We go behind the scenes on GHOSTBUSTERS : FROZEN EMPIRE with director Gil Kenan who chats to us about putting the original Ghostbusters team from 1984 back on the big screen.
Director Gil Kenan who takes over the directing reigns from Jason Reitman is a British-American filmmaker. He is best known for directing the films Poltergeist, City Of Ember, Monster House, A boy called Christmas, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Scream The TV series. He is also a writer on the upcoming SNL 1975.
In Ghostbusters Frozen Empire Gary (Paul Rudd) and his partner Callie (Carrie Coon) have moved to New York to take over the ghostbusting business along with kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace). Now based in the firehouse, they have plenty of business but still catch the ire of Mayor Peck (William Atherton). A mysterious artefact comes into their possession that holds the key to an ancient evil which has the power to freeze over the city and exert influence over other ghosts. It's time to suit up with the OGs - Ray (Dan Akyroyd), Winston (Ernie Hudson) and Peter (Bill Murray) to save the world once more from certain doom...
It's been four decades since Ivan Reitman's original 1984 Ghostbusters was unleashed on the world. It was a near-perfect blend of comedy and horror that delved into the creepy and absurd but in the most imaginative and raucously amusing way. Since then, there have been four other films in the franchise of variable quality - yes, including the unfairly-maligned female-led 2016 reboot which Hollywood seems to have forgotten about in a hurry. The fifth entry in the franchise Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire adds further fuel to the fire that lightning can only be captured and bottled once in a movie's lifetime. Try as it may to combine the new blood of the Spengler family and the spark of the original 80s team, it can't quite recapture the magic that came well before it. It's just another middling Ghostbusters reboot/sequel/whatever.
Taking over the director's megaphone from Jason Reitman is his buddy Gil Kenan, who previously wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Kenan is no stranger to making his own tributes to 1980s cinema, having made Monster House and the long-forgotten Poltergeist remake. Kenan is back on writing duties as well here, along with contributions from the late Ivan Reitman. Kenan's softer touch is evident in his writing and direction which introduces elements like a friendly ghost girl that Phoebe interacts with, suggesting to the latter what it might be like to be a ghost (hint: it mostly sucks).
