The sections that remain with original alignment show you what 1930s highway engineers thought a modern high speed road should be like. It's the US's first significantly long limited access highway. 7:51 - Beginning a section opened ca. 1964 to bypass the Laurel Hill tunnel. The original tunnels were single tube with only one lane in each direction. One significant difference - the original highway had a 10-foot median with no barriers. K-rails were installed in the 60s (?), replaced by jersey barriers a few decades after that.

I wish it was wider in more urban areas - it’s too antiquated with two lanes in Philly and near Pittsburgh smh

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is such an underrated road to travel on. You've got city suburbs, river crossings, tunnels, mountains, farmland, and of course plenty of sceneries.

This road has become so expensive to drive, and it is under construction half the time. The dreaded Turnpike!😢😮
