Amy of the Our mL Home blog (ourmlhome.wordpress.com) is successfully raising children in English as a non-native speaker (but it should be noted that she acquired English relatively young by attending an English school abroad--her English is native-like!). She shares some wisdom for those of us who are just starting out on our journeys raising bilingual or multilingual children. I bet Stephanie, like me, felt a little bit of envy when they threw the majority language out of their home. Two minority languages are much better at sharing than one minority and one majority!!

It’s baffling to me that there are still doctors who believe multilingualism hurts a child. I’m glad she didn’t listen to them.

I agree! It's damaging not just because we really trust our doctors on these topics, but their advice on these topics result in decisions that aren't very easy to reverse because of the time-sensitive nature of first-language acquisition. Older kids are may be more resistant to the introduction of a new language than babies are so when the parent has the motivation and ability, it's really a shame not to go for it.
