One doesn't train for a yoga competition to be "the best" at yoga. It is a personal goal to strive towards. Unlike a traditional competition, at a yoga competition, your opponents are not wishing for you to fail. Instead, it is a very supportive atmosphere. My teacher said "if one person in the crowd decides to start yoga because of watching me compete, my job is done." It is not for the glory, it is for the love of yoga!

The one in front is the winner. There is only one winner, always. It's the winner, the second position, the third position and the other participants which are also called "losers" because they lost. There is by no possible means true what you said. The guy in the front is the winner. If you participated here, you would be the loser. It's as simple as that. Also, first prize is superior to second and third prize and is far more superior that the participants. Is by all means measurable. Keep your emotional thinking for yourself ma'am

Its not a yoga competition. It is a yoga 'aasanas' competition, and thats ok. Nothing wrong in it. ( I am from india. This is common. Local schools organise that type of competitions. Not the convent or fancy ones ) This is totaly ok to encourege young ones to communicate their souls through your anga aasanas. This is not for yogis. This is for practicers Who want to achieve physical fitness for the next step. So do not pass judgments on 'yog' whithout knowing anything about sanatan dharm or Guru shishya parampara ( ancient educational system) from India.

There shouldn't be any judgement. There is no right or wrong in yoga, It is as it is. You can perceive this "competition" however you want to. But isn't this competition getting more exposure for the practice of yoga. This means more people getting invited to the spiritual path. Competition is not a bad thing it can help with motivation and drive. Its the intention of the person which counts.

@yugandali Right, I agree with you as far as the true spirit of Yoga, especially original forms such as Kundalini. But the postures are a very physical aspect, so if you were to remove just the postures from the practice and compare your abilities, it becomes pretty inspiring from a purely physical standpoint -- so while this isn't something to strive for solely, I think it's fine to just look at it from a spectacle standpoint.

It's interesting to see how asana's can be done, purely from a physical point of view. But of course it has nothing to do with yoga. Basically, someone who has a very bad technique can still be a much better yogi than someone who has a perfect asana technique. As each advanced yogi knows, yoga is about self acceptance, making the role of the ego smaller, a deep spiritual connection. That can be achieved without a perfect technique. Whereas someone with a perfect technique can still -potentially- stay at the surface and never go deeper within.

This is not the practice that I came to love but I am not going to bash it just because I can. From a physical aspect, the level of control and mental focus these men displayed are truly impressive and inspiring, which I believe is similar to how much they put in in their regular practices regardless of their lineages, physical and otherwise. It cannot be denied that historically, public demos of asana practice were done in the past to create awareness and invite young men to join. And this is no different now basing it on this spectacle aside from the 'competition' level. Nevertheless, I believe 'competition' will never be taken away since the ego will always be there whether it be competing against fluctuations of the mind or even going respectfully beyond the limits of the body. There will always be a semblance of the 'push-pull' dance in it. Now, how this dance translates off the mat is where for me real yoga happens.
