I have fond memories as a young lad seeing his cultured left foot kissing the ball in the air to Ernie and others on a plate with a diagonal cross. I was usually right behind him in the Compton St end. Sublime. Not sure he would survive in today’s game but defenders (and managers) have plenty to learn from defenders who did just that and hardly ever got beyond the halfway line. Four at the back isn’t very trendy but effective. Teams are built on defence

Listen to the podcast by PT. A bit of an eye-opener about football in his era (I’d like to hear the unofficial off camera version though) but no surprises overall. As usual great knowledge by the interviewer who was there when I grew up with town. My view that Arthur Cox was the best manager we’ve had was reinforced, a pity that our current benefactors weren”t around at the time to make the most of our best ever team, rather than sell them off. Big miss due to our club being skint (at the time I’d put this down to a lack of ambition and rightly or wrongly I refused to go to games for years after our near miss promotion). Blackburn at home still gives me nightmares when I think of what might have been. Who knows where we would have been today but either way it’s an eye-opener about how football clubs have been run and how in comparison they’ve evolved over the years both on and off the pitch. Very enjoyable

Sean Shuffle. Always gave him the space needed to cross.
