This album deserves another listen or two or fifty... I had pretty much given up on Interpol after their 4th album and wasn't huge into El Pintor initially but now I feel it's one of Interpol's finest albums. The songs have many hidden layers that peel away with each listen. My Blue Supreme was a standout to me, but I like every track here.

Play the album like this, it improves quite a bit: Everything is Wrong Tidal Wave All the Rage Twice as Hard My Blue Supreme Same Town, New Story (though, personally, I'd wipe this song out and include The Depths and/or Malfeasence) Ancient Ways Anywhere My Desire Breaker 1
@PatrickTK21
@PatrickTK21 10 жыл бұрын
I like what you've done here- "Same Town" is just kind of an awkward song (and not in the cool Interpol way), so I'd trade it for "Malfeasance" (which is excellent) in a second.

***** Well, I just realized I had 2 problems with the record: 1) it has no real beginning or end, and 2) it's front loaded. So it was just a matter of finding a song that really felt like an opener (I chose EIW because of the way the instruments come in one by one in the intro), one that really felt like a closer (Breaker 1 was a no-brainer, what with its Not Even Jail-esque intensity and cool-as-fuck radio-recorded outro), and then finding a natural flow for the rest of the songs (like, for example, putting ATRBH and TAH back-to-back: the first ends in a fade-out and the second begins with a fade-in).

I think the 6 is a little unfair if you put the album in context. After their last album bombed, it was only natural that they would go back to doing what they do best (to get some back the confidence and self-belief int their talent they had lost). With the success of El-Pintor, I'm fairly sure they'll experiment a little more on the next record. On a different note, i'm noticing that his reviews are starting to get a little predictable. Any album that's solid, but not genre-pushing or avant garde, gets a lukewarm response (5-7) from him. I think a solid album could warrant an 8 but hey! that's what opinions are there for!. I must say, though, I do like the level of detail he gives with each review.

I didn't even need to see the review, I knew it would be 6/10. It's like he doesn't even try anymore. This album is a 7.5 for me, strictly off of the first 3 tracks alone, definitely the best stuff Interpol has done in years. Also the bonus track The Depths is stellar, don't know why it wasn't included on the original album.

I really enjoyed it, it played it safe and I think the majority of people actually wanted that after the 4th album. The band really had to prove themselves on this record, so much of interpol fandom is deluded about the importance of Carlos & chose to deny the fact Carlos main the architect of the mediocre 3rd & 4th album. So in that sense, mission complete but probably won't draw in any fans in the long run. Unlike the end of last album, I'm excited to hear where what they will do next.

You often say that you'd wish some bands would break the monotony and expand their horizons when reviewing an album that sounds very much like their older work, sometimes even holding that against the album. But how often do you actually like it when bands do that? Because from the reviews of yours that I've watched, it doesn't tend to have a very high success rate.

Good review. I'd give the album about a 7. El Pintor, unfortunately, is one of those albums where only about 4 or 5 songs are good. The rest are just pretty much mediocre. You really want to love the WHOLE album, but certain tracks just don't really do anything for me. I found that about 3 excellent tracks save the album as a whole. The good thing about El Pintor is that the few good songs that are on the album are actually some of Interpol's better songs in the last several years, and that in itself says quite a lot.
@ChromeKong

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but: 1) Please don’t compare Interpol with Coca Cola. WHAT ARE YOU DOING MAN 2) This album is (and deserves) more than a 6. 3) Interpol repeating themselves? That's not true. Listen closely, really listen next time. If it's necessary, listen to all of their records in a row, and then you tell us why you think they are "repeating" themselves. Otherwise, your review deserves less than a 6. like. come. on

I disagree with him giving it a 6, yes (album was a solid 7 or 8). However, Interpol's music has been incredibly formulaic after Antics came out, and then the whole "Chameleons meets Pixies" sound wore thin.

so the score is more about how much he enjoyed it than anything else. like really gotta listen to everything he says. its just a formality. fantano's reasoning for a six is basically timing and expectations and everything else combined. so say this same materal had dropped three years ago he probably would have givent ita 7. say ithad been the second thing from interpol he ever heard he would have given it an eight maybe an 9. but by now it felt like a formula. and that is his point to giving it a 6. its enjoyable anything above 5 is enjoyed anything below 5 is boring or annoying or bad and 5 is like MEH. he gives you the idea and i agree that this would be an absolutely GREAT album to start listening to interpol with if youve never heard them before..

I love this album heaps personally it would sit as an 8 for me. I still have it on my phone and listen to it a fair bit. Love the hooks, the atmosphere and the diversity of the tracks. for me it;s 1. Turn On The Bright Lights 2. Antics 3. El Pintor 4. Our Love to Admire 5. Interpol 6. Marauder (being beat up by fans isn't helping me like this one lol) Also S/T is wayy underrated IMO. It kinda blurs together on first few listens and it's hard to tease out the appealing bits, but a surprising chunk of the album managed to stick with me in retrospect. Marauder kinda has the same problem but way less of the album left any impression with me personally and I don't really find much of it memorable in a positive way tbh

I agree on most points. I see this album as Antics II in terms of style but following the self titled album I'm delighted they have found their drive again. Our love to admire was a progression in sound that isn't followed up on this album which is a shame in some ways- Lighthouse and Wrecking Ball were interesting songs that were subtler and more carefully arranged than previous works. Bass is back which is good. This is a solid album that I am enjoying the crap out of. I can't wait to see these songs live. Thank crap the bass is back!!

