I think because he'd already proved to himself he could survive in music as a 'failure' it gave him the confidence and drive to reach higher and higher. I think the lady in the latter part of the clip is Connie Hillman, Elton's US promoter and later his tour producer. They worked together for over 40 years.

swollen nose. heavy coke days for the next 15 years, he had so many advantages and still kept them, i was with him all the years and felt for him the whole time, praise and sympathy/empathy.....he's always been the absolute best
