Well done. I like how you allowed him to speak and answer the questions. Too many interviewers don’t seem to get it. I also appreciate how you respectfully pushed back on GPS implementation. +LibbyD How did you arrive at the decision to buy the V1G2 over other units on the market, such as the R7 and Redline 360? I’ve owned a Max 360 for 3 years now, and I’ve really liked it, although I’ve wished for better Ka range. What I do like about the Max 360 is: - Arrows - Good BSM filtering - auto GPS lockouts But, I’ve given it to my wife, and I’m looking for something for my truck. I guess the other big option in that price range is the R7.

Great interview!! I moved from a Bell radar detector in 1999 to a Valentine 1. Been using a V1 ever since. It has never let me down. After watching the unboxing of the V1 G2 and listening to this interview I will be sending one of my three V1s back for the $110 discount. The V1 G2 will be installed in my Corvette GS. It needs the best protection of all three cars. Again great interview and unboxing vids!!

Such a great interview. When you talk to someone who really knows his stuff, it's just magic. Having worked for Valentine in the early days of the company, his speech patterns brought back lots of great memories talking with him, Patrick Bedard from Car and Driver (we were working on the g-analyst at the time) and some of the engineers. He used to come to the Indianapolis and Cincinnati BMW club meets and do talks like this over dinner. He is one of the all-time greats in the automotive related business.

Back a few years I got my first car with Side protection and it sent a false signal to the V1. I called tech service to ask for help and got to talk to Mike Valentine. He walked me through the fix and it worked perfect after that. Have used a V1 in all my vehicles since then. Class act guy

This is why I like V1. I have noticed that the company is different. No smoke and Mirrors. No features that they feel is not beneficial. Very honest about there product they produce. Not adding features just because another company does. Jbv1 app is excellent but I feel I will not use the lockout feature especially once I upgrade from V1G1 to V1G2. I agree one hundred percent with Mike! I’m old school myself and am a radar detector dude. I like to know where the chatter is as well, and don’t need or want the gps feature as I never used or felt the need for it in the past. I look forward to purchasing the gen 2 and still keep my gen 1 as a backup. Knew about Mike from his Escort days and he definitely knows his stuff about radar detection. This is so cool, I just did my senior project and we build a preselector which applies filtering and amplification to each band. We used low noise amplifiers because they introduce such a small amount noise and can amplify the signal by a high amount. The ones we used had a 0.6 dB insertion loss (degrades the signal to noise level) and 23 dB of gain. This was for RF signals that were lower than this. We used SAW filters to select the bands we wanted and then amplified the signal after filtering to make up for the loss

I've been using V1 exclusively through decades of driving and more vehicles than I can recall. I'm on my second device. I'm so used to it, I'd feel naked without it. I want the new model.... I need to forget this fantastic interview or my credit card will alert my wife to the bogie on the dash.

I bought my first V1 in 2001. A couple of years after I bought it I started getting false laser alerts from the rear. I shipped it to Valentine along with my credit card info. I got it back a week or so later. They shipped it back 2 day and my card was never charged. They had me as a customer for life. The only reason I no longer have that V1 was because it was stolen while I was in Houston a couple of years ago. My wife got me another one and of course it’s been great. The V1 has saved me hundreds if not thousands of times over the last 19 years. Best 400 bucks I’ve spent ( well technically 800 since the first one was stolen). I would love a gen 2 but I don’t *need* it.

Owner since 1996 here too! Had one stolen, bought two and mounted thr 2nd on a bike that got rained on a few times but never missed a beat. I have TMF1 older version now but with ESP and love datalogging on the JBV1 Android app. Plus the sweeps on Ka make it hyper quick! Looks like Ebay is getting twice what V1 is offering so that is an avenue to get a new one. The testing on rdforums.org say it is one of the best windshield mount on the market.

Norm T Until my first one was stolen I left mine on the windshield even in very hot summer temperatures. They build a quality product that’s for sure! My wife has been talking about wanting a detector. Maybe I can give her mine? Then I will definitely need a new one! I drive about 50k a year with my job so I get plenty of use with mine!

