was on active duty during this time. 29 Dec 1981 if i remember correctly.Impala jets probably saved us as they strafed our target and bombed the shit out the buggers. We lost a chopper and a casualty during the engagement. 49 Bats vs a resupply column. lots of drama but we did ok in some regards. This was near a place called Cuvelai (spelling). Capt Walker got an HC that day and another chopper pilot as well. oh well. south africa has become totally lawless and an inept government to boot. RIP Lest we forget.

Yikes ! I remember watching this on TV when I was 8 years old - within a week of my dad taking me to Ysterplaat airshow in 1984 where an all-grey F-1CZ deafened me with afterburners on the deck, and a few Mach 1 passes at the same altitude. When I was 10 I learned about the Armscor-developed helmet-mounted 60-degree off-axis light-diode array system, which allows a pilot to sight track a target and slave a Darter or Kukri AAM head - the HUD footage indicates that this system was in-use on the F-1CZ to make the kill. Awesome to see it again, thank you for posting !

I was 5 years old in 1984 and was also at that Ysterplaat airshow. A distant but still super memory. I've been to many airshows since at Ysterplaat and I got no idea how fast they fly, but they definitely break the sound barrier. They normally fly in from Langebaan, do their thing and fly back to land at Langebaan. Cape Town is begging for another Ysterplaat airshow, if anyone is listening? 👍🇿🇦

Unique videofootage! Thank you for posting! One small remark (to AJ Venter): Soviet, not Russian.

From an almost unbeatable military to destruction by a totally corrupt government (ANC); without a shot being fired.

the story goes beyond that when President Botha and the Israeli prime minister were even considering the use of nuclear weapons on cuban troops and MPLA, we now know that all that was on the table. To my surprise I also lived in Pietermaritzburg area and met with a girl who her mother told her that her dad was an Israeli man and abandom them after she was born.

That's just kak. South Africa would never have deployed a nuke in Angola. Maybe if the Rooi Gevaar was rolling past Upington, but even then probably not.

What a shame to see what is left of our once mighty SAAF...now only I at most 2 fighters are airworthy.....with no ammunition to arm them. Thank you ANC..
