That was back when lightweight and underpowered bikes actually tested the rider's ability to get them through rough terrain for a week and keep them together and running. It was more a test of the bikes and riders than a race.

Why did they call it "Trials" and not "Enduro" ??

It was trials because back in the mists of time these events originated as a test of machinery reliability as a test of rider skills and so they were called reliability trials. Observed trials were an off-shoot. When the first ISDT was held in 1913 and the perpetual trophies acquired the name trials stuck. Outside of the US the word Enduro was unknown although it started to filter into British Motorcycle mags in the late 60’s. The FIM decided a refresh was needed and rebranded what was still a well known event in 1979.
