Been a huge fan of the David Parland era of Necrophobic ever since their first album. After that I kinda lost the connection to their music. But listening to those guys and their passion really made me curious. Gonna give the later albums a spin again! Great interview, thanks for that!

It's so nuanced, this whole genre thing. I would agree with Sebastian that they are probably a continuation of the first wave black metal, which in my mind is conflated with speed metal, say early destruction, slayer, exciter etc. it's all a bit of a mishmash

I like how they don’t try to appear tough and dark. Kinda boring metal nerds who still maintain high standard of their craft.

Probably part of why they don't call themselves Black metal. Those dudes are, as he said, a "religion", and I think that idea is the identifying aspect of the BM genre. I personally have mixed feelings about this, as I am certainly a part of that "cult" although I recognize how absurd it is. Also part of why I laugh at those who claim they are and clearly aren't, its a badge of dishonor wish more people understood this.
