Sergey: This is my grandfather. Grandfather: Are you leaving now? S: Yes, we are already late. GF: Thеse are burgers with lavash and this is cold kvas. Take it with you. Yes, my boy. Are you going by this car? S: No, first we will go by this car and then by bus. GF: I told the driver of the bus #64 to drive faster as I feel that Seryoja might be caught by the Police on the way. S: I have driven since I was a child. But I really learned to drive on my grandfather’s car. At that time he had an old Niva which he used to call a tank. Irina Hovsepyan-Mother: He dreamed of a car, a motor, i.e. everything related to motion, speed. S: Speed fills my…saying… I guess, the demands of my second life. M: When he was riding a bicycle, still in Yerevan in his childhood, it should be… he was as if flying… Arman Tsaturyan- Komitas music chamber hall director and Aram Khachatryan concert season organizer: Yesterday we arrived to Nagorno Kharabakh Republic. We have concerts today and tomorrow. All the tickets are sold out and the hall is overcrowded. We should acknowledge the world about the people of Nagorno Kharabakh, their opinion, desires, feelings and tastes through art. Narine Aghabalyan-Minister of Culture and Youth affairs of Rep. of Nagorno Kharabakh: Tomorrow it is the opening of the first International classical music festival in Artsakh and the honour of opening of the festival will be given to Sergey Khachatryan and I am very happy about that. S: My soul feels at home here somehow and that’s why I feel wonderful here. Mother: My husband said that it would be too much to have the 4th pianist in the family. Just only for that reason we decided that he should play a violin. Petros Haykazyan-First violin teacher: When Sergey was 6 or 7 years old…he wasn’t yet 7 at that time, they came to me and asked me to teach him. And during the first meeting I felt that he was a very purposeful boy. He was listening to me and doing whatever I told him and every time we met, he made me happier. Mother: Peter Asaturovich was Sergey’s teacher for one and a half year. S: In 1992 my father left for Germany and decided to stay there and in 1993 the rest of the family joined him. Mother: Being in Germany we realized that he must seriously practice playing a violin. Teacher: And they sent me the video of his first concert and wanted to know my opinion. Frankly I didn’t like the way he was taught. The playing didn’t correspond to his talent. S: Rissin made me a real violinist since 1996. And so we had some concerts and little by little…but I can’t tell you an exact moment when I decided… I haven’t decided up to now… I am sure that I was born for playing a violin. It is my life and I love my work very much. S: I didn’t like to study too. I think that a normal kid doesn’t like studying. You don’t like studying…and I didn’t like studying and I always found a reason not to study. Mother: He wasn’t like… No, I don’t want to study and that’s it. I mean, he was always trying to avoid studying or to delay it. We prepared for the concert together very long, that is, for several times, listening to the whole program, giving advice, then recording the concert and after the concert we sat together and analyzed where he failed or where he succeeded or where we needed to practice more. S: In the beginning the role of parents is very important, of course. I mean, they take the kid to the classes. It happened many times when the lesson was a failure and Dad got angry with me for not studying. In the end it comes a period when studying isn’t just studying but it also seems very interesting. Mother: Of course no one expected such a result but we are very happy that it turned out to be like this. The male voice: Sergey Khachatryan was born in Yerevan in 1985 in the family of musicians. He started playing a violin at the age of 6 in the class of Professor Petros Haykazyan. Later he continued his studies in Würzburg in the class of Professor Grigori Zhislin, then he finished the class of Josef Rissin in Karlsruhe Musical High school. He gave his first orchestral concert at the age of nine in Kurhaus, Wiesbaden. His first stage success was in 2000: 2nd prize at the International Fritz Kreisler Competition. Then in 2000: the 1st prize at the International Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists and the 2nd prize at the Pablo Sarasate International Violin Competition. In 2000 at the age of 15 Sergey Khachatryan was the youngest person who ever won the 1st prize at the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition. In 2005 he was awarded the 1st prize at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels. He won the 1708 "Huggins" Stradivarius violin on loan to him. From then on, foreign trips and prizes followed at regular intervals, with many concerts, all over Europe - Germany, Switzerland, Finland,Portugal, Spain, Italy, France - as well as in the USA, South America, Russia. Sergey has performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Orchestre National de France, London Philharmonic, etc. Sergey Khachatryan has concerts in Armenia performing with Armenian musicians very often. Currently he lives in Frankfurt, Germany. Hasmik Poghosyan-Minister of Culture of Armenia: To settle all Armenians from diaspora in Armenia is not a problem for us. It is a big happiness and pride that Armenians succeed in different cultures, in difficult conditions, in competition alongside with other cultures. They prosper and we feel proud hearing their names as the representatives of Armenians. Arman Tsaturyan- Komitas music chamber hall director and Aram Khachatryan concert season organizer: We know very well, that Sergey Khachatryan is living and performing abroad, but he remains Armenian. Hasmik Poghosyan: We can’t limit the artists’ career by Armenian borders. It will destroy both the artist and the culture. Culture has no limits. S: When I play Komitas, I feel that the music is very close to my heart. The reason I play virtuously is that I am Armenian. It is not good or bad, the thing is that the emotional world that I have is totally Armenian. With friends in the bus: when girls went out, I was the driver, I couldn’t get out, I was holding the wheel of the car…Lilo and Luso are pushing the car so well… Mother: He found his friends here and today and in future he is performing the concerts with his friends. Arman Tsaturyan: The musicians of our quartet are Sergey’s close friends. The quartet musicians on the bench: Tell some funny story…Let’s tell that story. ok… Quickly…start…Which one?...Tatev story…no…which one of Tatev?...Let’s tell Jermuk story. Once…in 2009…we were going to Jermuk. You aren’t telling well…We got one car…21.06…which broke down on the way near Jermuk… Don’t forget to mention that it was showering of hail… I want to mention that it was showering of hail…It was showering of hail…and the most amazing thing was that they repaired the car by natural cherry juice…they poured natural cherry juice into the gasoline pump…and the car worked...Actually they perform miracles not only on stages. Hasmik Poghosyan: I first had an opportunity to enjoy his art was in Germany. At that time I was not minister yet. Later when I was a minister, I was attentively following his tour programs in Armenia. I also attended one of his concerts with Berlin orchestra in Germany. It was not in Armenia but on the international and prestigious stage. At that moment I finally and completely realized what place Sergey Khachatryan occupies in the international modern culture. Atom Egoyan-film director: It was wonderful. I’d like to say only one thing. It is unbelievable. He is an unbelievable artist. It is the first time I have listened to his performance and it is magnificent. Thank you. Sergey: Bye bye. So everything is over already. And we -me and my violin…-that’s why I say we-are leaving to Frankfurt.
