Interview with Heartland Actor Shaun Johnston

We have a chat to Canadian actor Shaun Johnston, who you may know playing Jack Bartlett, or Grandpa Jack, in the Canadian TV show Heartland.
We have a chat about how he got into acting originally, how it feels to play a much older character in Heartland and we also hear about his music and whether there is a music career for him on the horizon.

Grew up with Bonanza, The Big Valley, Laredo, High Chaparral, on and on. More recently, McLeod's Daughters. Just found and watched 14 seasons of Heartland. What a treasure! I am a fan for life. I have no idea how I found this show but once I started watching it, I was hooked and began to binge watch. I really like the characters. It helps that I love horses as well and the nature views on the show. The actors, the scripts , the horses and the country side; what's not to love? BTW, I started taking horseback riding lessons at 62.

The character of Jack Bartlett is one of my favorites of all my cowboy heroes. He is in excellent company with the western heroes of the past. Bret Maverick (James Garner),Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood) and Jess Harper (Robert Fuller). I am so happy that Heartland is on my favorite teevee channels. Heartland is really an excellent show. I rank it in high level right up there with some of the old teevee westerns of Maverick, Laramie, Wagon Train and Rawhide. It is refreshing to watch a show that focuses on family values.

So wonderful to be able to see Shaun just being himself, instead of being in character as Jack on Heartland. Not that we all don't love Jack tremendously (is there anyone out there who doesn't?!), however, I must admit that I I love Shaun himself even more than I love Jack (if that's possible!). Shaun truly is a wonderful man; humble and grateful for all that life has brought to him. It was extremely interesting to hear how a twist of fate (needing ONE more credit in law school!) and signing up for what he thought was going to be a simple drama class changed his entire world and his entire life!! Truly validates that Shaun's entire acting career was truly meant to be.....Shaun Johnston was meant to play Jack Bartlett. Shaun Johnston IS Jack Bartlett and I can't imagine anyone else playing that role....EVER! Shaun has worked hard to perfect his craft as portraying Jack; thinking about and practicing Jack's walk and voice and facial expressions and that definitely shows on camera!! Want to thank you personally Shaun for taking your time to do this interview and for allowing all of us loyal and devoted fans to see a bit of who you truly are. Now we all love you even more!!

Jack reminds me of my dad. Tim reminds me of my ex-husband from back when we were married 45 years ago. I am indebted to Shaun Johnston's dad and grandfather, as well as Jack's portrayal of them, to help fill a deep void in my life. My sister and I are the last members of the immediate Wisconsin farm family that we grew up in. In the early days, after my brothers went to work off their CO's at a veteran's hospital out in Denver, CO, I was in line to be the "son" to fill my brother's shoes with the farmwork along with painting barns and houses and helping to get that huge woodpile in the Fall. My sister, who reminds me of "Lou", still stayed in the house with my mom baking pies and cakes, etc. while I helped with the farm chores, running the tractor, and running machinery out in the fields. I was glad to find someone I could relate to in your Heartland sister, June, who was eager to take her brother's place so he could go to the rodeo down in Nashville in the states. All these years later, I'm still proud of all those years that I worked outside alongside my dad. God blessed me with good horses and an amazing English Shepherd (barnyard collie) type of dog for companionship. Now I am 69 years young. I'm a mom, and I'm a grandma. I miss my dad and my ex-husband, who, like Peter in Heartland, stayed involved in our "kids" lives. The "kids" are in their later 30's and early 40's now. My kids help me to live at their home/s so I don't end up in one of those prisons called a nursing home! I've gone back from the beginning and watched Heartland over again to feel the healing balm it provides for my soul. Thank You!

I just finished watching Heartland on Netflix! I love this show and the diversity! Jack is the man!!! Love this character! He has such a solid foundation and good heart. I cried when I thought he had died! They really got me with that one! Ty’s close call was next, and then Tim. I am a lover of horses and this was what drew me in! You maybe right I stumbled on this by accident but I noticed each episode really resonated me it's like its forcing lessons on me with how deep they touch all of the characters stories and aspects of their own characters too, certainly make me think about my own life and I can relate to the stories a lot. IT's so subtle and varied and beautiful and heart breaking (watching the story with Lou and Peter breaking news to their family right now and that is done so well, so realistically and the flash backs and Lou's realisation of being wrong about what she believed was right and her back and forth mood swings in dealing with it. I didnt like Lou that much at the beginning I thought she was too contemporary and materialistic but this storyline really changed my mind on her, it's so needed. My first drama series on Netflix was Jane the Virgin and the extreme scenes put me off but this one for a Netflix series is just AMAZING and the detailed interviews with these actors explains it It's also awesome and lovely that they give Native actors plenty of screen time and legitimate stories interwoven gently with the main characters as well Really really great show!

Jack is my favorite character on Heartland. Love all of the characters...some have had to grow on me, but Jack is the one who holds everyone together. I was scared for a one in either season 12 or 13 during that fishing trip that they was getting rid of Jack. I was like oh no you can't do that I'll stop watching the show if Jack's not there.

Nice interview! Thank you! I always wondered how Shaun actually is, and how he ages so well in the show. The one thing about Heartland that always bothers me about Jack is that nobody seems to care that much about how he has changed so many children's lives and yet nobody seems to consider his work as particularly important. Lou's work always comes to the forefront in terms of attention, but Jack's role is the most vital . Lisa wanted him to leave Heartland to travel to France, but how could he , with an entire ranch and all his family and homeless young people so absolutely dependent on him? I think his role is like that of so many men in our time--absolutely vital but greatly undervalued. He's too masculine and modest to point it out, though!

As soon as its finished we just start watching it again :) I would love to live Amy's Heartland life but more than anything i'd love to play my guitar with Shaun he's brilliant & I just love him. Watched all 13 seasons on Netflix 3 times cannot wait for season 14 to hit Netflix. I tell everyone about the series not really happy that Ty moves on from Heartland I really fell in love with that story line. I do wish Ty well . Thank you everyone who created these great stories.
