Wow your videos are really informative and what I liked the most is how you improved the videos as the episodes went on like adding background music but thats besides the point hearing your story on how you went all this to help find what you wanted to do in college is inspirational im kinda in a limbo right know myself with whether to pursue 2d animation or other majors. Thx for this great series, it's so great to be able to follow your story and hard work. I'm only sorry I didn't discover it sooner. About suggestions for future videos. The thing I personally struggle with is maintaining the timeline clean so that it's easy to re time, re space parts when need be. I know I should always make a key for all parts of a character on all frames but somehow I always find efter animating a while I have keys all over the place. And it especially pertain to this topic of constraints. Meaning when I have some limb constraint to a prop and I move keys around the whole animation goes tits up (excuse the expression )as I start moving keys around. On my latest animation attempt I have the character morph/transform in the middle of the animation, and to even be able to access those controls you have to enter a special mode of the rig which make those keys not visible on the timeline after you go back to the regular mode. So same thing happens here, once I try to re time every thing goes bad as those keys for the transformations are not moved. I've love to show you the show I'm talking about and have a conversation about it someday if you have the time. So I'd like a tutorial on how to make sure we have selected all of the rig when we key? I start all animations by keying everything on the first frame. And there is something called character sets to use in Maya, but I don't feel confident how to use them? I know lots of rigs comes with a select all ctrls option and that we can make our own quick selection sets. So what I do is use either that or just marquee select all the nurbs curves in the rig making polygons not selectable. And create my own select all quick select button. But as I said somehow I get keys all over the place even though I do use that. And how do we offset things without ending up with keys all over the place? I find for instance when animating the extremities like fingers, feet controls etc I get a really messy timeline with keys everywhere. And after that fact how do I retime my animation? I've tried selecting all the keys and use the scale keys tool, but then I end up with keys between the frames. And when that happens, I know there is a snap keys to nearest frame option, but then I get keys on top of one another. It's not seen on the time line but sure is in the grapheditor. I'm sure you know what I mean by that. Again that is very prominent when using constraints. So maybe my problem is that I do the offset part to soon, meaning that I should perhaps make sure my animation has the right timing before doing that step? So a tutorial on blocking and passes would be great. When to do what basically. And I also regularly struggle with gimbal lock, so if you have some great tips on how to avoid that would also be great? Final question do you ever use the Dopecheet? I've asked many animators but very few seem to use it. I know there is a great tutorial by a very famous animators animating Moses and the 10 commandments on the stone tablets that uses the dopecheet extensively, I don't recall his name now though. That's a fun idea! Are you thinking longer real-time videos that take a ton of episodes, or a more time-lapse sped-up process to watch it happen throughout one video, showing iterations and playblasts throughout the process?

I think the sped-up version would be great. Kinda like this series, but the episodes could be Planning, Blocking, Blocking Plus?, Polish, or however you work. This is asking a lot, so don't worry about it if it's too much work. Woohoo!

These videos have been so helpful! As a junior in high school right now I'm trying to figure out what career I should pursue. Animation has come up a lot in my mind. I been doing a bunch of research on schools and the career it's self. Your story is good one and really gives that insider view of the process.

Sketchbookofhorror1 it’s only a beginner class in high school lol! i did learn a lot, it’s just that we didn’t learn as much as i wanted to. it’s just a little taste of maya! we only learned from an online article on how to use maya though. not really how to make animations (my teacher was very nice and encouraging, but he’s more of a US history teacher than an arts one) i plan on going to college and getting a degree in animation, so i’m glad i have a little experience in maya :D

Thanks for sharing your experience with us about your interview at dreamworks! One of my favourite studio! I always been curious about how would an interview in a big studio could look like.... also that Ik/fk game was cool! I sometimes struggle whether to use ik in blocking to make things fas or fk to avoid elbow pops.... and i understand even more now when to use both.. and even vombiming both is sometimes stressful is even better than try to do things with only one when the both are needed.. so i am going to keep this in mind a lot ( i actually saw your video about it too) i am a junior animator, studied at canada but for some reasons couldn’t stay there but i got a tjob recently so i really need to push myself and would love to go back.. but have lost motivations when my lead doesn’t have enough patience so i lost track and lay behind then sometimes is difficult snd i have tought i am not good at this... but watching your video got me realy inspired today! My project is a short animation of 1 min but I don't know how to rig, I'm trying to learn how to rig the body but I only need the upper part of the body (hands and arms) and the face because I want my character to have different expressions. Good question! I think it was just a fluke, I probably could have made sure the file was in dropbox or google drive or something for good measure.. But it ended up working out to my benefit since it helped me show grace under pressure- so I'm SO happy everything went wrong!!

There's sometimes a quality difference, usually due to the amount of time that available for the artists to work on the project before release, and sometimes some technical differences with mocap or cycle animations but all the same principals still apply!

