I've heard Maynard say that a few times and I get what he's saying, but I think he needs to realize that his art really is that important to a lot of people for whatever reason. The music is what it is because of the members and the choices they have made artistically. It means a lot to me and because of that, the members of the band are important to me.
@Strugen.4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he and the band would realize that. They seem like humble people who don't crave the spotlight. Maynard obviously is a more public figure seeing he is in 3 bands and a front man, but he would have a process of how things work for him and playing himself down would help keep his ego in check. And he has probably had his fair share of die hard fans freaking out in front of him which from what I can see from the type of person he is would be very uncomfortable

What can I say, the Album is awesome! Maynard is awesome! Interesting about his placement on stage being cuz of sound. It makes perfect sense as a former audio engineer who started being a roadie (yes a roadie in the early eighties) an doing follow spot, sound is so important I've never left a Tool concert an I've left several others cuz I'm not spending $150 on a ticket an the sound sucks there is nothing worse I'd rather leave it ruins my whole experience so Thank you Tool for thinking about probably (at least to me) the most important part of the show, the sound. 7empest my fav today tomorrow it will be a differant song but today its 7empest.

Maynard has changed so much in the last 10 years. He used to be so quiet and awkward and gave as little information and his responses in interviews that he had to. As everyone could see what this interview and then with the Joe Rogan interview, Maynard seems to have came out of his social shell and talks more in depth about his process, his other endeavors outside the band and he laughs and tells jokes more. I am so happy for him. You can also tell in the lyrics for the new album that he has let go of something that was holding him down and has moved on.

Always interesting how MJK doesn't actually enjoy talking about Tool's music and engages much better with discussions on literally anything else! Questions that would have been interesting to me: What does the ordering of the tracks mean to you, how does that get decided? What was it about the tone of 7empest that made you want to unload with heavy lyrics? What singing techniques have you developed over the years that were particularly important for you to incorporate? What goes through your mind during the several minutes per song that you're not singing? What are your impressions for writing for longer songs, versus shorter, punchier songs; do you have a preference? Do you enjoy the heavier metal songs, or the sweeping soundscape songs? - Etc, etc etc... Or you can chat about LA culture and martial arts.

Because you are people's Hero, I know you're mine, Maynard. However I respect you and wouldn't beg you for your autograph lol I'm more interested your mindset and your thoughts, you as a person. You're an inspiration even if you don't think so. Your drive is unworldly, the things you have overcame and accomplished is incredible to me. Also before seeing this my take on this album was about personal growth and making peace with this from the past. I think those so called fans who don't really care for it honestly just don't get it. They're stuck as individuals and refuse to let go. They like the view from your younger years when you came off as more angry and hard so to speak. I understand you're just telling your story. They just don't get it. However, I have seen the growth from every song you all have created and you guys are like fine wine You get better with age!!! Those silly so called fans haven't figured that out and they will maybe or they won't and they will always stay stuck. Change is neccessary for growth and some people refuse or fight change instead of embrace and learn. Thus as you said so many missed opportunities. I am an empath as well, can be very rough at times but mostly rewarding. Here I am writing this as some country girl from Ky, hoping you will actually look through the comments and see this. Just know that as a true fan. You are my hero and I enjoy your music and it has helped me through so many things in life. Especially losing my mother as well. You touch more people's lives more than you know. And I saw an interview where you said you were hoping you were still important or relevant after such a long break. He declares he is the "interior decorator" of a piece that is already finished. I don't think that's the best way to compose Music as a group.. he should feel inspired and eager to sing those lines.. that inspiration is perceived in Puscifer's "Money shot" for example. I love Tool. That being said, hats off to anyone who has a good interview with Maynard. He is so aloof, such a contrarian, and has such a huge ego, it's sorta disappointing. I'd like to meet any of the other members before I'd want to meet Maynard. They all seem much more personable and open to a conversation. Trying to pull that out of this guy just doesn't really happen. I guess all the fans who put him on a pedestal deserve some of the credit here, as well.

This isn't true, he's just not open to people and was very socially awkward for a very long time. He just likes to mess with people when he doesn't really want too or know the answers to some people's questions. He's just private. But he has grown leaps and bounds as a person. If you can't see that you've missed it. But you're entitled to your own opinion. He is a humble person and trys to keep his ego in check, like all of them he just has a different way of showing it, that's all and I believe he's very misunderstood sometimes.

If you're a fan, don't tell Maynard that. Ask him about his wine and leave lol

Which is so dumb though. Like why even bother being an artist if you don't want people to appreciate your art? I can't phatom what it would be like to have people worship you. I'm sure it can be annoying af but damn be a little understanding.

I thought he changed his stage position from front to back because at that time Dime Bag got shot, and people getting onto stage. He didn’t want to be a target out front. To me it explained the riot gear he wears. I’m sure it’s all bullet proof gear. I remember seeing the video of a fan getting to him on stage and he dropped him and put him in a hold till the staff pro got the fan off stage.

Dime was killed at the end of 2004, Maynard’s been standing at the back of the stage since roughly 2000/2001.

Maynard wore the riot gear because of the bananas.. And yes it's true, I was at the show in which he discussed it lol

He has always believed in the mythical dude in the sky. He's just been angry for a while because of what happened to his mother. He also has issues with religion, but not with faith.

Great interview. I wish it was longer. After I lost my best friend jason to suicide when I was 27, for years I would have a dream that we were both flying. I would say, jason, I thought u were dead’ and jason would tell me that he was still alive. I wonder if the flying dream a universal phenomena?

I have had dreams that I was flying . I have also had dreams that I think are dead relatives visiting me, but I have never had a dream that my visitors were flying with me. Cool dream though. I believe it was a visit.

Flying dreams are your deep self giving you a reality check. The point isn't the flying, the point is waking up and going 'aw dammit'. The higher you fly the more disconnected from reality you are. Before i learned this i used to wonder why i'd sometimes have a flying dream where i could just bob along five or ten feet from the ground. Similar dreams involved being able to jump and get loads of air, or do the splits. It's a reality check, that's all.

@ That's where we live after we die, in the memories of others, which lets reputation destruction add a new terror to the grave.

@ I don't know what a hive mind is. The purpose of dreams is to break invalid associations made between things during the day. Remembering your dreams at all is a failure of that function. Genetics is just the soma, the expression of the chemical code. Some weirdos think consciousness erupts from physical matter, others think all matter erupts from consciousness. But dreams are to your mind what farts are to your gut. I know they can be portentous or helpful, but that's not what they're for.

Thanks. Does anyone live in Los Angeles. We are really looking for another guitar player and maybe a singer. No one will ever be anywhere as good as Maynard. But we can all try. Please email me Borderline delusion band Danny We did a track with durga mc broom who sang with pink Floyd.

This album is a monster! A friggin bulldozer!! The success of it, still growing at an accelerated rate, speaks for itself. Yes, there a small number of haters. Always will be. You all need to stick to Sober, 46&2 and whatever slayer type band is trending. You should steer clear of the live shows and stop giving the real fans a bad name.

luap ekcol I agree. I was referring to all the wannabe slayer type bands that ride slayers nutz. They generate “Tool fans” but they don’t listen to the lyrics and just want constant overbearing bass riff. Tool has evolved and are high masters of their craft. That said, FUCKIN SLAYER!
