The skills concept ,edging,steering,pressureing,encompassing balance over the ski was the last real improvement in ski instruction. 1980s
@Triggerboy62 Жыл бұрын
Good skiing always existed. All of our skiing is based on fundamentals dating way back in time.
@MrDogonjon Жыл бұрын
The skills concept is deeply flawed, to many redundancies with three or four skills that are not really skills. Even the 5 fundamentals is a sloppy mess of nonsense information. Good thing fun is frivolous unnecessary nonsense. The only relavent skiing publication was "The New Way to Ski" 1957 Willie Schiefler. PSIA shamefully tried in vain to dismiss this masterpiece of ski education. No one even knows about it. I sadly seem to be the only one with any recollection of the content.... There is only one skill... Gauged Pressure Manipulations.
@MrDogonjon Жыл бұрын
@suz4359 "The New way to ski" outlined the progression we use today but PSIA replaced snowplow ( a good analogy for describing ski behavior) with the wedge which has little or no analogy to skiing... Learning happens in discreet levels of excitation (the principle of least action= the guiding priinciple of quantum mechanics). We once had levels A-F replaced by Levels 1-7 which are the same thing just unnecessarily replacing skill levels with numbers to confuse certification levels I- III which were once registered, associate, full certification. I am full Certified in 1983 by PNSIA (now PSIA-NW). Time has not treated PSIA well their ambitions are self-serving ignoring the reality of what ski instructors cope with daily to promote their own agenda which has no basis in physics. The physics of PSIA is so deeply flawed that even mentioning the possibility of defining skiing in accepted physics (Local frame of reference/ General Relativity, inertial frame of reference/ Special Relativity, rectilinear motion, counterbary, dynamic counterbary) terms is heresy. I got into a flame war with PSIA RM examiners and trolled them over a photo of Herman Maier on Epicski.com in a thread involving Henry Kravis- Yes that Henry Kravis (KSL Aspen- KKR)= Icon Pass. They truly dispised my thesis "The Esoteric properties of Ski Turn Initiation." For my PSIA-W examiner tryout. Harold Harb stole " the New Way to Ski" title for his book. I can't talk about Harold with out thinking about certain disturbing unprofessional facts. Harold promotes direct to parallel which is included in "The New Way to Ski) as an alternative progression for athletic students learning powder skiing. but Harold promotes it as a beginner progression which violate the principle of least action.

Most countries are back to the normal narrow stance. Huge improvement. Just look at Montenegro and Norway to see how a wide stance hinders good skiing.
@Triggerboy62 Жыл бұрын
This is indeed an interesting topic, stance width. Not many advocate a wide stance nowadays but seems like many skiers still use one. Narrow is way better. Cheers, Tom
@MrDogonjon Жыл бұрын
Width of stance depends on the dynamics of the situation. Sync skiing at slower speeds narrow stance to look pretty, detune dynamics= more skidded turns are better for choreography. You must know and trust the entire teams skiing. Sadly over done routines with many odd variations. Stick to the cheese Grater to build synch skills and new routines.

Dear Tom, thank you for your work. As you already know, two teams (Hungary and Ireland) have had their names changed. I know it was not easy to follow, who is who, but the demo teams ran in alphabetical order. The Hungarian Association of Ski Instructors and each member of the demo team put a lot of time, money, and effort into attending the Interski Congress in Levi. We are proud of the team and would like to see our name correctly displayed. Please solve the problem! If not otherwise possible, please write in the video's accompanying text "Attention, two country names have been accidentally spelled backward. The team in green and white is Hungary, and the team in black is Ireland. Thank you. Katalin Egri, President of the Hungarian Association

Great work, Tom, getting this out so quickly. Random observations from someone with no right to any opinion. Demo outfits matter-why does NZ always dress up in baggy potato sacks like snowboarders from 15 years ago? Up-unweighting is alive and well. Snowboarding works in the air but otherwise looks kind of lame in this context. What has happened to Japan? I was counting on them to ski in some weird unique way but they just fit right in. Thanks again.

Thanks AJ - I have never seen so many super great skiers in one resort at once. Not even at the WC. Almost anyway ;) I cannot comment on ski ware or how everyone skies as there are so many great skiers from all delegations and clothing styles vary a lot. I personally like the worn out jeans imitations from Croatia I think. But syncro skiing is a bit different to normal skiing as movements need to be conveyed far back in the pack. Lots of up and down movement to make clear visuals all over the team. Lets wait for the technical demos :) Cheers, Tom

South Korea improved their skiing. They used to be in a leg locked skiing with a swivel that is reminiscent of mogul skiers. Japan though is still exhibiting this style. Overall the skiing was mediocre with most teams using a blocked pole plant with their rebound up unweighting. The arm motion was overly exaggerated. I realize that a pole plane used by racers is much different that a ski school pole plant as the ski school poleplant is used to time the turn and keep skiers in a solid foundation. Most disturbing was the hip position of most demonstrators. They seemed to push against the snow and have the knee/leg straighten out, then chatter. This comes from an inclined and not an angulated position. That inclination is not a stacked position from a lower body position where edge angles are greater and the ski is loaded. Overall...pretty skiing, but not high performance. I hope later sessions will show higher level skiing.

Well these aren't professional racers, they are leisure ski instructors, i think the way to "interski" is to have a perfect synchronization:)
@samyeoski Жыл бұрын
I think you missed the point of what the show run is. Its a choreographed ski with your team to accounce your country, kinda like an opening ceronmany. The skiers are constantly needing to adjust their line to stay in time with the people infront / move into avaliable gaps when doing crossing maneuvers, so not typical skiing. Their demo runs will come later