Tyranny by JC + The Voidz, and now El Pintor. Two albums I love (in case of Tyranny, I love what I've heard from both singles and the snippets in preview videos so far and love pretty much all Julian does so will likely love the record) and I expected Anthony to hate. Couple of curveballs Fantano, but welcomed nonetheless! Blue Supreme, Breaker 1 and All The Rage are stand outs for me on this album. It's certainly a slick record, from other artists that might be a criticism, but here it just makes sense

The self titled album was good. However, I only liked a few of the songs on there. I didn't think the album as a body of work itself was great.

Nostalgic_Chaos that's probably fair, Success & Lights are 2 of my favorite tracks from them, but they sounded a bit tired. Better than OLTA tho.

Mike Osaer Yeah, Success and Lights are great tracks. Summer Well was one of my personal favourites as well, also Always Malaise and The Undoing. The rest I wasn't too keen on, but I do agree that it was better than OLTA, and a lot darker.

I think its an 8 for me. When I listened to this band I can only count on hands songs that really hit home to me. I guess it had a lot to do with how the guitar & vocal reverb / layering bleeds through the mix. This album had a lot of that so I'm a big fan of this one.

I personally can't stand Weezer these days. it's been about 15 years since they've made a good album. the Blue Album, Pinkerton, and Green album were all incredible! maladroit has like 3 great songs and the rest was forgettable and everything since have been downright awful.

HI! great review! i loved it, because it did feel as if they... returned and that got me excited. i've listened to it twice so far, but also got the sense of deja vu. what i mean by that is that, when i first started listening to interpol in 2002, turn on the bright lights didn't really capture me, rather, it crept up slowly, turning into one of my favorite albums of the decade. I felt the same way about antics. it took a few listens before it turned into a recorded i wanted to listen over and over... el pintor seems that way too. i've listend to it twice so far, and i'm already thinking of wanting to listen to it again sooner than later... so... yeah... im glad they're back. thanks again!

Yup, agreed with this review. It's a pretty enjoyable record with some great tracks and some fresh sounds that I wouldn't mind replaying except for Breaker 1 or Same Town. Can't help but singing along to the oooooh fuck the ancient ways, and love the instrumentation on My Blue Supreme, and Everywhere got some great tremolo picking. Not album of the year material but as a fan, I was satisfied.

El Pintor was a really good album. It definitely helps rekindle the excitement after the Self-Titled left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I do wish some of the songs had better structure to the song. I really do hope they continue moving forward in the this direction and maybe surprise in a future album down the road. In my honest opinion, this album has a similar feel to that of Queens of the Stone Age "...like clockwork." Two bands who had a not so stellar album, trying to go back to their previous albums and enhance their sound a little more. Now I am comparing the two because they are both my favourite bands out there but that's how I took their albums when they dropped. Overall, Interpol's album would be a solid 7.5 / 10 for me. Its a great album to listen to when driving for sure.

I agree with it being slightly above average. Not stunning, but not terrible. El Pintor is good. I would have liked some more of that Turn on the Bright Lights murky gloom or some sharper hooks like in Antics, but the album is entertaining. Paul needs to practice his falsetto though. LEAST FAV TRACK: My Blue Supreme

Album was ok... This was actually my first introduction to Interpol, i haven't heard anything by them (except for a few songs here and there) aside from this. Songwriting on this album isn't great or anything, cause to be honest, i literally forgot i even listened to this album like an hour after i finished it... I thought the only truly memorable songs were My Desire, and All the Rage Back Home. But overall the album was still solid.. Don't know if i'll return to it.. But i definitely will listen to My Desire again at some point. They've got a pretty unique sound also.. I'd probably give it like a strong 6. P.S., are you gonna review the new Perfume Genius record "Too Bright" Anthony? Cause i actually really like that album! :-) keep up the good work.

Have been a long time fan of Interpol. I have seen them live as well a few times. I felt like this album is a cop out as you said. They didn't go hard. Just played it safe. But I guess they have to get this record out and understand where they are now as a three piece. I was very disappointed that there are no tracks than come close to "Not Even Jail" or "Take you on a cruise" and the lyrics don't really paint a scene like they once did. Its more abstract. This release is sort of boring in a way. Its like "Hey guys, its us, Interpol. Remember?" I hope they can hold it together and we can see what the next album will bring. I also have to agree that "Same Town, New Story" has the worst guitar riffs of all time. That shouldn't have been played more than twice. Maybe without Carols there to say, "Alright Daniel, we get it, you love that riff." is what the real change is. Also when I saw them live this year, their touring bassist has changed the original bass tone. This is more of something and audiophile would notice. So when they go into their old stuff the tone is much fatter which is sort of annoying to someone who adored their sound for so many years.

Feel you on the "cop out" comment. However the tone, and atmosphere that Interpol always goes for is something I'm a sucker for so on the whole I was pleased with the return to form. I am definitely interested in where they go next. Whereas when there self titled album came out I was left extremely apathetic towards them.

There's this duality in me, being satisfied by Interpol's choice to look back to the past, and at the same time, thinking that they're just repeating themselves... In the end I like Elpintor, and I'd love to hear them live (the first and the last time I went to one o their concerts I enjoyed it a lot). Great video as usual.