Questions! (I have many...) 1. Is storyboarding a job? Like a whole job? Or is that just a step in the process? Do they hire someone to storyboard and then someone else to design characters and someone else to model them and someone else to rig them and someone else to animate them, or does one person do it all? 2. Is there a lot of rotation of workers? I feel like I kind of see the same names for producers and directors and it scares me into thinking there's only a job open once somebody dies or quits. Is this the case or does every new movie or project open new opportunities for people? 3. Was it more important in your application that you did animation mentor or that you portfolio of work was good? Is it where you go or what you make? 4. What's your job like? Do you actually do any animation or are you always just teaching other people how to? Is it where you want to stay? 5. How do you move up in the company? Say go from animator to supervisor of animation or something. Would this involve simply applying for jobs within the company or is it based on seniority or...? 6. The estimated median salary for an animator is usually around 60-65k online. Is it way more than that at Dreamworks because it's such a big brand name? 7. Do you think a master's degree in film would be good to get before or after gaining job experience? (say you go to college, should you do all 6 years at once or finish your 4, get a job, and see about getting a master's degree once you're ready to advance career-wise). 8. Do you know how to be come a director, producer, or art director? Degrees/ Starting from the bottom/ what is the bottom/ how to move up/ ect. 9. What growth would you like to see for yourself at Dreamworks?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS! You are a great teacher! Some ideas for future videos: - I am really interested in different approaches to the blocking process of a scene. There are many videos showing this process, the sad part is that they are always short and fast forward lots of details. It would be amazing if you could share a long video or a live where you gave tips about blocking, keys and breakdowns step by step. - Cool ways to use MEL scripts or little code tricks specifically good for anim. - Applying constraints, aim and orients to rigs so that, for example a tail, follows a motion path or we can alter rigs in interesting ways to give them some physics (there is a video that I loved but I can´t fully catch up with his tips vimeo.com/297804505 they are amazing!). - I was animating a walk cycle where the character then stops or walks slower and then gains back the speed he had. I´ve always wondered if I can get through this with anim layers but sadly no one seems to be able to help me with this... Congratulations on your job at DreamWorkssss! Keep it up ;)

I want to know about the team work in dreamworks. What is it like? And do they still use the apolo program for animating?

They do still use Apollo- Really the software's name is Premo but they called the technology "Apollo" when it was created :) It's the BEST animation software- I wish it were available at home!

Wow, you look like you are so confident for those interviews, how do you stay calm? I have to present some art projects for my degree and i just keep having panic attacks, i would really love some advice

For me, it helps to try to use humor when things are at a neutral point, to try to get people (and myself) comfortable in the situation, and I really just try to remember that I am where I'm supposed to be in the moment, and that whatever I do is what will happen. Like, at whatever time you're feeling stressed, just know that in another hour or so it will have been completed, and I find that comforting! That time will go on and all I have to do is to try my best so that in an hour I can say "well I did everything I could do, and that's all that I could have done" For me, those things help me stay calm and grounded :)

I recommend Maya for character animation- you can get it for free with a student license and it's the industry standard tool

1) I actually never finished regular school to get a degree, I left to join Animation Mentor- which is more of a vocational trade school with a certificate at the end, but it's not a degree. In the animation industry though, it's not going to be any sort of a hindrance since everything is based on your ability to do the work 🙂 2) the work environment at DreamWorks truly feels like a college campus. The level of community and open communication between everyone from interns to directors and Executives is incredible. It's fast-paced and highly skilled, with everyone learning and growing every minute of the day. But it's also a place to have fun and stay fresh among an ever growing and evolving industry. 3) I think the most important thing is to be authentic and genuine. To show Who You Are personally, because your resume and cover letter will help convey who you are professionally. People want to make sure you're able to do the work, but those skills can be taught! As long as you show promise, talent, and a passion to learn and grow- everyone would be more concerned whether you're a nice person and fun to work with. So be confident! If you get to a point where you're interviewing at a studio, you have something to be proud of, and if you haven't gotten there yet- you have a goal to strive for and tons of people in the industry willing to help you achieve it! Did you live near dreamworks at the time of the interview? I'd have to fly out to interview... I feel like being out of state puts me at a huge disadvantage. What do you think? Knowing what the recruiters are looking for? Is having to wait a month or few weeks to relocate an issue? Thanks!

Business casual is always a safe bet :) I think I wore a nice short-sleeve button-up and slacks, belt, nice shoes. You don't need to show up in a tuxedo or a tie usually in animation, but you want to make a good impression and show you care.

Here in Holland you get sent somewhere to work as a volunteer but for school. I have no idea if that's the same in America. Anyway, I was thinking if I could in some miraculous way, work as a volunteer forced by school in DreamWorks. I saw on the website you guys love students coming there, but would I be able to? I'd love to know!

Ok, I've never even hear of IK/FK stuff, I guess I've seen it before, but didn't Know what it was (I'm still pretty new to animation) and I actually understand it!... Wait which one was IK again? How are you supposed to remember which is which? Or is it one of those things that you never need to actually know the name of?