So just to elaborate a bit with a simpler analogy so people will understand better as to why you will still get some chattiness from BSMs or from door openers, etc. The new detector is super fast at scanning the frequencies and a direct benefit of this is that it can “check and balance” what it detects against what it knows are threats. The base logic or rule set is that ANY detected frequency can be a threat, but with further judgement on that frequency, what the base logic said is a threat can possibly now be trusted as a non-threat and the user not be alerted. Think of it like meeting another person in life. Your initial scan and detection of the person (frequency) tells you that person is there and further queues about that person (all those additional scans due to the detector’s new speed) will then tell more about them and you can either trust they are friend (a legit BSM or door sensor) or foe (a cop shooting radar). When it’s just one person or two or a few, it’s easier to gauge, but if you introduce a huge roomful of new sources of the same frequency, you now have a lot more sources to try and analyze. The thing to remember is that, it’s not a speed limitation... it’s a source count limitation. It’s a comparison trait issue. It’s like finding a single threat in a huge room of people. You analyze everyone (all these frequency sources) and they all pass, right up until something new catches your eye about one of them and then you single that out and you have your warning presented to the user. The balance Mike was talking about is at what point do you say everything is a threat or nothing is a threat and don’t warn at all. That’s that “end user happiness” level you have to meet. And this is why on congested highways or in busy cities with lots and lots of sources, you will (even with the new detector) have some punch-throughs that you’ll get warnings about and you have to, because ultimately Mike’s ideology is, give me the best amount of information you can and let me decide. What he doesn’t want to happen is for the detector not to warm you and then you get pulled over and then you’re not happy about that either. Think of the V1 as a secret service guy who’s got to scan the room or the parade or whatever threat blanket is out there looking for threats. He doesn’t want to sound the alarm too early but he also doesn’t want to be too lax and not warn you of a possible threat. In small source environments, it’s easy because the supposed target source is small and easier to be sure about (maybe, a lot still depends on frequency and pattern, etc. you could still get a punch-through with even a single source depending on certain variables, but generally it shouldn’t happen). In larger environments with a lot of sources it’ll be more difficult to weed out the junk from the legit, so expect a little bit of noise. Other companies approach things differently and a lot of them will simply block out some BSMs or other benign sources based solely on frequency range. That’s like saying a person that under 5’4” can’t be a criminal in a room full of people. Great, until that’s wrong... and we all know this. That one 5’ person that’s now a threat in your room full of benign BSM sources was a cop with an out of tune gun. You see what I’m getting at? By not approaching detection in such a rudimentary way with blanket statements like this and evaluating every source the same way, you basically have a recipe for what I like to call a very skeptical detector. It treats all radar sources the same way and as it analyzes them more and more as they’re broadcasting, it can change its opinion on them and then inform the user as to its final judgement. I hope this makes a bit better sense to everyone. Oh and one last thing... Thea or let’s say any kind of machine learning algorithms applied to something like this. Everything electronic is based on rules and set guidelines and patterns. Currently there is no machine variant to a gut instinct or human intuition or a human’s ability to make a judgement call. Humans amass for more life learned experience than any machine learning platform can currently attain as even we can make mistakes judging a situation or a person or in the example above, a radar source. If we can make that mistake, so will the much more limited machine. Ultimately, you will see that you can get close to a silent radar unless it’s a real threat, but it’ll never be 100% silent to 100% benign sources. It just will never happen because if you were to make it do that, you will eventually get hit with a ticket from the one source it thought it wasn’t a threat. If a human can make a judgement mistake, a machine based on machine learning will too. It’s just the nature of the beast. The best approach is really, find the source and then test that source over and over again until it falls in one camp or another and that’s what this new V1 does.... that’s why it scans so quickly and so many times and never stops. The source of the radar threat must convince it that it’s not a threat and even then, it might still present it to a human user for them to make their final decision.

Mike is a class act, and personable guy. My argument is, he is somewhat correct, but he is fighting a old school mindset. GPS is the future, and only improving lockouts, false alerts with technology. This reminds of Apple saying in 2012, that customers wants smaller compact phone lol. My point is a very high percentage of Customers want GPS and lockouts period. Mike is wrong on this one. I guarantee they add it in the future. That or people will buy the competitors.

I used V1 detectors since 1992, trading up to newer and newer models, the last one in 2014. Last year I bought a Uniden R7. The display gives so much more information, its menu driven programming is so much easier to perform, the existence of voice alerts, the ability to easily update firmware, the GPS and ability to lockout known speed signs and door openers, etc are such improvements over the V1. I do not want to use a V1/smartphone combo as I do not want to have to pay attention to a phone while driving. In fact, yesterday I bought a second R7 for my second car, and it was $25 cheaper than the V1Gen2.

Did you listen to the whole video? Mike explained why the GPS has pros and cons depending on the users needs. IMHO, I will NEVER buy an R7 until they move that silly side mounted mute button. I have an R3 and it's just fine. I will be getting a V1gen2 however. And don't forget the R7 GPS patent infringement lockout situation.

Louis Soria Vortex said no in his unboxing of the V1 G2. You have to trade the V1 in for $110 credit toward the $499 price. No hardware upgrade available on the V1.

Mike was always helpful on the Porsche Rennteam forums back in the day and I’ll always have a love for my V1s but I upgraded to the R3 and then when the R7 came out upgraded to that and it’s the best radar detector I’ve ever used.

I have a Escort Passport 8500 X50 that I picked up off Craigslist 6yrs ago for a steal at 75$ and I absolutely love it. Its paid for itself more times than I can count over the years on my dauntless 100mile round trip journey I take to and from work daily. Im in Northern Michigan where roads are wide open, smooth and where driving 50 +miles w/o seeing another car is a normal occurrence. US31 North is a perfect testing grounds for radar detector tech. I just picked up a Valentine V1 1st gen off E-Bay for 225$ shipped w/ the "Savvy" unit to end the hassel of switching radar det between my vehicles. Ive had my V1 for only days and it's looking like the KA pick-ups have a noticeable amount of increased range VS. my X50 and the arrows are what sold me on the unit and I wasn't wrong in that assumption. Im going down a rabbit hole of research and I can't wait to see how the 2 units stack up against eachother long term. I live for this nerd shit😎😄🤓, thanks Vortex and Mike!!

At 28:30 extra sweeps work on the older V1. Push extra sweeps via JBV1 and you'll notice the difference on Ka-band.

Vortex, I'm on the fence between the two R7-V2.. I'm still running R3, in NY Orange county. Down to NYC & back up home. It's still flawless detection, even from the rear, I guess bouncing off the front glass. So What's your take, should I take the leap on Big brother R7? It seems like your leaning towards the V2.. I’m glad that I’ve waited for the new V-1 Gen2. Being able to update software through uploads through the app changes the game for V-1. I’ll be making my purchase soon. 👍🏼 ....but to make things clear. My V-1 Gen1 in my opinion is still relevant in conjunction with 3rd party apps like V1driver which I use. 👍🏼

Nope, we didn’t go over the questions beforehand and he didn’t censor anything. The only edits a cutting out a few pauses and overlaying the photos on screen. Otherwise that was exactly the interview. :)
