When I first heard of his death, I was greatly saddened, especially when I learned of his suffering from Alzheimer's. I saw photos of him wandering the streets, wide-eyed and confused, it was awful. But . . . It's over now. He suffers no more, and for that I am grateful. He is the only famous person I have ever wanted to meet in person.

He had the same sad ending as Charles Bronson. Near the end Bronson couldn't remember being an actor let alone the highest paid one at one time. Sad. He and Falk are two of my favorite actors.

One key factor in Columbo's success was how he reacted to insults and second-guessing. Many people who have inquiring-type minds (such as the prime viewers) can relate to people thinking they're slow or stupid. Many of the villains on Columbo were confident and arrogant, figuring they were so much smarter than the down-to-Earth, slow and meticulous Columbo. Even though we all knew the outcome every episode, us viewers who've been similarly insulted feel vindicated when Columbo ultimately proves to the killer that he/she isn't as smart as they think - and Columbo is one hell of a lot smarter than they think.

I m 20 and i loved to watch with my parents when i was a kid. I m starting a rerun of all episodes this year! Columbo is smart and charming and i wouldnt like a new actor for a spinoff , Peter Falk is the legend himself! Also when i watch Episodes that were made in the 60s 70s 80s and 90s it feels like a different world to me!

My favorite thing about this show was how he was able to obfuscate himself and make himself seem like a bumbling detective or a drunk, but he was most intelligent guy in the room. When most episodes started the suspects and witnesses would be like ' who is person' and he'd be searching clues but the people there saw as a loon.

My favorite things about the show are how Columbo irritates the bad guys and then how he gets them in the end. The culprits think they are so smart, and they think they committed the perfect crime. Then they look so silly when they get caught red handed or when their “well - thought - out” plan slowly crumbles apart. How very entertaining. 😄

This is one of those roles you could never recast. No one in the world could portray Columbo. If an actor tries to do his cadences and mannerisms it's just a cheap imitation or if they try to play it differently it's not Columbo. It really can't be done. It was just a role made for Falk and Falk is the only person anybody could ever believe

Yeah, networks can be greedy. Now a days a network would KILL to have something like Columbo on their channel earning huge ratings and having such a wide fanbase going overseas. Nothing in this current era can even touch Columbo in universal appeal in every country in the world, NCIS is the exception but other than that what modern day crime show or fictional detective has the acclaim and success of Columbo? Not even the new incarnations of Sherlock Holmes

I remember seeing Link's interview and him mentioning that. And I so agree. Columbo is so unique. He's an everyman, a regular joe, sloppy, forgetful, humble, polite but aside from that he's a bull dog, a mind as sharp as a tack and a keen eye for detail and impeccable instincts. A mix of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson makes Lt. Columbo a unique and refreshing character. There's no character like him today on tv. What's even more amazing is his appeal around the world. One would think he'd only be popular here but he and Peter Falk are legends in Japan, one famous artist would leave dinner parties to go watch Columbo. And not just Japan, the show airs all over in Germany, China, Russia, Hungary, France, Italy etc. it's amazing

It's a shame. There was a time when you mostly caught big audiences with just intelligent writing, stellar acting, superb production and direction and great characters. Well, obviously to me Columbo plays the dumb guy role to fool the criminals to give them a false sense of security but he really is a regular guy, humble and sloppy and forgetful and of course Mrs. Columbo is real lol but for certain he plays the fool on purpose because he's smarter than any other tv\film detectives, I think Columbo's a genius with psychology and knows how to read people so well that he could've been a great shrink in another life. Another thing that makes him so appealing is that he may not be an official "genius" like in a Einstein type of way but what makes him the best cop is that he works so hard at his job, in fact he obsesses over his job, studies every detail of the crime and\or the killer's trade. Like the wine merchant in Any Old Port in the storm that I just saw. It's refreshing that Columbo isn't the stereotypical "born genius" but someone who is so brilliant because of the work he puts in and the amount of time he spends studying videos, crime scenes etc.

For me the biggest proof was the phone call he made in Rest In Peace, Mrs. Columbo. That was pretty obvious, Columbo isn't nuts so he wouldn't speak on the phone to an imaginary wife with no one else around and second, he talks about her with other cops a lot too. Thank you! I'm a tv addict so even when I've only seen a handful of episodes of something I really get the depth and characters of it rather quickly and Columbo is so well defined it's easy to read his character. That is marvelous, Columbo has made it into psychology books, you can't get bigger than that lol, Nothing particularly bothered me in that episode but I will certainly let you know whenever I do since you're clearly an expert :)

Watched a million tv shows. Columbo is the best you can get. The stories have depth and the character is quirky, loveable and uses his eccentricities to disable his suspects who discount him as a weirdo and give clues away, this is pure genius.

Oh....wasn't he young in the TV made movie....so good looking & he didn't mind playing the role for 50 years....whoa. He certainly had a huge fan following more I think than any other TV detective there was & in the 70s we had quite a lot of them, all good mind you but there was something about Peter's interpretation of the slow, fidgety character & loveable too. Don't forget all the great guest-stars too, all wonderful episodes. Can never get enough of Columbo.
