What a mood. Beautiful video and music! I think I recognised the slowed down sailing puffin (?)

In the 70's, as a shaper, I had opportunity to observe all kinds of extremes of rounded bottoms and extra rocker'd bottoms and they all have advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of the rounded bottom is lack of top speed and acceleration. They gain ease of turning and a mid level efficiency in speed. This is difficult for some to comprehend, but the same arguement applies to foiled boards and even long boards; they have better mid range of efficiency without an effort from the rider. But, cannot be pushed to the limits of a flat bottom short board. Cheers

Hull or belly bottoms are better on longboards for that reason a dull or slowed response. As far as design extremes they have extreme results which usually feels odd

Does a top speed faster than the pocket of a wave really have to be reached? Isn't the ideal situation of a modified displacement hull to adjust and stay right at the speed of the wave?

You're right about hulls lacking in acceleration but they actually tend to excel in top end speed since they still have some amount of belly submerged in the water even when planing at higher speeds allowing them to build steady speed and maintain stability/hold. Flat and concave bottoms have far more acceleration from the get go but top out quickly since they just start chattering if you go beyond a certain speed since there is less board bottom submerged. It's the same reason why people say displacement hulls wrok so well on the high-line (the fastest part of the wave), since the bottom contour naturally fits to that curvurature while flat/concave bottoms naturally want to go down to the more slopey part of the wave.

@@bloblablah7409 For what it's worth, I found that reverse vee was good for stopping chatter in bumpy conditions and for good paddling ability; vee at the nose, flat at the tail.
