Interview of Former New IFB couple Nathan and April Marquis - Stedfast Baptist of OK City

Күн бұрын

Recently we had the privilege of sitting down to speak with Nathan and April Marquis, former members of a New IFB church. Nathan shares his experience of being excommunicated by pastor Jonathan Shelley, who was not satisfied with the sincerity of his apology for statements made on social media. We consider the unbiblical nature of this display of pastoral "authority", as well as the marks of a cult which are evident in the New IFB Movement. We also look at how the New IFB condemns nearly every other Christian group as being "unsaved", yet another mark of a cult. Nathan and April discuss their experience with the Mennonite and Amish of Pennsylvania during a recent vacation, and finding true believers among them. We encourage others in the New IFB, or any other extremist group, to consider the unbiblical, controlling nature of the movement and get out. A portion of the conversation between Nathan and Pastor Jonathan Shelley is included at the end of the video.
We also announce our hiatus from You Tube, as the busy summer season and responsibilities force us to back off from video production. Much has been said and taught about regarding extreme Fundamentalism on this channel, and the material will remain on You Tube for the benefit of those searching for a way out and recovering from the experience. Those wishing to contact pastor Dollar may do so at jeffreybdollar@yahoo.com. The church web site is Cbcportage.org.

I have been an IFB in the past. There was a REAL lack of love and militancy in the atmosphere. I fed into it 100%. Thankfully that church, now, though IFB in name, has calmed down a lot and I dont even think they fellowship much with other ifb churches that often. They're crazy, and given my personality bent, I dont need that influence.

Not biblical Christianity? Because of drama? The Apostles had lots of drama sir. Peter and paul had a confrontation! Paul went to prison! There will be plenty of drama among true churches teaching the Bible as it will clash more and more with the culture! Your statement is ridiculous.

@Saved by Grace Jesus went and tore apart a synogogue! He called rabbis Satanic. He also took time to make a whip that he used in the synogogue. Talk about drama! Very Christ like drama. He mocked the rabbis when Jesus called a woman a dog. This statement was made to mock them, as that was how they referred to the gentiles.he flouted there own laws in the synogogue by deliberately breaking thier laws of the Sabbath, right in the temple. He told his disciples that he spoke in parables on purpose, so the people wouldn't understand! He was always very dramatic and confrontational when addressing false doctrine. I love the the way Steven anderson did this when confronting Catholic doctrine for instance. When he mocked thier long robes and digon God hat by parading around in a costume, it was great! From what I know of Jesus, He loved it too! You might have felt uncomfortable however. Oh well.

I grew up in a IFB church and am so grateful to God that I’m no longer part of that wackiness. Very man centered idolatry. It’s really really sad. Only church I ever went to where the staff would drive the pastors car up to the front door when the service was done. Never understood the knocking on doors “ soul winning” when the most unfriendly people I ever met inside the church, could go out and try and win souls “invite people to church” Everything that I ever experienced within the IFB was so strange. For those caught up in this cult like religion, I would just say read your Bible and pray for discernment. Grace and the peace of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ be with you

The NIFB, at least pastor Anderson has never claimed that they’re the only ones that have the gospel, he even says nondenominational churches often have it right, and encourages people to go to a good church in there area, it doesn’t have to be NIFB or even ifb. I’m not surprised that the fame is getting their egos blown up, but my experience in the NIFB has been positive. I love the hard preaching and the family integration in the churches, which the old ifb lacks. I’ve also never felt I HAD to agree with them that every homo is reprobate. I’ve heard multiple of the pastors in the movement say they believe someone could be confused and wrapped up in the LGBTQ movement without being reprobate. And they make it clear you don’t have to agree with that doctorine to be a part of their church. So a lot of these accusations seem to be false, or at least missing a lot of context.

@@jeffdollar1646 yeah I’ve seen, still not really convinced you’re portraying their teachings fairly. Grant it, they don’t really portray their opponents fairly either but I don’t find this to be something unique to NIFB, but something I’ve experienced from most people in general. Seems like neither side can give an accurate portrayal of what the other believes and everyone is fighting straw men. The only one I’ve dealt with irl is Aaron Thomson and it was a positive experience 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m open to being wrong about them. Just looking for the truth. The one thing I’ve seen that has been concerning is Anderson not having any real ordination. Gives Joseph smith vibes if true. And the whole situation with Shelly is giving me pause.

