Or what I mean is, there was a niche for language and we evolved to fill it. That makes sense. But music just makes no sense at all. It's as close to pure magic as anything in a godless universe can get; differences in air pressure making you feel a certain way. There's no need for it, it's pointless, it serves no purpose, but it's the most exquisitely delicately arranged thing and it can transform your entire world for the duration of a song. It's a total mystery to me.

I usually have to be intoxicated before I can let myself listen to the soundtrack of Interstellar because if I don't, I'll end up bawling. One of the story's themes is abandonment of a child by its parent, something I experienced when I was 9 and my father left us one day and never returned. He decided he was tired of being married and tired of his children and felt we held him back from his true potential (he never did reach that potential, LOL) so he walked out. That was pretty rough on a child of my age, especially when nobody would tell me anything. So...yeah, the music to me rips the scab off that wound and it makes me cry every time.
