Another fantastic chat with Micheal B 💜 I was so lucky to meet Micheal at Bunkers Bar in June 1995 after an impromptu appearance by Prince, with the Combo ( on KZbin!) I was there all the way from Australia, and Micheal gave me one of his drumsticks 🥁 and I still have it! It has all the dents in it just to show how hard Micheal hits those drums! 💜😊 He has great insight into Prince's career and yep, he was Prince's best drummer amongst the best musicians 💜💜💜

Michael it's always a pleasure seeing you, thanks for your time. I remember years ago I saw a interview with Rosie Gains saying she recorded around 5 albums with prince. It's hard to understand why prince didn't release them, he let her sing 3 songs that he wrote, and she sounded so good. Love her voice. Thanks Mr. Christopher, and Michael.

My favorite drummer. And I agree with not releasing the documentary. As curious as we might be, Prince was magic to many of us. Releasing the documentary will spoil the magic. He is already remembered as a an amazing musician and artist with the greatest shows in the world. No need to change that

Great interview. For the record : the moan in « My Name Is Prince » is not by Kim Basinger. It is a sample from Indeep's 1983 "When Boys Talk". It was used previously by numerous acts before including Tony! Toni! Toné!'s 'Feels Good' in 1990. The moan in “Peach” is different and is actually a sample of Kim’s contribution on “Soul Psychodelicide”.

Michael B is always a great interviewee; really interesting. I'm glad he said no to the Netflix doc. I wish they had gotten a director for whom this was a genuine passion project. Look at how well Peter Jackson's Get Back turned out. There are aspects of that film that show how the various relationships within the band were evolving (perhaps even devolving), but it's mostly about watching the Beatles at work, developing their songs. Prince was a private person, I don't think we need a warts and all movie about him. There's a treasure trove of live audio and video with which you could construct a fascinating narrative focusing on his career and his creative process.

Great show as always . To touch base on the end of the show. I think the documentary should come out. I'm hoping it would show what a musical genius he was. It would bring new fans to his Purple Magic. Unfortunately, when u are in this business it comes with the territory. People will want to know your business. Prince was such a historic figure that of course you are going to make a movie, documentary, or whatever 💜💜💜

Great interview! My problem is the TIMELINE: I am 53 years old. Symbol album came out in my last years in the Army - not when I was nine...

Michael was DEAD ON THE MARK regarding his comments on Questlove. Questlove has repeatedly impressed me with his musical knowledge. He seemingly knows subtle basslines, keyboard bits that most would never even hear but he claims that he was unaware of his hero's 90s output? Sure, i'd get it if he were talking about the 1997-2000 era but we're talking about the 1990-1995 era which was supreme... Also, sorry to add, what has Quest love done that is half has good?

Michael is fun to listen too. He is naturally smart. Prince played pretty much in the same keys and I imagine this made it easier to improvise and add parts.

Michael B: “I don't trust impartiality in documentary film making” No one: “Yes, Michael, you're right. I was about to be criminally convicted in court the other day and the judge disregarded the damning evidence against me, because he knew me.”

Loved Mike's position on the documentary. Agree 100% with all of his points. Glad he backed out of the interview. Zakia is right: Duvernay's vision for the film seemed a lot more fact based and less subjective. My only disappointment in this interview is he has yet to divulge what happened when they were filming the video for "I Wanna Melt With U."😁

@jayandgem17 сағат бұрын
I don't think Questlove had a problem with the NPG. Ultimately, if we had to delete Prince’s catalogue and keep only 10 songs. None of them would be from the 90s. Yes, Michael B is right that it was a tough time for Prince in the 90s. But post-Lovesexy, is not golden-era Prince and that has nothing to do with race.
@85918Ай бұрын
I love the crazy comment LOL
@jayandgemКүн бұрын
Post-Lovesexy, Prince was no longer a trailblazer; trying to go hip-hop was corny.
@lisametheny2243Ай бұрын
I think certain fans and or musicians etc, being resistant to changes in music is pretty much a personality flaw in some people. The inability to pivot and open your ears to focus, and appreciate the new, is a sign of a rigid person unable to evolve musically, which is their loss, and it feels like being unappreciated to the musicians.
@jayandgem17 сағат бұрын
Questlove does not critique the NPG's unquestionable musicianship. No one cares how technically sound the band is if the songs aren't as strong. Questlove didn’t rate the NPG-era songs and sonics as much as Prince’s earlier work. Prince's being sonically raw and “weird” made him unique; once he started including hip-hop, clean recording, and modern R&B, it sounded derivative and no longer innovative. You can talk up your work, but the music speaks for itself. Technically, the NPG would destroy the Beatles, but it’s the music that's timeless. There are many highly trained and technical musicians for whom history cares little. Music is not a sport.

Questlove WISH he was as good as Michael Bland as a drummer. I would love to see Michael make him crawl into a hole with a drum off. In my opinion Questlove is the most boring drummer ever. Yeah EYE SAID THAT!!!
@Steve-mp7byАй бұрын
Great interview. I have to defend Questlove he's the real deal and probably the biggest Prince fan on the planet. Music is too subjective and everybody is not going to like everything an artist does. Nobody can argue the fact Prince's greatest music is from the Revolution era. It is what it is. The problem is when Prince moved into Paisley his sound changed dramatically when he started recording on those SSL consoles. His sound became too clean and sterile and he lost his edge. There were too many electronic components in the signal path and the mastering was way too loud with no dynamic range. This is a case of when less is more. Then he tried to incorporate modern hip hop and sampling into his music and it didn't work. He blamed Warners for not promoting his music when nobody liked it except the hardcore fans. Michael will always be the greatest drummer he ever had
@rickstraws92Ай бұрын
He’s the most famous Prince fan. Idk about biggest. And music is subjective. Somebody clearly liked it and plenty still do

“it didn’t work” clearly did as quite a large amount of fans love this album and everything post Paisley build. The sampling absolutely did work, he was sampling back in 85 too and no one was complaining then. Interesting 🤔🤔🤔