Here is a little tidbit from a commentary on the book of Hebrews by A. W. Pink - regarding those who peddle in false doctrines and their method of excluding others who do not follow them: "Those who would impose such doctrines on others, generally do so with much bombast and blustering; unless we believe and practice such things, we are denounced as heretics and unsaved (Acts 15:1). The unlearned and unstable are disturbed by them, carried out of their course, and are in danger of making shipwreck of their faith." (An Exposition of Hebrews page 1166).

Again, exactly how am I preaching another gospel? In this interview I gave an example of presenting Christ to a lost man. The problem from what I see is the failure to recognize the nature of Regeneration. That provides the power to live a holy life, overcome temptation, and be free from the bondage to sin. That is the New Heart of Ezekiel 36, of flesh replacing the one of stone. A new heart on the inside will be evident by a changed life on the outside. Is that the other gospel you're talking about?

As far as the Reprobate Doctrine goes, I agree with my pastor when he says, "A Reprobate will do all of those things in Romans 1, but doing those things in themselves doesn't make you a reprobate. Rejecting God makes you reprobate." So I agree that there are confused people among the "LGBT Community" who are _not_ reprobate. Though unless it's to get them saved, I wouldn't want to be around them
@jeffdollar1646
@jeffdollar1646 4 жыл бұрын
There are indeed "reprobates", those rejected by God, but they generally are not the same people Anderson refers to. The Bible speaks of a sin unto death, Jesus taught of a sin against the Holy Spirit, so we do see there is some basis for writing some off. But if one uses the list in Romans 1, that would mean everything from idolatry, sexual immorality, down to envy would gave to be included. Rather, it appears such is limited to those who sin against truth with their eyes wide open, and the Spirit leaves them to their own devices. Hebrews warns that such as turn from the faith in such a manner cannot be renewed. So Anderson and his cronies, with all their bluster against the Sodomites, are way off on this teaching as well.

Sin entered the world through Adam but we are not personally guilty of Adam's sin. That is what Anderson stated is the Catholic doctrine of "Original Sin", which gives way to baby baptisms. Whereas to be saved, you have to 1) have sinned 2) know Right from Wrong, and thereby know you have sinned 3) comprehend the Gospel and believe it. Babies can do none of those things. They are alive without the Law, until the Commandment comes, and Sin revives. - Surely you know this, but I'm just saying that's how I understand Pastor Anderson's perspective on the matter of "Original Sin"
@jeffdollar1646
@jeffdollar1646 4 жыл бұрын
The very first part of your post, "we are not personally guilty", identifies this teaching as "Pelagianism". That emphasized that the child was therefore a blank slate, or actually "innocent" of sin until actually committing it. And he commits it in actuality, not because he is corrupt and prone to it, but because of his bad environment. Anderson may not be a complete Pelagian, but he certainly goes further than modern semi-Pelagians. Two problems with this position: if there is indeed a corruption in the infant that eventually leads it to sin, does God overlook that inherent corruption to allow such an infant into the perfect state of heaven? Secondly, why do infants die? I visit a grave that contains my older brother, who never saw the light of day - died before he was born - he was under the curse of death, though "innocent". No, there is indeed an inherent guilt which brings the curse of death, at the very moment of conception. I deal with this in another video on infants who die. Because of the nature of God, we believe He saves such babies, but He does so the same way He saves anyone else - through the blood of Christ. Anderson and other Arminian-leaning teachers have a hard time with that, because obviously the baby can do nothing, it cannot believe or call on the name of the Lord - but biblical theology teaches that regeneration is a work of the Spirit and as the wind does what He wants - and can enter the womb of a mother and effect His work. We saw that in John the Baptist, who rejoiced in Messiah even as a babe in the womb. That does not negate faith and repentance, for that will certainly come as soon as child is able to comprehend. BUT - if we are going to teach infant salvation, it must be this way or we enter the realm of heresy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6bKkmeVeMahhLc kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX7HfHl8jJuqa8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4m9p6ymrst_aJY

@@Moodamage I believe that babies, like all children of Adam, deserve to go to Hell because of their inherent corruption. However because of the nature of God, I believe He makes provision for then in Christ. Not having actually violated the law, and given no opportunity to repent and believe the gospel, I believe God provides for them to go to Heaven. Or if a member/former member who has 1st hand knowledge wants to weigh in, please do so. *1* How long has this couple been saved? A number of things lead me to believe that they're young in the faith. *2* How many people show up Sun AM/PM & to the mid week services? *3* They have a large family by most people's standards & they also are very young. What's a 10yr age range be for members of the church? What percentage of folks in the church or let's say over 55 or so, and the general makeup as far as age goes? *4* Of however many show up to the services each week, is there a large # of families made up of 5 or more, or are there a good number of single people? If you've got 40 people attending & 12 family units, that's different dynamic than if you had 20 couples. Quite a bit to learn from hearing their background that they lightly touched on towards the end of the video.

