This is a remarkable man. Almost a decade of his life is spent as a guest of the Hanoi Hilton and he comes home to find his wife divorced him. But he demonstrates that true human spirit that a man ain't beat until he lets himself be beat. He never has been defeated.

I had no idea who this man was when I met him and he is truly modest. There's a man who lives not far from him a Latino. They have the same brick and honor... It's from the Hanoi Hilton. Thank you guys so much for your contribution you will always have my respect. You are truly to be honored and never forgotten as the greatest casualty of War .. never forgotten.....

Navy Commander Everett Alvaraez, Jr (Ret) - his father invited to his home in Santa Clara. CA to meet his son after his son's release. This man was in "hell" for almost 9 years ! This man is shy - but is in all sense of the word a true HERO. Imagine, being held in a POW camp for nearly 9 years !!!! What an honor to meet and talk with him and his gracious father.

I can still remember when he got off the plane and while most ofmthe men ahead of him struggled s bit to go down the tarmack mr alvarez looked very fit and upright...a park in Santa Clara was named after him....sadly his wife had remarried...if you watch Homeland on Showtime there are some similarities...

I was aboard the uss valley forge in 1963 with 3rd Marine Division rapid deployment infantry battalion on the gulf of Tonkin. The excuses of Washington to initiate the war was PURE BULLSHIT - We stared that damn war we had over 58,000 of our kids killed mostly poor kids while the rich kids were hiding in college campuses like Donald trump was and others in Canada. Alvarez is a Chicano brother and I respect him but I like most Vietnam vets do not support wars - becausing it is the politicians that start them and when th shooting starts they are the first ones to hide from serving. trump, Reagan, George w. bush are rich boys supported wars but neve had the balls to go serve and fight.
