Martinsville is where I 73 ultimately ends up after it dead-ends into 220 (never go to the visitor center there by the way). Winston-Salem is on there for 421. And most people who go downtown off 85 in Charlotte get off on NC 49/US29 or Graham Street, which is before the 77 interchange, so most downtown traffic has already exited.

In the original plan, I-77 was supposed to end at I-85 north of Charlotte. Wisely, they extended it to I-26 east of Columbia. The mistake was to route it near downtown Charlotte. So you get through traffic (including Canadians going to SC beaches), commuter traffic, and even local traffic near Lake Norman, all clogging up the lanes and getting in each other’s way. Adding toll lanes north of Charlotte has eased congestion, and at least giving you the option not to be in the middle of it. Plans are to add toll lanes south of downtown.

The Rocky Mount / Miami and Durham / Atlanta signage dates from the Richmond-Petersburg Parkway, when I-95 was solely intended as the fast way through for long-distance travelers who were paying a toll. With the tolls off and more local exits, the scope for far-off control cities decreases.

They have mentioned to extend I-85 from I-65 in Downtown Montgomery to I-20 & I-59 in Cuba Alabama which is about 3 miles east of Alabama/Mississippi state line. @timj684 I did a road trip last year that involved driving on I 95 from Richmond to Savannah, and that is at least triple the length of I 85 from the same point to Durham. None of the urban areas in either of the Carolinas (Rocky Mount, Fayetteville, Lumberton and Florence) provide any relief. I’ll admit that I where I live (Reno) has lots of surrounding rural areas, but at least here, the endless mountains provide some respite. Across two road trips I’ve done this year and last, outside of the Pacific side of the Continental Divide, I’d rather drive along I 10 between San Antonio and El Paso, in the mountains of New England and Pennsylvania, across Iowa (hillier than anything east of the 76/80 split in Nebraska), or even the Florida Panhandle (surprisingly hilly between Tallahassee and Crestview).

Hi Todd! At 4:00 When you say the far right lane is mainline 73, I thought "that doesn't sound right", with that 85 exit tab on the pull through sign (122A) there. I've driven that stretch many times so I looked at it myself in case I missed or didn't remember something. That lane begins on 85 before the interchange with US 220/I-73 south.. I-73 northbound traffic does cloverleaf up to that "feeder" road for about a mile where one can either to continue on 73/US 421 north or cloverleaf down to a parallel road along 85 to Groometown Rd. So yeah, I guess you can say in an oddity, that feeder road could be construed as mainline I-73 . The oddness is that any traffic that was northbound 73 that wants to the go south on I-85 has to to drive on two consecutive cloverleaves to exit at Groometown then straight through the light there to continue south on 85. That being said, if that lane is supposed to be a "mainline" 73, why does the exit tab correlate to 85 signage instead of I-73 signage indicating the exit for Groometown as exit 96 or 97? In my view, the exit numbering would be a bit confusing.

I was thinking of a better way to sign southbound I-85 not just primary control cities, but also cities for different routes. Observe.: •Durham, NC | >Raleigh, NC (Research Triangle) •Durham, NC (after paralleling US 1) •Greensboro, NC -High Point, NC | •Charlotte, NC (I'm fine for signing High Point, NC in this direction and I think I'll do the same with northbound since that city is a 3rd control city of the Piedmont Triad.) •Charlotte, NC •Spartanburg, SC •Greenville, SC •Atlanta •Montgomery, AL | >Columbus, GA (after the concurrency with I-75) •Montgomery, AL (skipping I-185 GA)

I would add Gastonia southbound. It’s bigger than Spartanburg, and in NC. It should’ve NEVER been signed northbound because Charlotte is so much bigger, a major league city(Hornets, Panthers), and over 850k people in the city alone.

Good ol' US 58. Know it well. Runs basically the whole Southside of VA, just N of the State line of NC. Also, don't tell a Burlington resident they live in a suburb, you might be itchin' for a fight!

@williamwells8563 I just think Alamance County is stuck in a no man’s land between Durham and Greensboro, where it can’t be considered a part of either metro.

This time, I don't justify signing Lexington. Charlotte by itself does the job well enough. (By the way, when I-85 Southbound leaves US 29 beyond Lexington, it signs "Salisbury/Charlotte" again, because of US 52. That's the only justification I'd make for signing Salisbury, however, because it's a junction point for US 52 traffic.)

So really 85 can get you from Richmond Virginia to La since you take i85 to i65 down to i10 at Mobile and i10 all the way to LA.....I think 85 could be signed Charlotte/Atlanta/Mobile after Durham......

Why skip Montgomery? State capital and it’s bigger than Mobile.
@truckercowboyed26382 жыл бұрын
@@ControlCityFreak yes I don't know why I skipped Montgomery,
@tylermarchand29962 жыл бұрын
@ControlCityFreak Actually, Mobile is bigger. 10k (Lowndes) + 55k (Autauga) + 85k (Elmore) + 230k (Montgomery) = 380k Montgomery metro. Meanwhile, 15k (Washington) + 415k (Mobile) = 430k Mobile metro. And I’m not even including the roughly 250k in Baldwin County (across the Mobile River and abutting the Florida state line (Pensacola). The OMB currently has Baldwin County as its own metro (Daphne-Fairhope-Foley), but it could very well become part of the Mobile metro if the OMB updates for the census…

@ControlCityFreak I always say that city limit population can be very misleading, which is why metro populations are what I take into consideration. They say more about how expansive an urban area is.