@@cameradollies18 I am not a calvinist (Pastor Dollar claims to be) but I agree with you that Pastor Dollar is a sincere man who is doing these videos out of his conviction and care for others who were part of the cult - not a vendetta against the nifb. The difference is that a calvinist does not really believe in free will when taking the ideology to it's logical conclusion. I have some family that is calvinist and they constantly re-iterate the talking points like a politicial rival - and always use the armenian strawman argument when there are so many passages to in the bible to destroy the calvinist doctrine. They will tell me that if one verse that can be taken out of context supports calvinism then that's all they need. Some have a hard time dealing with Heb 2:9 and they want to claim Paul did not write it. I will acknowledge that many calvinists can be dedicated christians, but one thing that has stood out to me is it alleviates their own self-guilt from how their children turned out (being unbelievers) under their care and guidance.

i hope your not going to judge the book by its cover because my IFB church is NOTHING like this! I am open to question my pastor privately and do so. Sometimes we disagree. Fellowship is amazing. Nothing is tallied. Deacons are Godly humble men. We are poor but very rich. I can guarantee you that every single denomination has churches that are corrupt like this some denominations more than others. So I have no idea what your point is by this interview. The only point that I could really glean from this is saying don’t go to that church specifically but don’t you dare say don’t go to independent fundamental Baptist churches because, that would be wicked. It’s everybody’s personal choice where to go and you shouldn’t be trying to influence them and making them be stereotypical when they’re thinking forcing that upon them like Satan.

If that is the case regarding your church, then this was not directed at them. Each IBF church is different and represent different strains of influence. Those influenced by Hyles, Ruckman, or the Sword of the Lord are the primary focus of this interview. There are some errors within the movement that need to be confronted - such as the serious error of denying repentance from sin in the gospel, or making unbiblical demands such as KJV only that are signs that a church is falling into this category, at least to some degree.

At the last bit where Pastor Shelly is confronting Nathan about agreeing that pastor Shelly was a loser and that he was beating a dead horse was wrong! no one should call their Pastor a loser or even agreeing that he was one behind their backs non the less! That's wicked and the weird thing is that Nathan is sorry for offending him?? but at the same time fail to see or admit that he was in the wrong by agreeing that pastor Shelly was a loser or beating a dead horse?? even know Pastor Shelly was giving him so much chances to apologize! anybody in their right mind can see That Pastor Shelly was in the right. All this is is that the man had too much pride to admit that he was in the wrong because my guess is that he thought his manhood was a stake! judging by the level of dominance Pastor Shelly was projecting toward him in the voice recording. Nathans can forget about his manhood at that point! Hahaha but the sad thing is that he really should have measured himself as a man before agreeing to very wicked things behind pastor Shelly back and not think Pastor Shelly was gonna correct him on it ...??? I enjoy your videos Jeff. I am not a member of an IFB church. This couple are not very articulate people. I do not mean to be unkind. Based on their own comments and history, they seem to keep "jumping from the frying pan, into the fire". I assume they (and you) understand the Amish treat their defectors the same way as the IFB does. They "disown" them. Why in God's name would you go from a solid, biblical ministry like Greg Laurie's Harvest Chapel to some nut jobs like Steadfast? Was there NO non-denominational ministry in Oklahoma when you moved? If a ministry says "independent-fundamental-kjv only" on their sign or website, that should be an automatic red flag! That should tip you off the church will be filled with drama, personality centered, pastor dictator, legalistic and angry. I grew up in it, the first 20 years of my life. My best friend and I spent all kinds of time together and spent time in and out of church together. He graduated and went to Hyles-Anderson college in 1977. I visited him one weekend. I got a bad feeling in just 2 days. After that, HA convinced my friend he was a "preacher boy" and I wasn't. He drifted away and our friendship ended. It grieves me to this day. It was almost 'cultish'. Keep up the good work Jeff.

