Interpreting a Lead Sheet with Style - Music Performance

Music Matters

Күн бұрын

How to play from a lead sheet and inject some musical style into the accompaniment. This music performance lesson begins with some key reminders about reading from a lead sheet and then demonstrates a basic reading, presenting the melody in the right hand and the chords in the left hand. Having discovered the shortcomings of this approach the video explains how to organise the chords in a more satisfying way then explores options for distribution of the rhythm and texture in ways that bring out the character of the song. The video ends with a more sophisticated performance. Useful for anyone wanting to achieve a really satisfying interpretation of a lead sheet.

That's a great video. The learning points you teach are sure to enrich any piece of music based on a lead sheet, and there's a good amount of practice and innovation to be done to achieve a more 'sophisticated' sound. Thanks very much for posting.

Wonderful lesson, thanks so much. I've always been fond of that particular melody. I've never before had the opportunity to have someone (who plays from lead sheets) explain exactly how it's (properly and successfully) done. I learn so much from these videos. I am forever learning how much I don't know about music. Again, thanks so very much!

"I think I missed a line". Yes you did Gareth, but you are so much in command of skills and taste that your mistakes actually make the song better. Like the G7 in bar 8 which you steadily play as Gmaj7, for a much grander effect. Simply superb. Looking for more inspiring mistakes, Maestro! 👏 ✌ Cheers

I went through 4 music teachers in the 1950's and never really understood a thing, very formal in those days. I am now 75 and I can understand your wonderful explanations of what is a complicated subject. Probably not going to get my long lost ambition of being a musician but at least it is improving my modest skills on the keys.

This is such an inspiring video, can't wait to get to the piano to try some of these ideas out. Parts of it reminded me of a video clip I saw recently of Brad Mehldau doing a Q&A (I don't have link unfortunately), he was explaining that when he starts working on a piece he plays just with his right hand - playing the melody and harmonising it best as he can - only adding the left hand later. Many thanks Gareth, I can't imagine a better or clearer explanation of how to work with a lead sheet.

Super video. Taking it in its entirety there is little to add. However, and without wishing to sound presumptuous, my expertise as an instructor and examiner is in a totally different field. My students told me that the fact that I would summarise the important reference points and caveats, helped them to see more clearly how to move up to the next level. For instance, Gareth might have stated clearly that a solid knowledge of the composition of each chord in the piece was essential for any meaningful application of the points he was making. I am prepared to accept that to be told "that's obvious" would be difficult to argue against, except for a lifetime of dealing with students to whom "that's obvious" often did not apply.

This is excellent! I'm at the point where plonking chords in the left hand my ear goes OH NO that's awful!! But I have a hard time figuring out exactly what it is these sophisticated pianists are doing to sound so good. I basically do it on the guitar...I play chords different ways at different position of the neck..I'll also use/mix different picking/strumming patterns. Example...the simple A min chord. I can play it at the NUT...The highest is the Open E I can barr it at the 5th fret..The highest note is the A or I can play the F maj7 barr shape at the 8th fret..( simply NOT play the F) or play the C, 3, 6 ( inverted A min)....I can play Open A or...play the A at the 12 fret my pinky... It's going to sound different..but they're all variations of the A min.. SPREAD OUT in different octaves...or close . Plus mix it up with different picking/strumming/rythm... Do simple hammer on/pull..slide , bends, legato ...ect. Not just steggato Breath LIFE ( music) into a simple A min chord ( on paper)

@@figueroa661 it dosnt have to be hard or finger twisters to make beautiful sounding music ( chords).. You can do the same with the D min ( barr chord) at the 5th fret... Play it...Not barring...Move your Index finger around to play different Bass notes....such as Open A....Bb ( on the low E). or..the Eb, Db, Ab..( those so call out of key notes) Then just reach over to play the F maj7 ( open chord shape...barr at the 5th fret) or make the F 3, 6...against the Open E....( Inverted D min). Then play the Bb with your Index... The Bb is just the N6 chord.... Or make the A min at the Nut...Play the Bb with your INDEX.. or the F....ect Or slide that up 4 frets to Db Maj7...with open E That's the other N6 chord..The Lyd #2, #6...version. E is b3 or #9 from Db...it is what it is..if you need THEORY to back it up.lol Then a simple G major or G7 into C MAjor..ect or make Inverted F min ( Db maj7...less barr) F min is just Lyd b3 of C Harmonic MAJOR or................Lyd #2 of A Harmonic min sometimes...i'll slide ( sound) that F,3, 6.. chord up and back down to C maj7 or ( inverted E min) or I'll shift my INDEX finger to play the high G note with the inside of my finger... just enough to play the G note.... After I play the E note with my PINKY at the 7th fret.. In a nutshell arpeggiate E min. then simply play the A min barr chord at the 5th fret. or make C, 3 ( diad)...Octave with your Pinky at the 5 th fret. with open B and E On paper it's C Maj7....but it'll sound different if you arpeggiate it.. Or keep finger on the C note.( 5th fret)..make D ,b3 diad below it.. You can play the Open A or alter finger it or play the C note with Open D. There's all kinds of cool stuff you can do...that's just in C MAJOR/Amin. I do it in E MAJOR/C#min or..........B MAJOR/G#min....( I'll modulate) You can use simple fingering..or just make Triads on the middle 3 strings...It'll sound pretty. or mix it up...play complete barr chord sometimes

Great. Good to see that lots of these advises I taught myself over the years. But I'm still not using the lead sheet. I listen. Let sink the melody in. Imagine a bass I want to hear with it. And then let my right hand loose to play the harmony with the melody with some help of the left hand. All guided by my internal "I-music" computer which suggests chords and variations. Get the hang of it. Just play for many years and you'll get there. But... I can improve too thanks to these lessens. Want more Bach input. More secondary melody lines (or third or fourth lines). Matthew Fisher of Procol Harum could do that too. Thanks for the lesson!

My only problem now is to learn the chords. I say that because although I have played a piano for 60+ years, it was purely by reading music with normal treble and bass clef arrangement by the composer and I 2s never taught chord reading. However as winter be be upon us in the not to distant future, maybe I can devote some time to just that. Any ideas for learning to quickly grasp chords? Thanks again.

I learned the chords just by doing it. Take any lead sheat and just start playing. If you encounter an unknown chord, figure it out yourself and carry on. In no time you'll learn most chords. You may ignore 9th, 11th and 13th, but eventually you'll want to learn these too. You do need to know some essential theory how chords are constructed, but that info is easily found on the internet.

Excellent. Fake books provide massive quantities of raw material. Your concise lesson provides a framework for turning that raw material into a personal interpretation/arrangement. Still challenging for an amateur pianist, but your lesson helps one to understand this process and approach it a little at a time. Parenthetically, I would compare your delivery to that of the fellow who does "Just have a Think." Very welcoming and nonthreatening. You describe my current approach to rendering a lead sheet as "the kiss of death" for the song. But no offense taken.

@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 2 жыл бұрын
The C# dim 7 is a Supertonic 7th in the key of B coming before F#7 which is the Dominant 7th in B. The F# dim 7 is performing the same function as it’s a Supertonic 7th in E minor so it progresses from II7 to V7 to I in E minor. The B dim 7 is again following the same route. It’s a Supertonic 7th in A minor followed by V7 I in A minor. Glad you enjoyed the song writing course. Have a look at our other courses. Much of use to you.
