to play hockey.

Yeah I agree hockey is expensive. My family have spent over a thousand dollars at the age of 11. I play in Australia and the rink is owned by figure skaters so I get almost no ice time. I have to play up too because there’s no enough kids in my age group and I don’t want to play down. I used to play in Canada and North America but I had to move due to my Dad’s work.

A lot of hate on here in regards to the kids from Japan. Sure, the talent pool is hugely different from the US, Canada, Europe and Russia, but when you’re good, you’re good. I’d bet pulling together the top 13-15 skaters in Japan at the PW/Bantam level and putting them up against top tier teams in either country and you’d be surprised. There are several Japanese players all through the USHL, NAHL, NA3HL levels and a few of them are REALLY good. The problem is playing on smaller ice sheets, adjusting to a more fluid game, and dealing with the mental aspect of the game. It’s definitely not an easy transition, nor is it easy fighting for roster spots when you’re virtually unknown. I personally think it’s awesome seeing all these “smaller”, unknown countries producing talent. 🇯🇵🎌

The Michkov v Bedard rivalry should be crazy. Michkov looks a decent bit better, but the transition from Euro to North American hockey can be hard for some players. I hope they get drafted by division rivals similar to Crosby and Ovi.

Russia3 league and MHL aren't the same. Russia3 is the third tier of pro hockey, while the MHL is Russian juniors, equivalent to major junior in North America. It's not fair to compare Michkov's MHL stats to Ovi and Malkin's Russia3 stats

Russia3 was the 3rd ranked league within Russia during Ovi and Malkin's time in Russia. In 2009 they restructured Russian hockey to develop into Russia1 = KHL, Russia2 = VHL, and Russia3 would mostly resemble the MHL and consists of talent that would've been similar to what it was pre-2009. If anything, talent pools have gotten much deeper since the early 2000's.

had no idea mitchkov was signed in the KHL that long. makes the draft a lot more interesting when he's eligible. cant see him escaping the first round either way because lots of guys who go late first round don't pan out so I don't think its any more risky taking him. but do you take him top 5, wait the years out & risk him not coming here? very intriguing

Well first went Ekblad who as a defender had in OHL 53(20-33) points in 58 games and second was Reinhart who had 105 points in 60 games - almost same as Draisaitl, so yeah he went third... What is more crazy is that in this draft Pastrnak went 25th, Point went 79th lmao

I'm 99% sure that Michkov has a NHL clause in his contract. Which means if he signs NHL contract his current KHL contract terminates or if he signs and doesn't get play time in NHL and gets sent down instead of AHL he'll go to KHL.

I believe really any form of Motorsport is much more expensive, like it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and that’s ONLY IN KARTING. Hockey is probably the most played expensive sport, by that I mean that many more people play hockey rather than race karts. So basically your parents have to be very rich to race or you have to get sponsored very young, such as F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton or Kimi Raikkonen who had so much talent that they were sponsored as like 7 year olds or maybe even younger idk.

I play in a beer league and I have seen some solid players that began playing hockey around 18-20yo. You catch up quickly. Especially if you have some open rinks or outdoor rinks where youa can practice by yourself even now and then.