Hello Ken, glad the videos are of help - I have discussed the issue of the Amish with this couple, and since then have had personal experience and met others in from the Amish the community which verified what you have said. Sadly, for the most part, the Amish are as far from the true gospel as the pope. Their are remnants among them which have come to the knowledge of the truth, but they soon find themselves on the outside looking in. Those of us living in the same communities as the Amish recognize that though they put on a holy, separated appearance, they are sinners like everyone else. .The lifestyle is very attractive to some, but the spiritual side of it is quite detrimental. Nathan and April have been on a spiritual journey for a while, and I really can't answer for some of the past decisions they made or why they made them. I am glad, however, that they were able to get out of the church they were in and I hope they are heading in a more biblical direction. I understand the situation with your friend - I was at HAC and FBC from 1979 to 1984. People on the outside are much more able to recognize the cultish nature of the group than those on the inside. Is really does disrupt families and ruin friendships, unless the Lord in His mercy intervenes and delivers those involved.

Thanks Jeff. Enjoy and appreciate your reasoned, biblical response. It sets you apart from some other "KZbin IFB" channels. So glad you spoke with the couple regarding the Amish belief system, before they may have been drawn into their community. The Amish and the NIFB have a number of similarities oddly enough. I carried the weight for a number of years of being 'rejected' because I wasn't "preacher boy material" according to Hyles Anderson. I knew all the "approved" Independent Fundamental colleges at the time. Hyles, Midwestern (Tom Malone), Tennessee Temple, Pensacola, Maranatha etc etc. God had other plans for me, and it turned out well. Praise God. Thanks again brother.

Growing up IFB (missionary parents) and later exposure to renegade pastors such as Doug Phillips, Doug Wilson, Michael Pearl pushed me into the Catholic Church. In a nutshell I came to believe that if we are to reform the Church from the inside, we may as well begin at the beginning. We have our real problems. But the structure IS there for checks and balances. It's not always properly utilized but everyone knows what it is. The laity do have recourse, a voice, and leverage. In fact I've been in parishes where priests were admonished, corrected, and reporrted to the archdiocese for teaching incorrectly, and many times it's by converts bc we tend to know the Scriptures more thoroughly. But I've even heard cradle Catholic old ladies be like "yeah Fr Brandon....bless his heart....lol" Just bc a priest says it, gives it very little authority in a Catholic church. It really reigns their ego in unless they get a KZbin channel lol. The Magisterium is the authority, and even Pope's can't change it. I'd rather deal w a renegade Pope in Rome who has no power to materially change the doctrine, than an out of control tyrant behind my pulpit. Even though Sunday mass attendance is REQUIRED as a tenant of the faith, nobody checks up on you, pressures you....they consider you a free agent and an adult. That's between you and God unless you cause public scandal with unrepentant sin. There is zero micromanaging. Not on dress standards, music, diet, who you date, movie attendance, etc. The priest may address some of these issues from the pulpit if he's a good priest, but I've been in IFB services where individuals were called out by name and humiliated in the congregation. I am very happy where I am!!! Even in the face of sexual scandal, a corrupt hierarchy, political machinations etc. The gates of hell shall not prevail. I do have just one correction for the brother regarding Martin Luther. The church has absolutely not sainted him! 😆 There is no feast day for Luther on our liturgical calendar. However in recent remarks and also interfaith conferences, it has been admitted that some of the issues, not all, leading to his excommunication were over doctrinal semantics, so to speak. That the current understandings of some things are closer than it appeared at the time. Things possibly could have been ironed out had political leaders not gotten involved w their separate agendas using Luther as a pawn.

The issue here is not the personality of Nathan Marquis, but the treatment he received from a man who was supposedly his overseer. His great sin was simply agreeing that the pastor was spending too much time and effort attacking his predecessor. There was never any real spiritual guidance or oversight from this man, but as soon as a remark was made "attacking" him on social media, he was pounced upon. Then the demand was made that he basically bend over and kiss the guys ring in a humiliating, forced apology - which Nathan was man enough to reject. So he is then cast out of the church, along with the acting pastor, simply for agreeing with a social media comment. Everything about the Hyles legacy - including the NIFB - smells of heresy, scandal, and tyrannical pseudo-preachers who have not the love of Christ in their hearts.
