At first, I thought to myself; how incredible that this somewhat shy, quiet young person is the same as the one crushing on the comp walls. But then as the interview progressed it was clear where her strength comes from. What an incredibly determined, thoughtful and informed yet humble climber Ai Mori is! Als, big props to Akiyo for making her get more comfortable to speak her mind. I'm really excited to see how Ai will grow even more into herself as the years go by.

自分がクライミングを始めた25年前、こんな小柄で華奢な子が世界トップレベルになるなんて考えられなかった。 しかし、今回の五輪ではその常識を覆し、5.14後半ありそうな異次元のグレードをほぼ迷いなく最終ホールドまで到達……。 いい歳したおじさんクライマーにもかかわらず、最終地点では興奮して解説のユージ氏と同じく声が出てしまいました。 次回のロスでは、ぜひ世界の頂点に立って欲しい……。

13:54 Rewatching this a year later and Ai-chan has gotten 1st in Lead at the World Champs, 3rd in the combined, as well as one of the first three women to receive their olympic ticket to Paris 2024. Mori Ai was one of the first pro climbers that caught my eye when I started watching competitions and it's so great to see her improve and succeed.

あきよさん、あいちゃん対談ありがとうございました！ コロナ前くらいにクライミング始めて、コロナで登れてないときにyoutubeでコンペ見まくって、一番魅了されたのがあいちゃんでした。 動画から、あいちゃんはいつでも課題を登りたいってのが伝わってきて、ボルダーで登れない課題を、次の課題のために戦略的に切り上げずにギリギリまで課題にトライする姿勢にいつも尊敬します。 僕が印象に残ってるのも世界選手権のコンバインド予選のリードで、1位とらなきゃいけない状況で、下部で落ちかけてからリカバリーしたことがすごいなと思いました。 あとはCJCのリードでのいつも見ないフォールも印象残っていて、オリンピックの代表選考がもやもやしてる中で消滅した直後くらいの試合だったから、ボルダーも内容がいつもと比べて違ったし良くなかったから、少し精神的にきてるのかな？って動画越しに思ってました。 本人のみぞ知るところですが。。 (オリンピック代表自体は協会の解釈、判断なので選手にはなんの責任もないですし、選ばれた野中選手が活躍して銀メダル取ったことも素直に日本人として嬉しく思うので、他意はありません。誤解させてしまったらすみません。) これからも純粋に人生の中でクライミングを楽しんで、その途中での活躍を期待してます！ 日本女子はあいちゃんだけでなく、沢山期待される選手がいるので、皆んなで盛り上げて、皆んな活躍できるよう応援してます！！

Re-watching this before the Paris Olympics and after watching 2024 IFSC world cup Innsbruck in person. I talked to Ai chan and took a picture with her when I saw her observing lead routes in the crowds. It was after the bouldering semi, where Ai struggled to reach the W1 jump start. I was initially feeling that the semi W1 could affect her mental game (for any athletes really if they had the same experience), but then I felt Ai's assertiveness during my brief interaction with her, which made me super happy (Yes don't let these things define you!). Just want to say that Ai is one of the best climbers in the world, and from this video you can just tell her motivation to climb is so pure. Believe in yourself and your hard work will show in comps! Believe in your love for climbing and keep getting the tops! Gold in Paris or not, Ai chan is still Ai chan, with such a pure spirit to climb! We love seeing you enjoy every moment on the wall and express yourself to the fullest! Also want to say, Akiyo is such a legend with such a big heart. I love the way she empowers Ai chan. Respect.

遅ればせながらクライミングのワ－ルドカップを観ながら彼女の存在を知って辿り着きました。野口さんがメダルを見せるだけに留めた粋な計らいに感動するとともにアイちゃんのファンになりました。何より肉体の極限を競う競技の中で全ての筋肉と持久力、バランスに加えル－トを瞬時に見極める頭脳が必要な競技だけに彼女の活躍に目が釘付けとなりました。パリでの活躍は本当に楽しみですがアイちゃんが楽しめると自ずと結果が見える気がします。ただ、後、二年で肉体の成長の兼ね合いでの難しい戦いもあるのかとは思いますが是非、頑張って欲しいと思います。

After Ai chan got the bronze of Bern’s B&L, Akiyo posted photos with Ai and Miho in an IG story that quickly reminded me of this video - how Ai chan talked about the goal of going to the Olympics, and how she touched Akiyo’s medal. Big congrats to Ai chan that she got the ticket to Paris and also Akiyo becoming the commentator/reporter for climbing events. Looking forward to see Ai chan and Akiyo in Paris.

Im very new to this sport but i think i really became interested in it because of Ai and Akiyo san. The part at the end where Akiyo showed her medal to Ai and said that she wants Ai to win her own so theyre not taking a photo in it just made me tear up cause its so beautiful and you just know Akiyo really believes Ai can do it.
