Lebanon is one of only 10 cities in New Hampshire and is the home of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the only Level 1 trauma center, cancer research hospital, and pediatric hospital north of Boston. White River Junction isn't even an incorporated place, but it has a disproportionately high profile in the region because it actually is an important junction, being where key north-south, northwest-southeast diagonal, and east-west highways (I-91, I-89, US-4) come together, right in the center of the rectangle that NH and VT comprise. You wouldn't often hear a local mentioning Lebanon or Hanover in the same context.

That would be funny, but it would become an East-West interstate, so it’d have to be renumbered. I imagine it becomes 88, and then the 88’s that already exists would get renumbered. And the for it to go to Limon, I imagine the following (in this thought experiment, let’s pretend 89 stays despite its westerly direction rather than going for 88): From Concord, 89 makes its way to take over Eastern 84 in its entirety as it would be the most straightforward way to get through New England from NH. It has a concurrency with 81 until I-80, in which case it will go concurrent with 80 for a little until branching off again to head towards 76. It intersects 76 before Ohio so that it does not cross 80 again. From there it would stay between 80 and 70 for the remainder of its route, running right through the middle of Hennepin to have a short concurrency with I-180 in Illinois. That or I-180 now ends at I-89 which has now taken Hennepin. It would intersect 74 close to Peoria and crosses Iowa to get to Nebraska, where it goes southwest into Kansas and eventually its end at I-70 in Limon, Colorado.

So I know I89 almost as much as I know I87, which I travel the north most 100 miles a great deal. There is something interesting, when you get into Canada you wind up driving on surface roads for 10 or so miles because Quebec didn’t finish Autoroute 35 all the way to I89. They may in the future but they had to stop and build a brand new Champlain bridge over the St Laurence because the old one was close to failing. This would have made an ungodly mess. Quebec also wholesale copied our expressway shield and numbering system. It’s only Quebec, the other provinces have their own set ups.

New England is notoriously slow when it comes to transitioning from ordinal (or sequential) exit numbering to mileage-based numbering. Maine was one of the first New England states to transition (2004), followed by Connecticut (at least for I-91 and I-395 so far; the remaining interstates and state highways with exit numbers are reportedly slated to be re-numbered by 2025), Massachusetts, which only converted in 2021, and Rhode Island, which recently converted to milepost exit numbering (I-95 was completed a few months ago). So, this basically leaves Delaware, New Hampshire and New York State (save for I-99) as the last "sequential exit number" holdouts (depending on how you want to define Vermont's scheme).

I-89 was the first parent interstate that I have driven end to end. Also in regards to the exit numbers in Vermont, “Vermont reached an agreement with the FHWA in 2019 to use dual sequential/mile-based exit numbers. Under the approved plan, existing sequential exit numbers will be retained for at least the next decade, but a supplemental mile-based exit number will be added to each exit sign starting in the spring 2020. The agreement stipulates that Vermont must convert to mile-based exit numbers during the next round of sign replacements, planned for some point in the 2030s”. I figured that I-90 might be a 3 parter! I will be ready for it. If you do I-91 on February 16, then I will be there when you do an interstate that I am going to be close by and one of my hometown interstates.

I think as a whole, New England is more provincial regarding their towns than any other U.S. region, especially in the rural parts up north. As for the exit numbering, I don't think they will change anytime soon. It's the oldest civilized U.S. region and they're proud of it. Old money, old real estate, all of it.

I believe that if the Federal government threatens to withhold money for highway maintenance to those states that do not convert to mile-based exit numbers, we'll see either the highways, especially the bridges, begin to crumble, or tolls to suddenly crop up. It's too early to tell at this point. I know, the interstates are not supposed to have tolls if they were built with federal money. Some states have high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes, while a state like RI now tolls trucks only on most of its freeways.

If it took 3, Part 1 would at least have to go to Montana (maybe even Wyoming) if being divided by regions, and Part 2 would have to pass by Chicago, maybe going to the limits of the Eastern Time Zone. If it took 4 however, he could just divide it by time zone since I-90 goes through 4 of them.

@@markwilson4078 I disagree. Probably 3 maximum. 90 may be longer than 80, but it doesn’t have as much bad control cities or big cities. So probably all of EB I-90 would be about 15-25 minutes.
@markwilson40782 жыл бұрын
@@mxderateprod Yeah it doesn’t. In that case, 3 parts. If I remember what Todd said and did in past videos, he did 2 parts to Western 84 because of Oregon, and that interstate wasn’t even 1000 miles long. Having watched almost all of his videos (I-64 westbound was the only interstate video of his I never watched), I know he tends to point out points of interest that aren’t control cities, and there are plenty on I-90. Plus, I think in the comments for the I-80 video he mentioned he would wise up and split the interstate up. Even if the control cities were immaculate and on-point every step of the way, the sheer length of the road is just too long to condense into 2 parts when it goes through so many climates and scenery. Condensing the concurrency with 80 could help out, but I don’t think for long enough to make just 2 parts work.

It's a lovely drive, as someone who lived in South NH but travelled to Montreal often I have driven the entire route many times over. The landscape is idyllic and the towns along the route bucolic. As of now, I-89 routes to Route 133 in Quebec. 133 is a pretty, it goes through many farms as well as the village of Pikes Peak, but its absolutely not fit to carry the volume of travellers between the two cities of Boston and Montreal as its mostly a 2-lane countryside road. Fortunately Quebec has been extending Autoroute 35 southwards ever so slightly, I assume it will extend not quite up to the border but just far enough to connect to the 4-lane segment of Rt.133

For Interstate 189, once the Champlain Parkway is completed, Interstate 189 should simply number their interchanges as: EXIT 1 for US7 and EXITS 2A and 2B for Interstate 89. 189 would begin west of US7, making 189 a mileage-based exit numbering highway. Ordinal as well. The A and B over N and S for suffixes would satisfy the mileage-based exit numbering system customs. New Hampshire needs to go mileage-based on their exit numbering. New York is getting very stubborn again with this process and needs to wake up.

Vermont is buying time by putting up the milepost signs at exits; the state has indicated that it will consider renumbering exits when the signs are replaced in the future. New Hampshire may hold out longer: the governor was openly disdainful about the prospect of the feds forcing the state to do so. After all, the state's motto is "Live Free or Die." All the other New England states have completed renumbering or are in the process. New York isn't part of New England, but even it has quietly switched I-84 to mileage based exits, and probably will do so on I-81 when it's re-routed through Syracuse.
