Japan travel guide to what to do and eat in Miyajima, Hiroshima in a day!
Hiroshima is near the bottom of the main island Honshu and a must visit when coming to Hiroshima is the island Itsukushima, more popularly known as Miyajima. It’s one of Japan’s top 3 scenic sights, most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water.
Miyajima island is also a great place for a day trip from the Kansai region like Kyoto and Osaka but I would recommend staying in Hiroshima for a few days to explore Hiroshima city and another day for Miyajima island.
I started my trip off at Hiroshima station and took a 25 minute train ride to JR Miyajima-guchi station.
From there it’s less than a 5 minute walk to the ferry terminal where you will take a 10 minute ferry ride to go to Miyajima island.
Places visited:
Itsukushima Shrine and the “floating tori gate”
Omotesando Shopping Street
Momiji Bridge
Daisho-in Temple
Senjokaku and the 5 story Pagoda

I visited at this time, last year. (in 2019). I stayed at the Hotel Park Side Hiroshima (www.park-side.co.jp/english/), very affordable and only a short walk to Peace Park. Allow yourself plenty of time to visit, because even the bus ride from the airport to the bus/Shinkasen station is a 45 minute ride. And yes, the little time I spent on the island was wonderful. Take the young lady seriously when she talks about low tide. I arranged my visit to the Grand Torii/Floating Torii at what I thought was low tide, but it wasn't low enough. I was not able to walk out to the torii. After taking pictures, I walked around the town while I waited for my next ferry (which docks very close to the Atomic Dome). If you go, please enjoy your stay.

I visit this island twice and still want to comeback , love the slow walk every mornings and enjoy the early morning look to sunrise and sunset in the evening . You need 2 or 3 days here relaxing and explore this island . My first visit in 2017 then 5 years later I comeback 2022. ❤

I love your videography. I love your choice of music (Ghibli for life!). When I visited Japan all those years ago, Hiroshima was so unforgettable. It was a magical place. The Peace Park made me cry but also gave me hope whilst Miyajima mesmerised me. This is so nostalgic.

Wow I was there just yesterday! Something to note is that you can use the JR pass to get to Miyajimaguchi and also on the JR ferry. But if you don't have the JR pass the line for the other ferry seemed a lot shorter and maybe less crowded. I didn't get to see as much as you did. I only saw Itsukushima shrine and Omotesando, so I am very thankful for this video. God, those oysters were so good, I am ruined for oysters forever now. I don't think any others will even stand close to them. Cheers

Thanks so much for showing this beautiful place. I particularly noticed at 6:16 there is unique icon hardly found these days anywhere. Yes, the traditional red post box on the street. I also enjoyed how locals tell stories and their traditions. Just momiji manju has such wonderful story behind. Travelling is really about getting to know the locals, specialty, and traditional culture.
