There are good reasons why the Jesuits were so often forbidden in their history.

7:10 Superior General explicitly states that his fundamental vocation is not a priest, but a Jesuit. What does this mean hermeneutically? Does this mean social justice trumps spiritual sanctification? Is there a submerged iceberg of subtext to his sentence? Or am I reading too deep beneath the language, and this statement is merely a description of his role - a role accepted by the Pope since St. Ignatius founded the Society? I wonder, because immediately preceding this, the Jesuits were discussing how to ameliorate and rescue Venezuela from intolerable conditions. Is the Jesuit Order now a vehicle for Liberation Theology? St. James does say, "Weep and howl, you rich, for the miseries coming upon you!" I believe in social justice. But i believe in it within the community of Christ. Those outside the fold do not know anything of the love of God, so how can they love others as they have not been loved themselves? Fundamental work must remain in parsing definitions, in drawing lines of definition, and declaring light from dark in the world. We are not all cut from the same cloth, even if we all paddle in the same water from time to time. For one does not put new wine in old wineskins, or patch up old garments with new rags.
