I served from 2002-2005 with the 58th RQS at Nellis AFB. PJ squadron was activated and I was blessed to be one of the first airman in the Aircrew Life Support section (now known as AFE). I deployed with my squadron alongside our sister squadron 66 RQS to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Those three years were the best of my entire career. We are not the sexiest group of the bunch in the Air Force, but the mission is second to none. Pararescue and rescue personnel are amazing. Thank you Mover for giving some love to CSAR. CW and the JG pilot - you guys are my heros! The flying that the Jolly greens(PJs) HH-53 and Air commandos did in SEA 1965-1972 was one of most dangerous missions in the history of USAF, rarely covered by media so not many know about those guys. Loses for the airwing equipment was around 40% deployed , I just finished reading a letter from the leader of the Jolly Greens to my dad, an A-1 pilot in the 602nd that flew Sandy missions 69-70, about the lose of an entire crew. A whole crew gone. It seems a mig had sliped in and got one the HH-53s with a missle, a devastating loss no less it drives home the level of threats those guys faced. Dad loved the JG it seems, and the Sandy Job - ...The book "Sandy One" is going to blow your socks off, get ready for the great CSAR of the sky coming home this holiday 2020. And I am interested in developing a DCS:Module:South East Asia module with A-1H, A-1E, OV-10,HH-53 with a working Ho chi min trail, dyamic CSAR missions in DCS would be a riot.

These are the guys that would come to my rescue! Huge respect. Also, most of the best Hurc pilots I’ve know over the last 22 years had a great sense of humor and knew how to prioritize the mission.

Great interview,Search and Rescue is that pull, that instinctive drive to save someone`s life and risk yours over all adversity, hard to put into words that feeling,it is a drive that is innate in you,you go without thought of peril and do what you have to do,you are definitely an adrenaline junkie, can`t help,it,your life rhythm is beating at a different level.I worked ER/Trauma for years and got to fly a couple of missions, had I to do it all over again,S&R would be it,thanks for this wonderful interview Mover, your guest was really fascinating, very knowledgeable ,,onward and upward ,and both of you, again I will say many times over,Thank you Jolly and Mover, for your service and sacrifice for our country!!

Nice interview. I remember reading the original Pave Hawk design documents back when it was part of SOC and had to communicate with the AC130U we were developing. If I recall it had lots of radios and other Avionics to communicate with nearly everyone.

Hey CW, this is Rex in Williamsburg, VA, I'm the retired AH64 A/D pilot, in 1998, I had the honor of being invited to the Son Tay Raiders reunion in Dallas hosted by Mr and Mrs Perot. My friend, Col Marty Donahue (Apple 3) was the flight lead of the Son Tay Mission and he is an Air Force Cross winner. He was head of Aerospace Recovery at Eglin for Apollo Missions 9-16, He gave me the "Unofficial Patch" of the Son Tay Raiders, it was a hell of exp for myself as a young aviator!!!! God Bless Rex

Hey mover, first of all my heart goes out the F-15c pilot that sadly lost his life over here in the U.K yesterday (15/6/2020) based out of RAF Lakenheath sad times, I live about 40 miles from where the jet went down, I followed the story from when I first heard yesterday morning hoping he would be found safe and well but sadly this isn't the case. R.I.P......... So I wandering if you could do an episode of one of my favourite movies of all time...Iron Eagle 2. Thanks for the amazing content mover I love it .

Speaking of different services working together, I witnessed an interesting interaction in Haiti right after the earthquake in 2010. I was a volunteer working at a makeshift hospital where there were daily flights of Blackhawks and Hueys bringing in patients. On this particular day, they were expecting a CH-53 Navy Super Stallion to come in. On the ground, they had a US Coast Guardsman on comms with the chopper and a soldier from the army (no insignia, maybe special forces?) to give hand signals for the landing. It was dusty, so it was a total brownout when that big beast landed. I did get to go on the chopper to help with patients and it was definitely a cool experience! Impressive, massive aircraft. The 3 services seemed to work well together.

Nice finish to the outstanding interview and @jolly_pilot made some great points that I can relate to as a former Army 60 medevac driver. The focus mission set is key, I was enlisted USN aircrew and while we had a CSAR mission, we had all the other missions required around the aircraft carrier as well. I enjoyed the CSAR/PR mission over chasing subs and working with NSW/EOD while on deployment. Could not agree more on the dust landings, I have had a few at night in Iraq with a high pucker factor (seat cushion survived) thanks to the crew working together.

It’s a shame that the DOD doesn’t care that much about Helo’s I mean HH-3’s and H-53’s helped the air force rescue their pointy jet guys they love so much from the dense jungles of Vietnam, I think DOD should start caring more, if anything they care more about the marine corps, as the Marines are testing the CH-53K king stallion

Ok mover if you go pro your helo you gotta record it all and upload. I was thinking about hitting flight school and a school just outside Turlock ca quoted me 50k for private and commercial I even bought the school books. I didn’t go but I’d like to get back in an r22 and see just how much hovering in MSFX translates to real world.

I was hoping to get some professional opinions on this in terms of a future profession with the military. I'm an aviation guy I enjoy helicopters over fix winged aircraft. I personally want to be a helicopter pilot and work within medical/search and rescue operations. So my question is which is a better choice, if one even exists, that I'll get a lot out of USAF CSAR or US ARMY Medevac "Dustoff"? If any veterans from either branches could give me their opinions I would definitely appreciate it.

If you got a 4y college degree, get sponsored to UPT by an af reserve or air ng helo rescue squadron like this guy did. Vs Army warrant officer: Officer status, better pay, more complex missions and elite community, 100+ hours of fixed wing training (t6) in UPT. Vs active duty AF: part time, relatively flexible schedule, assurance of flying rescue helos (helos spots out of UPT are very hard to get for AD). If you don't have/don't want to get a degree, Army's warrant officer pilot program is the only way. Available in AD/army reserve/NG. Some reserve/NG components won't be doing medevac. And AD is always needs of the service, be prepared to take whatever the army sends you to (transport, attack...). If you have a degree and go army officer, be prepared to be doing a serious bit of desk work on top of flying. Only sure fire way is what this dude in the video did: college + upt sponsorship from a rescue sq.
